Wow wow wow: amazing interactive map showing lava flows from 2022 (day-by-day!), 2021, as well as older ones. Hazard maps, hiking trails, position of webcams, weather and much more! @Landmaelingar #Reykjanes #eruption

Which way to the beach? The lava flows from #Fagradalsfjall eruption have only a few kms to go. 'Laze' plumes caused by lava boiling the seawater have a different composition (our recent #PlumeTeam paper ) and pose a different hazard being very rich in HCl

Instead of closing #geldingadalir area, a huge team has been working on making it 'safe' for visitors by making paths, putting up a mobile connection, making site specific weather forecasts and having rescue teams wearing gas sensors onsite, ready to help in case of emergency.

- Reykjanes eruption continues at a lower intensity from confined craters - Magma source interpreted to be from Svartsengi where it's been accumulating since 2020 - Lava area estimated 3.7 km2 and hasn't grown much since the first night of the eruption 🧵

My PhD student Laura is in Iceland with @Vedurstofan gas monitoring team. All relatively quiet at the moment

Back in Iceland to assist with gas monitoring during the ongoing unrest. Here collecting filter pack samples from a borehole exit pipe. SO2 ppm was very low (possibly below detection) but we’re interested in the potential to capture a signature of magmatic degassing at depth…

Changes in activity at Fagradalsfjall eruption this morning: the fountaining has stopped and the very first crater is now active again, with lava flowing out of it

@ominologist Because it is more wise to first talk to people who have expertise in areas in which you do not before doing tests which are nearly always destructive to some degree, and/or expensive, funded by tax payer money. Twitter is a great platform for connecting with experts

12 hours in a life of an eruption. I could watch this all day, not the least because of the ever-changing weather that makes the landscape look like paintings. And the midnight sun <3 #Fagradalsfjall

Sally then took over and took samples of the airborne plume about a kilometre downwind of the vent. The idea is to see how the composition of the plume changes with distance. @Svarmi did an amazing job finding the best weather window and flying it safe and sound @MikeBurton_Volc

We had a successful day of sampling both smoke and lava emissions with a @Svarmi drone. Especially given strong and gusty winds that shook the cars! We plan to make more measurements in the coming days @WainmanLaura
