The bould
@EIRSAT1
, Ireland's first satellite, is launching Friday - in 2022 I was asked by
@dj_mckeown
& co. to draw a stamp-making design for outreach events, and I based it on the original Irish stamps, which celebrated their 100th anniversary last year. Beir bua! 🛰️
Two years ago from we started with a blank piece of paper. The last 2 days we have been busy assembling EIRSAT-1 to be ready for the fit check with
@ESA__Education
. We are so excited to see the designs become real. 🛰️
O mo dhia! Táimid anseo ar scrúdú Gaeilge san Ardteist 2019! Comhghairdeas le gach duine a rinne an páipéar ar maidin agus an t-ádh is fearr libh as do scrúduithe

again while most of the rest of the team got to meet astronaut Shane Kimbrough at the US Ambassador’s residence. Shane’s launched quite a few cubesats from the ISS in his time as commander!
This week our software team unboxed the EQM On Board Computer in our Clean Room at the UCD School of Physics - a nice early Christmas Present! The software team will continue to write software on this
@ClydeSpace
computer in the New Year using the
@BrightAscension
software kit!
The battery remains in good condition and is being charged by the solar arrays. The onboard software continues to function without issue. In the coming days we will begin commissioning of the spacecraft to prepare for science operations.
Sarah updates us on EIRSAT-1’s education and outreach activities. Like Twitter. Hmmm, I wonder if this tweet will be in an outreach presentation someday?
The EIRSAT-1 team are incredibly excited and grateful to have our Antenna Deployment Module tested in the Hertz chamber at ESA's ESTEC centre this week, though we are sad we aren't there too! Thanks to
@ESA__Education
@ESA_Tech
for the continued support.
Translation for our non-Irish speakers - today we appeared on the Leaving Certificate Irish Paper 2 in the comprehension section! Good luck to all completing their exams

Good morning from ESTEC! We will be tweeting all week from the European Space Agency’s Space Technology Research Centre for our Fly Your Satellite! CDR Workshop
Many thanks to the
@UCD_Research
Impact team for our runner-up award in the UCD Research Impact Awards for 2019 - here’s
@jaaaaam
and
@LorraineHanlon1
accepting the award on behalf of the many students and staff from across UCD who work on Ireland’s first satellite
The EIRSAT-1 team have concluded the Critical Design Review workshop at ESTEC in the Netherlands. We have work to do when we get back and we’ve all learned a lot this week! It all feels very real now, and we’re excited for the next steps.
We’re so thankful to have so many valued supporters from across irish institutions and the Irish space and technology industry - tonight we thank you all, and wish you a Merry Christmas!
History in the making today in the EIRSAT-1 clean room where we are taking our EQM On Board Computer out of the box! Our OBC is supplied by
@ClydeSpace
. The software team have worked for many months and will be continuing to develop
@BrightAscension
software on our OBC in 2019!
Our second EIRSAT-1 doodle by
@JessicaErkal
- EIRSAT-1 will carry a novel Gamma-ray detector called GMOD which aims to detect Gamma-Ray Bursts. These are energetic signals from dying and colliding stars! Info about these events will be sent back to our Ground Station in UCD
We’re delighted to be part of the Space episode for
@10Things_ToKnow
! Looking forward to seeing it when it airs soon - thanks to the 10 Things team
#spaceweekirl
We have also sent commands from our ground station that were successfully received by the spacecraft. Data from the satellite show it experienced a nominal deployment from the rocket and the antennas deployed successfully.
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science from the diverse EIRSAT-1 team - we’re lucky to have some fantastic female astrophysicists and academic mentors on our team like
@JessicaErkal
@LorraineHanlon1
@SheilaMcBreen
@Lana_Salmon

The Antenna Deployment Module and the on-board radio have been cooled to -36C. A deployment test was performed and the antennas successfully deployed in the cold temperatures!
Alongside vibration testing of the Engineering Qualification Model of EIRSAT-1, this week the Antenna Deployment Module and the flight model of the on-board radio are in the thermal vacuum chamber. We will now begin to thermally cycle these subsystems.
