As a tax researcher, I was skeptical of rumors Trump buried his ex-wife in that sad little plot of dirt on his Bedminster, NJ golf course just for tax breaks. So I checked the NJ tax code & folks...it's a trifecta of tax avoidance. Property, income & sales tax, all eliminated.

@NavarreSteve Yes. I was surprised. That's why I checked and why I posted the thread. I couldn't believe her 3 kids--whom she apparently loved & who loved her--would allow their father to treat their mother like this. Burying Ivana in little more than a pauper's grave disgraces them all.

@jenmercieca Yes, but this could not have been Trump's decision: he had not been her next of kin for decades & had no right to decide her burial place. Ivana's *actual* next of kin--her still-living mom & 3 kids--or the executor of her estate, had to agree to this. THAT's the shocker.

@swolecialism Being unteachable seems to be a defining trait of libertarians; they are aggressively resistant to any information--historical or contemporary--that might puncture their fantasy of total autonomy & mastery over their domain. tl;dr: They won't learn sh*t from this. @BrendanBaber

@HUNTRRxHUNTRR Technically, he *was* there--half of him, at any rate. From the moment we're born, little girls' bodies come equipped with all the eggs we'll ever have in our lives. So the egg that would one day become your son *was* at that party, inside 5-yr-old you, waiting his turn to live.

@JessicaLitwin1 @RVAwonk I think about Marissa Alexander a lot. She fired that shot in a "stand your ground" state, too. That she went to prison while white guys get off scot free for murder on "stand your ground" claims...just goes to show that the laws exist to protect male (mostly white) supremacy.

Oligarchs: what & where they are🧵 1.They're not just Russians. They're everywhere-even Canada, as today's news shows-& they're not "just rich ppl." They're a subset of rich ppl who want to be an intl ruling class: shaping politics, markets & media outside their home countries.

@hawklyf49 @DrGJackBrown Classic move by abusers, at home and in politics: compliance-with-contempt. Like the wife-beater who says, "sure honey, I'll do the dishes," then calmly and methodically drops each plate onto the floor, making sure that it breaks.

Yes &: Behind those forms of capitalism are 2 forms of authority, at war in a much broader arena than the biz world. It's a war btwn what Max Weber called expert authority (based on merit) & traditional authority--patriarchal, senescent, the power of mafosi, oligarchs & warlords.

@AndreaKuszewski @thedesertginger Even Ivana's mother? Marie Zelníčková is very much alive & at 96 probably isn't as persuaded by bribes as Ivana's kids: for payoffs to be attractive, one must live long enough to enjoy the benefits. Selling out your only child for a handful of silver would be shocking.

@MoiraDonegan Oh give me a FUCKING break. The betrayal this woman is trying to pull off is staggering. Coney has birthed several kids & knows better than anyone else on that court the risks & rigors of gestation & delivery. She knows pregnancy can be debilitating & delivery sometimes kills.

Welcome new followers; for those interested in Trump's history of tax avoidance, here's a @nytimes piece I wrote on that subject ~2 yrs ago. I'm a sociologist w/a professional credential in wealth management, specializing in "tax optimization" research.

@thedesertginger For a woman who spent most of her life in $800 stiletto, surrounded by eye-popping opulence, I feel very confident that she would not have been okay with a rectangle of bare dirt, a tiny plaque & a flower arrangement that could have come from a gas station. This was her life:

OMG, I cannot believe he went there, but am so glad he did! This is how you REALLY gum up the works offshore: name & shame the professionals enabling the oligarchs. My research shows a LOT of conscience-stricken wealth mgrs out there; they need this kind of push to come clean.

Well. This is spicy. Conservative MP Bob Seely makes the most of parliamentary privilege to name individual London lawyers working for Russian oligarchs and questions their morality.

@tadpr0le @designmom No, you've got crucial claims wrong here--the Panama Papers story was broken by German journalists @f_obermaier & @b_obermayer . Daphne Caruana was murdered for investigating corruption in Malta: something the PP data substantiated, but her story was independent of the PP.

Oh nothing...just the exact things women have warned about for roughly 25 yrs, while being dismissed as hysterics, "humorless feminists," etc. We saw this coming and begged for help to stop it. But now the GOP is gunning for birth control, it's "bro what the fuck is going on."

We're trapped on the planet w/elites who, by & large, aren't interested in addressing the crises facing us all. They have resources to address the problems, but often won't use them bc they believe they won't be affected. They lack social solidarity. 11/x

@Ginger7730W @AndrewFeinberg @realDonaldTrump A lot of immigrants who become citizens (like Melania) end up much better informed about everything to do with the flag than native-born Americans because the immigrants actually have to pass a civics test as part of the naturalization process.

@KevinMKruse It looks like the kind of breakfast plate that mid-level domestic airlines used to serve in coach. No smothering in sight, not even a gd WAFFLE...I'll bet he doesn't even know about the jukebox.
