A graduate student who knows how to edit video edited a video for me. I told them to bill me their normal rate & they were all, “nah, that’s ok. I’m happy to do it.” I said state ethics law & my personal ethics require that I pay them for their time. So they sent an invoice.
I'm fascinated by the seemingly default assumption (made and propagated on the extreme right) that this is their country and the rest of us have to comply.
You know your democracy is broken when politics isn't about solving problems, but is about creating a string of hate-objects to keep your base engaged and enraged.
I only mention this because research on ethics, trust, and community shows that when people hear stories of people acting ethically, then they act more ethically. When we hear stories of people acting unethically, we lose trust in one another & democracy crumbles.
Trump uses ad hominem (attacking the person instead of their argument) to undermine the press. It's an authoritarian strategy of avoiding accountability and delegitimizing legitimate opposition.
I'm an expert on "legitimate political discourse," including protest. I can tell you with certainty that the January 6th insurrection was not legitimate, nor was it "political discourse." It was political violence.
We know better than to take advantage of other people’s time, especially those with less power than us. This student got zero educational benefit from editing this thing for me, yet they tried to give it away. That’s wrong & I said so.
There is no “news” in telling a story about a person adhering to personal and institutional ethical codes, so we don’t hear those stories. Anyway, build trust. Fight fascism.
I understand that Trump claims that people who read his speech thought it was appropriate. I'm an expert in rhetoric. It was not appropriate. He used war rhetoric and incited a violent insurrection against the United States.
The stories of Florida gagging its professors so they won't defend voting rights and Texas police refusing to help the Biden campaign when it was being threatened by Trump supporters last year are both ominous.
The political project of our time is to defend democracy.
About the question:
@PeterAlexander
was inviting Trump to take on the "priestly role" of the presidency--to act as the nation's consoler. He refused. Not only did he refuse, he attacked Alexander for asking for for it. Trump has never been able to perform this role.
I know what presidential opinion polls show, but I don't think folks realize just how pissed off we are about fascism in this country. Good job doing democracy Ohio.
Full text of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Milley's unsent resignation letter. (via Glasser & Baker in the New Yorker, in case you don't subscribe):
We are pissed that no problems are being solved.
Women are exhausted & full of rage that we are this exhausted.
Every woman I know, despite race, class, or partisan id is full of rage. And Trump is the worst kind of entitled, bullying, abusive doofus who can't solve anything.
Shelby v Holder will go down as one of the worst Supreme Court decisions made in the history of the US. Obstacles on top of obstacles to voting does not sound like a properly functioning democracy.
The extreme right has been defining what "America" is and which policies are and are not "American" for decades. Why let them? Why cede that very important ground? So doing cedes them the nation, effectively.
And, they did a great job! Someone asked me once if I have a "sizzle reel"--lol, what?--and I mentioned this to the grad student who knows how to edit and they made this! (please make "lunch at the Sizzler" jokes bc I am)
And it's not just RBG's death. It's an accumulation.
We are pissed about kids in cages, women with forced hysterectomies.
We are pissed about people being killed for no reason except for the color of their skin & protestors being silenced with force.
We are pissed about the false choice of sending our kids to school to get sick or quitting our jobs.
Or teaching them from home while doing our jobs.
We are pissed about fires & hurricanes & no where safe to go. We can't breathe inside or outside.
I would really appreciate it if someone could please just tag me when we find out why Trump is in DC so I don't have to spend my whole day refreshing the tweets. TY!
I see a lot of framing from news orgs that are reporting that "Trump is at war" "White House declares war" & etc. I get it. It tells a neat story. It's compelling.
But, it's Trump's framing, so let's take a minute to say why that's bad for the democratic process.
Mods/left are like, "that's cool, you do you, but liberal progress is natural/guaranteed" (the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice). That's totally not true. Liberal progress is not at all guaranteed. It has to be fought for and defended.
Shout out to all of the Trump fans who are feeling a lot of cognitive dissonance right now. If you've got one in your life--even if you haven't talked in a while cause things got weird, send a note. Invite them out for a coffee. Talk about anything other than Trump. Call them in.
The MI GOP leaders told Trump they desperately need coronavirus relief money and that they’re not going to mess with the election result.
Seems like the pretty blunt implication here that the president’s focus on the latter issue is distracting from the former.
America is democracy.
America is a nation that includes all & guarantees their rights.
America is a place for hopes & dreams.
America is a place for ingenuity & problem solving.
America is a force for good, and right, and justice.
America is always striving to be more American.
Should there be a 1/6 Commission? Yes. How far back should it go? At least to July, 2016. As I show in my book, Trump learned to say "stop the steal" from yahoos like Alex Jones & Roger Stone. It was always a plotline.
Brazos County won't restore the on-campus early-voting location at Texas A&M University for the 2022 elections.
For months, A&M students fought against county’s removal of the early-voting site — a decision students say would suppress the youth vote.
They've been able to do this so effectively because they've been determined to do it. It's been a central part of their plan to roll back rights & freedoms since the 1960s. But they've also been able to do this because the moderates/left have let them.
On South Lawn, WH seeks to make a political point by setting up a crane lifting the weights of regulation from the bed of a "red" truck, while showing the burden of regulations weighing down a "blue" truck.
Autocratic leaders don't put themselves in positions where they look weak. That's why we only see Trump in friendly interviews & on stage surrounded by true-fans. This is what Trump in the real world looks like. The least popular person to ever run for president in US history.
Oh my, a large crowd of thousands just booed the shit out of Trump, wouldn’t let him get a word in, and started chanting “lets go Biden.”
#NoTrumpAbortionBan
Perhaps instead of letting Trump frame himself as a victim of irrational aggression, it would be better to frame him as a criminal who is trying to avoid investigation.
Hey
@TheRickWilson
, seems like you might be having a bad day. Sorry about that, maybe folks can lovebomb you?
I only got to meet you in real life for a few minutes, but you were super nice to me. And I think that you're smart and funny. Look, aren't we cute?
@hforder
This grad student is paid poorly by the university and could use the money. They're also doing dissertation research and could use the money to fund that. Besides, it's the right thing to do. And, there are actual ethics rules that instruct me to do it.
What Rick is saying here is obviously true. Dems are playing normie politics (as if it still exists) and Trump's Republicans are playing infowarrior politics.
The old rules of political performance are dead. Wake up.
1/ This is outrageous contempt. It isn't just that this scumbag Lewandowski is slapping the committee with it.
This is a test, and the Democrats are going to fail it. They're so bad at this it makes me cringe.
This is a really interesting interview with
@TheRickWilson
about the
@ProjectLincoln
ad strategy. Will be of interest to political comm/campaign folks!
First, TC activates his audience members' "flight or fight" response. This is key because it activates the body's natural responses to fear--adrenalin & cortisol flood the brain, which "hijacks" the rational part of the brain, preventing critical thinking.
An interesting thing about the Meadows text messages is that Trump's inner circle wanted a bloodless autogolpe (self-coup), with the appearance of legality. The appearance of violence triggered all kinds of "this looks bad" from the coup plotters:
We need a "whole of society" approach to defending democracy. Defending democracy has to be the project of every sector of society. Every corporate decision has to be made asking, "will this help strengthen democracy?" Every media decision the same. Edu, gov, etc. etc.
oh, Lordy. There are tapes.
Notice also that Trump has good information and actual facts and is able to convey them clearly. He acts like a buffoon and denies facts in public & acts serious in private (esp with Woodward, who he wants to impress).
Scientists think that we can actually get addicted to outrage, fear appeals, and other emotion-baiting language that sets our adrenalin and cortisol responses in motion. We seek it out, wondering "what should we be afraid of today?" And everyone has a form of PTSD.
A teacher saw my kid in the bathroom wiping down the messy/wet sink. When asked why she was doing it, my kid said "I don't want Mrs. X <lady who cleans> to have to do extra work, so I'm helping her."
Friends, the principal pulled my kid out of class & gave her a little prize.🥹
Hello friends! I'm a little surprised to see so much interest in this thread, but I'm glad for it. I see some of y'all are debating ethics, carry on! 🥰
Mods/left Americans need to decide that this is their America. (maybe their America too, if you're feeling charitable). Then they need to define the sh*t out of what America means, who/what is American, and which political practices and policies are American. Like, now. 😳
The rightwing response to the Chinese balloon shows how they can twist a story to frame it as an American humiliation if it suits their propaganda needs.
Pay attention when they do that, claiming we are weak & humiliated is fascist. Trump ran on it in 2016.
Honestly surprised at how many texts the WH Chief of Staff receives, apparently. How many people have direct access to our government officials and what records are kept of those communications? Are they public or confidential?
If you deny the plot, the conspiracist accuses you of a cover-up, of trying to suppress the truth or free speech. If you deny the facts, the conspiracist says "they won't tell you the truth."
He's activated his audience's flight/fight response, he has their attention, but not their reason, and now he deploys his conspiracy narrative. Remember what I've explained about why conspiracy is so powerful & effective: it is a "self-sealing" narrative. It can't be disproven.
The candidates-should-debate letter is out – it is signed by ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, The AP, C-SPAN, Univision, NewsNation, NPR, PBS NewsHour, and USA Today
Everytime I hear Jack & Diane "life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone" I think--this HAS to be the saddest pop song. Why did we skate to it?
What's your vote for saddest pop song?
Another reason why the mods/left don't engage in the battle to define "America" is because they're ambivalent about what "America" is, what it means, what practices are/not American. That's totally natural, but obviously a weakness here.
I think it's really important that we all understand how this is done. It's so irresponsible to communicate in this way. It's effective, but unethical. Remember how it works when you try to talk to people who've been fooled by TC & his conspiracy theories and fear appeals.
Also, thinking about how the very clear fascist plan to take over America has made me feel less steady/secure in my place in the nation/world this week. If you're feeling this way too, then I think this thread explains why. This is our nation. We are America. Keep saying it.
This is how to report on Trump’s use of reification, fear appeals, and infestation rhetoric: don’t quote his words, state his strategies.
Quoting his words helps him, but describing the strategies doesn’t.
Trump pushes crime porn and collective guilt on undocumented immigrants. He then dehumanizes MS-13 members as "animals" and ridicules Nancy Pelosi for objecting to that characterization.
Trying to work at home and also homeschool your kid is basically impossible
Shoutout to all the parents out there right now trying to do what is not possible. ❤️
TC activated the f/f response by telling the story of a supposedly racially motivated shooting spree in which an African-American man targeted white men. He uses evocative language that puts his viewer in the place of the person shot, reaffirming they are in real danger.
Please note that the right claims the right/power to define "America" while also claiming to be "strangers in their own land." See how that works to empower an entire agenda? And how media reporting on disaffected rightwing Americans plays into those definitional assumptions?
This is what every Republican would sound like if it had been Democrats who attempted a coup against the United States. We would have heard this non-stop since Jan 6th.
🔥Karl Rove: “What those people did when they violently attacked the Capitol…is a stain on our history…Every one of those sons a bitches who did that, we ought to find them, try them, and send them to jail.”
The Capital Police threatened me with arrest for cheering in the Capital Rotunda while some nice old ladies unfurled a banner and read a speech about why we needed campaign finance reform.
They let the insurrectionists run free today. SMH.
Every Fox, OAN, Newsmax, Infowars--especially Tucker--story has this as its default assumption: this is your America and they are taking it away from you. You've probably internalized that message too. Think about how that disempowers the mods/left.
Consuming fascist propaganda like this makes you even more vulnerable to fascist propaganda. It is engineered/designed to create the conditions under which fascism flourishes. You cannot put Trump on tv without normalizing fascism in America.
Shorter: the legitimate and legally required impeachment inquiry is not a war against Trump, it is necessary to hold the president accountable to the rule of law.
