It is *Dr* Durre Shahwar. Today I passed my PhD viva with the absolute minor corrections. To say I'm thrilled and grinning like a maniac is an understatement. If only little me could see me now and know that she will be okay 🥹
EXCITING BOOK NEWS 🎉 I'm now repped by the brilliant
@Nelle_Andrew
at
@RMLagency
. I'm really happy to have found an agent who understands the premise of my book, my writing and who knows her stuff!! Here's me looking v. happy about it.
Some exciting news from me! Me and
@NSarwarSkuse
have signed with
@404Ink
granting world rights on an anthology of nature writing by women of colour. This idea has been a dream of mine for a while, and we have such an amazing lineup! 🌿🙌🏽
I finally found strength to watch
#Farha
on Netflix by
@DarinSallam
. A heartbreaking film about a 14-yr-old girl whose dreams of going to the city to study are destroyed along with her village in the 1948 Nakba (ethnic cleansing and displacement of 700,000+ Palestinians) . /1
Happy Publication Day to Welsh (Plural). I'm so glad to be a part of this anthology. Writing my essay on belonging in the landscape as a Pakistani-Welsh person was a real turning point in my writing / thesis / own book.
Some more exciting news (I will stop soon). I'm thrilled to be joining Wasafiri as the new Deputy Editor. I've admired this magazine for so long, even more so after being a writer-in-residence last year 💚
Meet our two newest team members! Wasafiri is delighted to introduce our new Deputy Editor
@Durre_Shahwar
and our new Digital Co-Ordinator
@lalah_springer
.
Learn more about them both:
Solidarity with every person of colour feeling that they are not "Welsh enough" due to this. You are. You are Welsh enough and you can be Welsh however the hell you want. Percentages of language do not define your Welshness.
Super happy to be a part of this programme - I'll be focusing on finishing my book and getting it out there and focusing more on my writing after doing a lot of community work the last few years. Diolch,
@LitWales
!
In response to a Home Office immigration raid, with the power of humanity and solidarity, the people of Peckham, SE15, mobilised, fought back and got their neighbour released.
This is people power - so beautiful to see
Looking to connect with a few writers, creatives, artists, community groups, activists working for climate justice at the moment from groups that are underrepresented (left out) in the wider climate change discourse. It's paid. Retweet/reply here with details 🌿
BREAKING: The Welsh Parliament has just voted for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The motion put by Plaid Cymru was carried 24 in favour, 19 against and 13 abstentions.
PC, Lib Dem and a number of Labour MSs backed the ceasefire motion.

I never do this, 'cos I believe in publishing when I'm ready, rather than publishing for the sake of it, but I've had 4 pieces accepted for publication already this year (and a big announcement coming later in the year) and I'm very excited. Alhamdulillah!
🌱Arts Council of Wales &
@NatResWales
are delighted to name the 8 successful artists who will make up the Future Wales Fellowship.
The Fellows will be given support to develop their own artistic work & challenge the way people think about climate change➡️
Excited to be mentoring
@durre_shahwar
over the next 12 months as part of
@LitWales
’ professional development programme for writers of colour! More info here:
This pride month, please remember coming out is a very western concept, and it's not actually the end goal (or a goal at all) for a lot of people for various legitimate reasons. Some people are happy just 'being'. One size doesn't fit all etc.
Glad that our government is spending money on killing innocent people and being on the wrong side of history rather than I dunno helping our NHS or the homeless or those going hungry and cold in the winter.
Yes, United States and United Kingdom killing Yemenis so that Israelis can receive their Amazon orders in a timely fashion even as they mass murder Palestinians.
The logic of our present.
We're SO excited to announce this incredible lineup of writers for GATHERING: Women of Colour on Nature. Each of their essays are unique & powerful and add to the wider conversation on nature and climate. You can read more and PRE-ORDER (!) on the link below 🌿 🙌🏽
@NSarwarSkuse
Announcing the full line up of Gathering: Women of Colour on Nature!
Nature writing is mostly male, white & middle class. Gathering carves space for British women of colour to explore nature, climate justice, their inherited histories & so much more.
🌿
I'm really pleased to announce that my non-fiction work-in-progress has been longlisted for the Morley Prize! Thanks to the judges,
@RMLagency
and
@morleycollege
.
We are delighted to announce the publication of the longlist for the Morley Prize this morning, 5th September. Congratulations to those listed, and for those who were not, please do not be discouraged and keep writing!
Thanks everyone for your kind messages and generosity. Seriously blown away. I'm exhausted and home after a bunch of tests, IV, x-rays. I'm recovering and going to take some time off from everything for a bit. Take care of yourselves x
✨
@WICFCardiff
turned 4 this year, and even though we're taking a hiatus to work on individual projects (hello PhD) and figure out our next steps, I'm so proud of what it's achieved. i.e. literally paving the way for better representation of Welsh writers & artists of colour ;)
When I was growing up in Pakistan as a kid, my mum used to write on a takhti (wooden board) in pencil which I'd then go over with ink to help me with my writing. Realised it's very similar to the Welsh writing slate. Kinda lush.

@DiLeed
I really think this is what bothers them. White people are used to owning and capitalising everything. The entitlement. And our stories are RICH. Our lives are rich. Our experiences. It irks them that they can't own that too. So they say we are policing. Or limiting imagination..
Love that my brilliant friend Jannat popped in to say hello today while I was teaching and encouraged my students to submit work to
@LucentDreaming
as a publisher 😍
I don't know who needs to hear this, but keep moving towards people that value your creative practice and way of writing, creating, thinking. This isn't to say be unwelcome to new approaches, but more that it isn't worth fighting for spaces that invalidate, rather than water you.
At
@hayfestival
for an event tomorrow and spotted Just So You Know at the festival bookshop, an anthology of essays featuring underrepresented voices from Wales, edited by me
@hanan_issa_
and Ozgur Uyanik ✨
I wrote about the hierarchies of language, telling stories, challenging structures, writing in English as a Pakistani-Welsh person, Urdu, takhtis, Welsh writing slate, Marwa Helal (thanks to
@monaeltahawy
) for
@poetrywales
latest issue on the Partition.
"I've been writing to connect with people, not to impress governments and monarchy. So how could I then, accept an honour that puts the word 'empire' onto my name?" Rest in power, Benjamin Zephaniah 💔
I am the woman, working class, person of colour, feeling silenced by the fact that you're refusing to listen and telling us, people with lived experience of racism, what racism is. It doesn't exist on a scale. Racism in any form is racism. The least you can do is condemn it.
Another full house for the Cardiff launch of GATHERING last night with a warm audience. The power of women of colour coming together to create something beautiful and game-changing,

Years ago at an event. A very established white male author after a reading I did told me my writing was cheating because it was drawn from my own experience. It literally stunted me from writing for a year or two. It sticks to me to this day when imposter syndrome creeps.
Grateful to all the women behind GATHERING this International Women's Day, but thinking of all the women and girls everywhere who deserve safety, freedom, liberation, autonomy, and are fighting against any form of oppression. 🇵🇸
A few more photos from the launch, which was a book club style launch rather than a panel so that everyone could share stories about their connection to nature 🌿
I don't know who needs to hear this, but you will work so much more efficiently if you take the time out to rest, rather than dragging yourself through work when you should be resting. It sounds like common sense but it isn't practiced enough.
GATHERING has been out in the world for a month and the response has really reaffirmed that there was a need for a book that amplifies women of colour's relationship to nature within a genre dominated by white middle class writers. We did a good thing. 🌿
I'm so pleased to share this personal and fragmentary autofictional essay as Writer-in-Residence with
@WasafiriMag
on language; the gaps within it, the slipperiness, somatic language, translation, anxiety, memory, and learning Urdu.
Hiya! I'm running a free, relaxed, creative writing workshop on nature as part of my Natur a Ni residency. Open to everyone, regardless of whether or not you're a writer. Places are limited so be sure to sign up.

More than anything, that Zadie Smith essay demonstrates her disconnect from activists and anyone organising around Palestine, or the discourse around the slogans that she claims have no weight. It's also written for a very American audience. So anyway, free Palestine.
Anthologies require a lot of hard work, patience, care, communication, and are often a labour of love. We're announcing our contributor list for 'Gathering' in the coming week or so. Keep a look out 🌿
@404Ink
Doing some editing and work on our anthology of essays on nature by women of colour today. Can't wait to share this beauty with you all. Out 2024 with

The best writing accolade as a brown person is being able to put a proof copy of a book you've co-edited into your dad's hand and him telling you good job and that he loves the cover. ♥️
Happy 60th,

@parthianbooks
and it wouldn't have been possible without your support, among others'. Here's to creating more books featuring underrepresented voices!
So many of us are often afraid as poc because lives, jobs, precarious connections are always on the line. Because we don't have the same privilege to say what we want and face no consequences. Because we are branded as emotional, as loud, as disruptors, as difficult, as liars.
I'm so pleased that my non-fiction work has now been shortlisted for the Morley Prize. Congratulations to all the other shortlisted writers too! Thanks to the judges and
@MorleyGallery
@RMLagency
My thirties so far have all been about starting again. Relationships, friendships, the way I am living or creating, or who I'm working with, who I let in. I actually think in many ways I'm braver in my 30s than I was in my 20s and I'm here for it. Nos da.
Happy Publication day to Gathering! Thank you to
@404Ink
,
@NSarwarSkuse
& the contributors for the work + beautiful words that make our mark on nature writing. Grateful to Welsh landscapes & my childhood landscapes in Pakistan that shaped my relationship to nature. 🌿
Had SO much fun discussing Gathering, nature writing, form, structure, editing, poetry and much more with
@clloyd9
at the
@thequeeremporiu
yesterday. Diolch to everyone that came.
There is a lot to be said about the collapse of institutions lately, institutions that were placed on a pedestal, institutions we thought we could change from the inside, institutions that appear to be doing decolonial, EDI, antiracist work but can't even condemn a genocide.
Some exciting news: I'm so very honoured to be
@WasafiriMag
's Writer-in-Residence. I love the work they do and their approach to writing and craft. Diolch for having me 🌿
We are delighted to welcome

I was reminded today of the very first essay of mine that was published in a book. It was on navigating different spaces as a working class writer, from physical to cultural. Had to read it again and found myself getting a bit emotional as it shifted things for me.

This whole KC, PP, and the way

Still can't contend with this pressure on poc artists to also act as community engagement officers to engage 'hard to reach' communities for organisations that have community engagement officers in place. We need to have a meaningful discussion as to why this is.

Idk who needs to hear this, but really learn to LOVE your writing. Like really love and believe in it and feel excited by it. Not whether others will love it. That only matters to an extent. But when you learn to love your own work, that's when you're free to make magic.
This week I'm behind on my thesis and a couple of projects and I feel low-key stressed about, but I've been more happy, healthy, and content down to my bones lately, and that's all that matters sometimes, especially if you have depression!
5 years ago me and Darren met when I organised a talk for The Good Immigrant at Cardiff Waterstones. This week, we're gonna be on a panel together at
@swanseastones
talking about a book we're both in!! Ripples, long shadows etc!
Thinking of Palestinian Muslims praying in the rubbles of bombed down mosques and having what little food they have for suhur and aftar. Hope and belief in the middle of so much pain and despair. May their prayers be answered this Ramadan. 🇵🇸
So proud of

Last week, I requested an inter-library loan of a newly released book that's directly relevant to my research and writing on autofiction. It wasn't available anywhere, so

This seems scary to admit, but it took me 3 years to find my true writing voice, yet we try to force novels out in a year or two and it seems alien to me to be so production driven and to not sit with the process enough.

Really needed this walk in the sun around a partly frozen Roath Lake today. You can see that the water is icy where the sun doesn't hit it directly. Actually felt the warmth of the sun after what seems like forever. 10/10 would recommend.
Spent a lovely morning at
@madeinroath2022
talking about my writing journey as a Muslim woman and hearing other women talk about theirs. Such a precious space. Diolch.
My tweets keep messing up so trying this again. If you're a reviewer or have some sort of a platform/mag/influence and you'd like an early proof copy of Gathering in October, then get in touch!
