Medical Director at Virta Health. Physician, all-patient advocate, researcher, mom and wife living with stage 4 cancer. Tweets are not ind medical advice.
This is Brad, Sarah's husband. It has been a heartbreaking week. Sarah always wanted to find ways to be of service to people with type 2 diabetes. She was relentless in using her voice to help others. We are grateful for your support in keeping her spirit alive.
Sarah's family and friends are founding a non-profit as a legacy for
@DrSarahHallberg
We plan to continue her passion for educating people about the possibility of reversing a T2 diabetes diagnosis--and will dedicate work to this extraordinary legacy.
A little update on my cancer journey. My family and I have received a joyful Christmas gift. I wish love, health and happiness for all those suffering from chronic disease this holiday season!
I received good news on Monday. No new tumors despite being off all treatment for 6 weeks. 3 existing tumors have grown, but only one substantially. This is a great day for someone with EGFR lung cancer!
@EGFRResisters
@LUNGevity
I want to thank everyone for all the amazing support you have given me. I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon and I remain in the fight towards improved health FOR ALL as I am remarkably still in remission. There is still so much to be done!
I am so frustrated when nutrition researchers continue to use the term low carbohydrate diet when the intake was 40%! This is much closer to a SAD diet and leads to more confusion and mistrust of the entire nutrition community. A low carb diet is <26%! Very low carb is <10%!
So, I have been a patient advocate for years. Some things I believe as a physician and as a human: 1. People are inherently worthy, 2. We need to stop blaming people for their disease (far too often still occurs with obesity and T2D) 3. Medicine does not have all the answers
Parenting is hard. Period. We all screw up constantly. The struggle when you have advanced cancer is that you you won't be around to laugh at yourself with your kids when the are older and help them make better decisions. You just hope they will forgive your imperfections.
The literature is full of papers blaming a high fat diet on increased levels of serum SFA. However, the evidence shows that it is actually the background CARBOHYDRATE consumption that causes an increase in serum SFA. This is CRITICAL to understand.
So frustrating! There is a solution to obesity and metabolic disease. Doing the same thing over and over and then blaming those suffering is NOT the answer. We need to embrace therapeutic carb restriction and disease reversal!

Why are health officials not talking more about obesity +

deaths? Is it bc they have no real solutions? Bc diets, such as cutting sugars, starches, make no $ and are (thus) opposed by industry? Silence on such an important subject is deafening.
Low carb diets were left out INTENTIONALLY. The inclusion criteria was specifically set up to exclude them. This type of anti-science behavior MUST stop. Please call your Member of Congress. THIS CAN'T WAIT - there are too many lives at risk. RT please!
Virtually every low-carb study will be ignored when the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee presents its draft report on June 17. It is unacceptable. Tell your Member of Congress to delay this report!
Honest representation of evidence is important. How many people have heard someone say that a low carb diet is associated with increased mortality? There is no evidence for this. Here are all the studies that make that claim. None were actually low carb. Much closer to SAD.
walking in the shoes of someone with chronic disease when it comes to COVID or, well, anything. No one makes a choice to live with a chronic disease.

published many stories this week, some of questionable impact. The one they did NOT report on was the 2-year results of a LARGE study showing over 50% reversal of T2D! Since over half of the adults in this country have DM or PreDM - seems relevant.
Here is something that really disturbs me. I asked

Congratulations! Oh heaven yes! One must believe in miracles when it comes to cancer. Without that hope and optimism the disease can crush you. With gratitude and belief in miracles it is possible to cherish even the toughest days.
This is spot on! Diabetes and insulin resistance are taking over. It is time to push the panic button and look at what is right in front of us to solve the problem. We don't need another drug. We need a supported way to change how we eat.
So the question is - who is more responsible for misleading the public with junk science - the journals who publish this crap or the news outlets who irresponsibly report on it?

I am in my 7th year of a terminal & once inoperable brain tumour where I was told I had 6-9 months left to live without radiotherapy and chemotherapy. I have survived for this long using ketogenic metabolic therapy & in 2017, an awake craniotomy. Mental resilience is key.
Democracy survives!! We need to focus on unity now. I was lucky enough to be able to go with my son to cast his first vote for a winner! (when did I shrink?)
We all need to work together to get sugar out of every nook and cranny in our food system. Can you imagine paying for groceries and not having to walk through the forest of sugar to get to the cashier? Together we can do this!

This DGA report is basically flipping the bird (is that still a term) to science and the scientific method. My heart breaks for all the vulnerable individuals in this country whose food assistance will be guided by this garbage. They need all of our help!
Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report is out.
As bad as you could imagine:
-Says eating sat fats causes heart disease and evidence is "strong" (Ignores entire last decade of science on this)
-Excludes all studies on weight loss 1/

Excited to dive in! Important note: No peaceful protesters were gased in order to get this book photo op. Also notice how nicely I have it right side up!
RT please - T2D reversal is possible, especially early in the disease and all patients deserve to know. Every patient has the right to make their own choices but no one will choose reversal if they do not know it is an option!

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed? YES. Our 1 year study results found that reversal occurs in 60% with a low carb intervention providing support. Time to change the paradigm.

Great op-ed. The Dietary Guidelines have failed to keep Americans healthy. Worse, it is beyond a reasonable doubt that they have and continue to contribute to the "sickening" of America.
An exciting day at Virta and for people suffering from

Proud to announce that Virta has raised $133M from Tiger Global, that we’ll put towards scaling our diabetes reversal treatment to serve & save even more patients w/ chronic disease. It’s time to take

Thank you so much. I am so honored to have my work recognized. Once we presented the data, the concept of reversal/remission has been bolstered by the grass roots movement of people who have experienced it! Everyone has the right to choose this option for T2D.
15 yrs ago it was accepted that "type 2 DM is a chronic progressive dz that requires ⬆️ med over time." That was the evidence... but it wasn't inherently true. It has taken people like Dr. Roy Taylor,
@DrSarahHallberg
,
@lowcarbGP
, to bring hope of remission to our medical lexicon
New study published in JACC “…the amount of circulating SFAs in blood is not related to saturated fat intake from the diet but instead tends to track more closely with dietary carbohydrate intake” this needs attention by the public and researchers alike! RT please
The literature is full of papers blaming a high fat diet on increased levels of serum SFA. However, the evidence shows that it is actually the background CARBOHYDRATE consumption that causes an increase in serum SFA. This is CRITICAL to understand.
Davon’s cancer has returned and is aggressive. He’s in hospital and starting chemo tonight. We’ve got a long road ahead and appreciate your prayers! He hates being stuck in hospital, I would love to show him how many people are thinking about him. Can you reply for him?
I was contacted about being a possible bone marrow match after almost a decade on the registry but my own cancer excludes me. Please consider joining

OK, so here is the deal. The DGA's are a joke. We can't just say "it's not a rigorous review" any longer because it is way worse than that. The methods used make a mockery of science. Delay the release of the DGAC report and FIX this embarrassment.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is rising along with obesity and T2D rates. There are no pharmaceutical interventions available. Could it be that we don't need one? Could the answer to the problem be.....food?
@bigfatsurprise

Can a low carbohydrate intervention with support be sustained? YES. At 1 year our study results show an 83% retention rate. Time to change the paradigm.

CGM's are absolutely helping revolutionize diabetes care! I predict we are not far away from the time when everyone with diabetes (T1D and T2D) is wearing them! It helps patients personalize their nutrition and is an eye opener on the impact of carbohydrates!

When are we going to start paying attention to the obesity AND type 2 diabetes epidemic? What if it was projected that 50% would soon have an infectious disease? We would be in all out effort mode and working TOGETHER to solve the problem. Why should this be any different?
Yes! Everyone needs to know this can be done! Congratulations on changing a life to kick off the new year, and congratulations to this patient who is likely going to be around longer to see that adorable baby grow!
My first success story for 2021!
69 year old chap admitted with HHS with new onset T2diabetes and BG of 41. Discharged on 35 units of insulin and told lifelong. I got my low carb claws into him and now 20kg down, A1c 34, OFF ALL MEDS. Everyone needs to know this is possible!
Great. Just what we need. $ spent to convene a group of "experts" with the outcome once again to blame the public for not following the guidelines. This is so old and not just unproductive, but stirs the pot of distrust and for good reason. Sad.
Thank you so much! This award should really go to all the patients who have improved their metabolic health! I am always in awe of what the human spirit can do!!
@virtahealth
This could not have been awarded to a more deserving person! Congrats,
@DrSarahHallberg
, for all that you have done and continue to do for us Virta participants and society as a whole! Love you!
For Type 2 Diabetes, an even better goal would be diabetes reversal and no need for insulin at all. We know this can be done! Let's add this important goal!
when I was diagnosed with advanced cancer. I have a gene mutation that is similar to having a BRCA gene, but this one put me at risk for many cancers. I have not spoken publicly about this until now for fear of being attacked which really means I really understand my patients
It is

. In June it will be 4 years since I was diagnosed with stage 4 EGFR exon 19 lung cancer. Lung cancer in nonsmokers is on the rise and more research into this disease is needed! I thank science for extending my life!
Therapeutic carbohydrate restriction can be tailored to fit any type of diet so patients do not have to give up their food culture. This is so important as food is part of who we all are, and that can be respected while also making people healthier!
Even in populations hard hit by
#type2diabetes
, reversal is possible. Our patients at Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation are seeing unprecedented health and economic outcomes. Thank you MPTN for partnering to make this happen!
So important to understand that very high SF diets do not lead to high serum SFA in the context of carbohydrate restriction. The high fat diet always gets blamed, but no attention is paid to what is consumed along with the fat and THAT is what matters!
@virtahealth
This is 100% true. We are all in this together. This is NOT time for stirring the pot. This is time to support each other. Everyone should be doing their part to help slow the spread of this disease. Comparing this to the flu - unreal and irresponsible.
Seriously, anyone still comparing
#COVID19
to the flu should stop today. In Italy 627 died yesterday (!) from COVID-19. That's about 36% of total Italy deaths, despite being concentrated in north & still going up fast.
It's NOT the flu.

Sarah would have been so sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Adele Hite, a fellow pioneer for the science/practice of reversing type 2 diabetes. It's such an honor that Adele chose to make our new group, Reversing T2, part of her legacy. So grateful!

Yes! We CAN reverse Type 2 Diabetes! Here is our new paper discussing reversal: Given the unprecedented rise of metabolic disease, it is imperative for everyone to know there are ways to regain health!
Celebrating Dr. Sarah's amazing leadership by retweeting this TEDx talk that I've sent to umpteen folks since viewing it years ago, when it first aired.
now in ways I could never have imagined. COVID-19 has been difficult for all my high risk patients who suffer from T2D, and it has been rough for cancer patients all around the world. We need to do better to protect all of us. We also need to work really hard to imagine

Actually for someone with T2D I recommend starting under 30 gr of carbs per day - total. 60gr per meal will guarentee disease progression. That will make the pharmaceutical companies happy, but I am sure that it is not what any patient wants to see!!
We used to have little nutrition data on minority populations. It is so important to understand the clinical outcomes with different populations! Here is a Chinese T2D study. The more we target specific demographics the closer we get to personalized med.

Study from Harvard purporting to show red meat increases death. Derived from notoriously unreliable food-frequency questionnaires asking people. Plus, this is just a tiny association (not causation) that cannot possibly rule out confounding (eg., red-meat eaters smoke more, etc)
Please read this paper! These results are important. We must always treat each patient as an individual, but the idea that therapeutic carbohydrate restriction increases CVD risk factors overall is not supported by the evidence!
Dr. Ratner is absolutely correct. We can't sustain the growth of T2D. To move forward will take an honest and unbiased assessment of the data available by the entire medical community. We CAN do this. T2D can be put in remission!
