The church REALLY needs a robust biblical theology of heaven & the new creation. It's a shame we haven't devoted much time to the nature of the eternal state. 😞

Beale: "The land promises will be fulfilled in a physical form when all believers inherit the earth, but the inauguration of this fulfillment is mainly spiritual until the final consummation in a fully physical new heaven and earth." 🌏
What is the relationship between Israel, the land promises of the Bible, and is it still relevant to the church in our time?
G.K. Beale argues that none of the references to the promise of Israel’s land in the Old Testament appear to be related to the promises of ethnic Israel’s…

I've taught Greek for 10+ years, and I find myself telling students that one of the primary reasons we learn Greek is to discern Old Testament allusions in the New Testament.

@ivpacademic
book, The Return of the Kingdom: A Biblical Theology of God’s Reign. 👑
The project is so good—one of the richest, most accessible treatments on the kingdom I’ve read.
What to know more about "allusions"?
Read Chris Beetham "Quotation, Allusion, & Echo" in Dictionary of the New Testament Use of the Old Testament. Edited by G.K. Beale, D.A. Carson, Benjamin L. Gladd, and Andrew Naselli. Grand Rapids: Baker, 2023.
This is the most succinct…
At Jesus' baptism, Luke alludes to the flood account and Ezekiel's vision 🌊😶🌫️:
Luke 3:21 "As he was praying, heaven opened [ἀνεῳχθῆναι τὸν οὐρανὸν]"
Genesis 7:11 "the floodgates of the sky were opened [τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἠνεῴχθησαν]"
Ezekiel 1:1 "the heavens were opened…

This allusion is off the charts!
Mark 1:10 "As soon as he came up OUT OF THE WATER [ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος], he saw the heavens being torn open"
Exodus 2:10 "She named him Moses, 'Because,' she said, 'I drew him OUT OF THE WATER [ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος].'"
What is true of Moses is true…
Why do I love biblical theology so much?? I grew up reading the Bible piecemeal, and I couldn't figure out how it held together.
So, one of my chief goals is to make the unity of the Bible more accessible—that believers may see how all of Scripture relates to Christ's life,…

My Handbook on the Gospels with
@BakerAcademic
releases today! 🧵
Why I wrote it: ✅
1) To help pastors prepare sermons, students write papers, and lay people grasp the heart of the four Gospels.
How many were Christians in the early church??
Hurtado claims,
"there may have been about one thousand Christians in 40 AD, about seven to ten thousand by 100 AD, about two hundred thousand or a bit more by 200 AD, and by 300 AD perhaps five to six million” (pg. 3).
John's gospel records Jesus' first week of ministry:
DAY 1: 1:19–28
DAY 2: 1:29–34 (“on the next day”)
DAY 3: 1:35–42 (“on the next day”)
DAY 4: 1:43–51 (“on the next day”)
DAY 6: 2:1–11 (“on the third day,” i.e., two days later)
"the first six days of the work of Jesus at…

I’ve known him for twenty years, and he hasn’t lost one bit of his zeal for Scripture. 💪
I know I’m in the minority here, but when NT authors affirm the meaning of OT passages/events, they are always 100% right.
The apostles learned how to read the OT at home and in the synagogue, of course. But, Jesus himself taught them how to interpret the OT the right way.
