@SSalyers2 We should avoid the word ‘slaves’ in this. It is emotive, inaccurate and hurtful to those whose ancestors genuinely fell into that category. Scots in these circumstances were ‘indentured servants’. This was awful and brutal but it cannot truly be compared to slavery.

Contrary to its political labels, the Western Isles has to be the most politically conservative constituency in Scotland. Most incumbents re-elected. Newcomers largely elected in seats where people have resigned. Only 2 women. Little has changed since my youth. ☹️☹️

The other day when I was driving to Portpatrick, I ended up in a constant loop travelling between Portree, Port Ellen and Port Askaig. Could something not be done about these confusing English signs that are found throughout Scotland? They might cause accidents.

As someone who can recall the devastating effects of a murder on the west side of Lewis, when I was 12 years old, I can only sympathise with what the people of Skye and Wester Ross are going through at the moment. Thoughts are with them.
