Today - November 1st - marks a historic day in my office
@CommissionerDA
It's the day that I formally get my powers which means that public authorities have a duty to a) cooperate with us and b) respond to our recommendations within 56 days.
We want to hear from all
#DomesticAbuse
survivors so we can understand whether all victims needs are met by services. That is key to our mapping
We have listened to feedback from survivors + our office has amended survey to explicitly inc biological sex
Today the CPS have published their latest figures on domestic abuse. Sadly the outcomes continue to be distressing and unacceptable. Comparing year ending June 2022 to year ending June 2016, prosecutions are down 48% and convictions are down 46.8%. This cannot continue.
I am delighted to have been re-appointed as the Domestic Abuse Commissioner
I am very proud of what we have achieved so far inc mapping services, family courts, migrant survivors etc + will continue to work hard to tackle
#DomesticAbuse
for all victims
Thanks
@jessphillips
for sharing the names of UK women killed over last year where a male suspect has been charged/identified
And
@K_IngalaSmith
@CountDeadWomen
for this v important work
We must have a domestic homicide oversight mechanism to record all DA related deaths
Thank you
@jessphillips
for reading the names of women killed by male suspects in the last year.
There are still far too many. We need to see urgent action from leaders across government and all public agencies to tackle violence against women & girls and prevent future deaths.
"I am tired of fighting for systematic change and being given table scraps"
Labour MP Jess Phillips reads the names of the women killed as a result of violence over the past year
📢 My analysis today shows nearly 18,000 domestic abuse crimes are missing from police statistics - after police were instructed to count fewer crimes.
Administrative ease must never come before accurate recording of domestic abuse.
My statement:
Anyone who has a secret phone that they may hide from an abusive partner needs to read this + take action to switch it off or put in on airplane mode.

I am extremely concerned by harrowing reports on

I hear from hundreds of victims & survivors about the devastation wrought by family court proceedings.
We need urgent and wide-reaching reforms to restore public faith in the family court

That a fifteen year old girl was killed on her way to school yesterday is devastating.
My thoughts are with her family and loved ones who are facing an unthinkable tragedy.
Girls & young women should be able to live free from violence on the streets and in their relationships.

I am extremely concerned by this decision by the Court of Appeal. There needs to be a far better understanding of
#DomesticAbuse
- it's not uncommon for someone to be murdered by their partner or ex and there to be no recorded history of domestic abuse.
It is extremely concerning to see Home Office figs that show that the proportion of victims dropping out of prosecutions has trebled from 8.7% to 26.4% since 2015 - 1.3m cases.

It's time to change the 6 month time limit on common assault prosecutions for
#DomesticAbuse
survivors.
@YvetteCooperMP
said today the current limit means that many perpetrators are not charged and are then free to commit more crimes. I hope the Govt will back her amendment.
I'm concerned to see Govt scrapping short sentences without a water-tight exemption for perpetrators of domestic abuse, sexual offences or stalking.
Current provisions don't go far enough to protect victims.

10% fewer domestic abuse crimes have been recorded in new statistics today - after new counting rules instruct police to deliberately record fewer crimes.
This downplays the reality for victims and the work of police to protect them.

Great that the new Non Fatal Strangulation Offence comes into force today after so much hard work by many.
Now we must see a co-ordinated Government strategy so that it is effectively understood + implemented + does not gather dust on statute shelves.

Important reporting

@Independent
shows some 11,040 were jailed for 12 months or less for harassment, stalking & image-based abuse last year.
@MoJGovUK
must seriously consider the safety of victims of domestic abuse and set out clearly how they will be protected.
I believe the 10% drop in police-recorded
#DomesticAbuse
published last week is artificial, due to new rules allowing police to count fewer crimes.
Administrative ease should not be prioritised at the expense of domestic abuse victims.
This is simply not good enough. 1/2
This is deeply troubling.
Domestic abuse is a devastating, widespread crime. Separation is known to be a very high risk time.
The police - and every agency around the victim - must be equipped to respond quickly & safely.
My thoughts are with the victims of this awful attack.
NEW: Police believe motive behind Clapham chemical attack was the breakdown of a relationship between suspect Abdul Ezedi and the 31-year-old victim.

Gov must reverse these changes pending full evaluation⬇️
Migrant survivors of domestic abuse already face huge barriers to accessing support simply because of their immigration status.
Such a significant financial burden will force many survivors to stay with their abuser. I urge govt to review this policy.

Govt must put

We need decisive action and proper long-term funding.
