PLAYERS:
A coach will coach your technique. A coach will coach your game intellect. A coach will coach your practice habits. A coach will coach your fundamentals.
A coach should NOT have to coach your energy. Ever.
Your energy reveals your attitude and how badly you want it.
Great leaders bring different people all together, all working towards one goal.
Toxic leaders separate those people & make sure they know they aren’t a part of the group.
MUST WATCH. Especially for you seniors who want to make freshman “pay their dues.”
As perennial national power
@VandyBoys
begin fall practice, you’ll notice not one player wearing anything that says Vanderbilt.
Why?
Because they have built a culture where every player- including returnees- has to EARN the PRIVILEGE of wearing that ‘V’.
Many teams have rules like being on time, wearing a uniform correctly, shaving, or dressing professionally. These things have nothing to do with baseball. They have everything to do with doing what’s asked of you... and THAT has everything to do with becoming a great player.
Everyone sees an incredible walk-off steal of home. What no one sees is the gathering of information in the pitches prior that made the runner think he could make it.
Paying attention to the tiny details of the game is a separator skill… that wins games.
When asked about what he’ll remember about coaching pitcher, Kumar Rocker,
@VandyBoys
head coach Tim Corbin doesn’t mention a single word about him as a pitcher.
There is a direct correlation between who you are as a person with who you are as an athlete.
Roy Halladay was demoted from Toronto down to A-ball to rebuild his delivery.
Mariano Rivera signed for $2500 out of a tryout after a scout saw him play SS.
All opportunities aren’t created equal. But you do have an equal opportunity to make the most of whatever chance you get.
You look cool when you run hard and turn routine outs into hustle hits. You look cool when you play catch with pride and throw the ball how you’re supposed to. You look cool when you pick up a teammate after an error or K.
The cool way to do things IS the right way to do things.
Victor Caratini in the batter’s box today:
1st AB- K
2nd AB- K
3rd AB- K
4th AB- K
5th AB: three-run, walkoff home run
Your previous at bats have absolutely nothing to do with your next one, unless you let them. Short memories make for long careers.
Winning players make winning plays.
But winning plays aren’t the plays most think of. They are the plays you DON’T see in the box score, like backing up.
Backing up is not a skill; it’s an attitude that shows the will to do what you’re supposed to do.
“I am a huge believer in being coached. I get frustrated when I’m not corrected on a mistake that I have made.”
“You get better or you get worse. You don’t stay the same.”
“Treat practice like a game.”
-Peyton Manning MUST WATCH:
Championship teams are made up of championship players who make championship plays... plays that don’t show up in the stat sheet but help win championships.
Plays like this👇
This ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
A kid may not have the perfect swing. A kid may throw weird. A kid may clank the catch. But if that kid is having fun playing the game, he’ll keep playing the game.
COACHES/PARENTS: Let our game be just that... a game. A fun game.
Not a starter? Practice better.
Umpire call a bad strike? So what, move on.
Get sent down to A-ball? Moping around wont get you up to AA. Taking advantage of your opportunity, will.
The defense made an error behind you? So what, go make another pitch and pick them up.
Get up.
“It’s all practice. I run the bases during BP. In spring training we are running bases. Constantly putting in the work for this time.”
Most players don’t take the same pride in baserunning that they do with other parts of their game.
Mookie Betts is not most players.
AVERAGE vs ELITE:
Avg says “I’m good”
Elite says “Good isn’t good enough”
Avg turns 2-2 into 2-5
Elite turns 0-3 into 2-5
Avg shows up on time
Elite shows up early
Avg makes excuses
Elite takes blame
Avg mindset brings elite talent down. Elite attitude brings avg ability up.
DO YOUR JOB.
Pitchers: throw quality strikes.
Defense: take care of the ball, and throw it to the correct base. Be in the proper backup spot.
Hitters: have competitive ABs. Hit to the situation/count. Make your outs productive.
Baserunners: make smart, aggressive decisions.
Playing catch is, without question, the most important fundamental skill of the game. Pitching and defense are both simple extensions of playing catch. Teams who play catch the best are the teams who win. If you can’t play catch, you can’t play.
#STdrills
Learning how to swing without talking about the swing.
Becoming more athletic without a word about athleticism.
Figuring out contact points. How the feet work. Timing. How to use the lower half.
All from a drill that simply tells the hitter to “hit the ball.”
PLAY CATCH.
It’s the most important fundamental skill of our game. Pitching and defense are both extensions of playing catch. The teams who play catch the best are usually the teams that win the most.
If you can’t play catch, you can’t play.

The guy has 34 home runs, takes the ball every fifth day, and runs harder from home to first than any other player in the league.
Effort is a decision, not a skill.
439 MLB players have made at least 35 competitive runs to first base so far this season.
None have had a quicker average time than Shohei Ohtani!

IF YOU CAN’T PLAY CATCH, YOU CAN’T PLAY.
Playing catch is THE most important fundamental skill of the game. Generally speaking, the teams that play catch the best are the teams that win the most because they know how to take care of the ball.

Been watching this on a loop... man, this is so pretty.
#WatchTheGame
The pre-pitch is all about being in a position to be quick. Rendon is in constant motion and light on the balls of his feet during his pre-pitch which sets him up perfectly to do this:
PLAY CATCH.
Playing catch is not something you do to get loose. It’s not something you do to warm up. It is a drill that translates in every game you will ever play. Pitching is catch. Defense is catch.
If you can’t play catch, you can’t play.

2016- 2nd round draft pick
2017- led all of Minor League baseball in hitting in 2017. As a teenager.

2019- hit .311 in his MLB debut season. At 21 years old.
THE TEE AIN’T JUST FOR TEE-BALLERS

HITTERS: timing is the key element to hitting. With timing, the ugliest swing has a chance. Without it, even the most mechanically perfect swing doesn't. But you don't get timing in the batter's box; you get it from the dugout and on-deck circle.
#STdrills
The next time your coach:
-Gets on you for not hustling or backing up plays
-Spends time focusing on baserunning
-Teaches you how to bunt
-Consistently works on PFP

-JD Martinez: drafted in the 20th round
-Betts was hitting .198 a month and a half into his 1st full season

THE PERFECT RELAY.
If any part of this play isn’t precise, it’s a run. If Kiermaier double pumps, he’s safe. If Adames one-hops the throw, he’s safe. If d’Arnaud reaches to catch, he’s safe.
Each part of this relay can be practiced. Practice perfection.
When your playing career is over, you won’t be remembered for the stats on the back of your baseball card. Rather you’ll be remembered as the guy in the picture on the front, and the impact you had on others. How you made them feel. How you helped them grow.
Be a great teammate.
Many think that playing infield is all about the hands. It’s really about the ability to be athletic with your feet that allows the hands to work.
The feet make the catch. The feet make the throw. I bet you can’t watch Gunnar Henderson’s feet just once.
BASERUNNING IS A WEAPON.
When there’s a bang-bang play and the runner is out, most look only at the end result. Often times, the route out of the box and around 1st is the difference between being out or safe at 2nd. Practice those tiny details.
#STdrills
Nelson Cruz hit .311 with 41 home runs last year. At 38 years old.
He’s a six-time All-Star.
He has 401 career HR and 1119 career RBIs.
The work he puts in on the tee gets his swing where he needs it to be.
THE TEE AIN’T JUST FOR TEE-BALLERS.

Miguel Cabrera is one of the best hitters- if not the best- of his generation.
For him, hitting is far more than max damage at all times. For him, hitting is an art. And his career painting is the epitome of what the art of hitting truly looks like.
TRIPLE HEAD:
A simple, yet very impactful drill to isolate the hands on three different types of ground balls, with an emphasis on getting the head and eyes down with the glove.

IF YOU CAN’T PLAY CATCH,
YOU CAN’T PLAY.
It is the most important fundamental skill of the game. Pitching and defense are both simple extensions of playing catch. It’s not a warm up; it’s a drill that translates into every game you’ll ever play.

HITTERS: Your top focus to become a great hitter is to simply barrel the baseball. Once you can do that consistently- regardless if that's in the air, on the ground, or on a line- you'll be able to learn how to drive the ball and do damage because you have the hardest part down.
Bunting is the game’s lost art.
Most believe the bunt base hit is found in the element of surprise or a big jump out of the box, so they usually foul the pitch off. The hit is found in placement, put in a spot where you can’t be out. Bunt first, then run.
Versatility is value.
2B Murphy (also plays 1B/3B)
SS Baez (2B/3B/OF)
3B Bote (1B/2B/OF)
LF Bryant (moonlights at 3B)
RF Zobrist (plays every spot in every sport)
So the next time your coach asks you to play elsewhere, it’s not an insult. It’s an opportunity.
#postseason
The pitcher who owns you does not feel sorry for you.
A hitter who you can’t get out doesn’t feel sorry for you.
No one in their right mind who you’re competing against will ever feel sorry for dominating you.
So stop feeling sorry for yourself.
GET UP.
Do something about it.
Baserunning is arguably the game’s biggest separator skill because so few genuinely care about it or work at it. Things like the precision of a turn or where the base is touched may be the difference between out & safe... win & loss... ring or...
#STdrills
Want to know if a player is focused on the game? Watch where they go when the ball is NOT hit to them.
Backing up plays is not a skill, but an attitude. It's taking pride in being where you're supposed to be, when you're supposed to be there.
#STdrills
Hadn’t heard from a good friend since this whole thing began. Started to worry so I went to his home where he was fine just sitting on the couch. He said, “I threw my phone away. Wanted to feel what it was like to miss a ton of calls again.”
He’s an umpire.
DAY 12. No baseball.
This is a baseball play. A completely legal baseball play. A play that few teams discuss and practice, and only get a handful of chances to execute it in a season.
Tonight, the Cardinals successfully executed the play, and won the game because of it.
THE PERFECT PRE-PITCH.
This play shows why the pre-pitch is SO important. Lindor’s first step off the bounce is so quick that he’s able to make a diving play. If he’s too late or stuck-in-the-mud too early, the ball gets through.
Practice your pre-pitch!
Jackie Bradley is currently hitting under .200, but saved the game last night- that his
@RedSox
eventually won- with this catch.
When you learn how to separate the game, you’ll see there are countless ways to help your team win beyond the batter’s box.
MAKE THE DEFENSE STOP YOU.
Fred Hill, my college coach, used the expression “run for the possible.” Sure single? Round 1st for the possible double. Sure double, run for 3. Sure out? No such thing.
This is what it looks like when you round 1st correctly:
This was not a swing to do damage. This was also probably not a swing that anyone would practice. This was a two-strike battle swing.
This may have been the at bat of the game because without it, there is no series winning sac fly.
Contact matters. Contact will ALWAYS matter.
The next time your coach adds baserunning to practice, you can either 1) screw around with your buddies and just going thru the motions, 2) or get laser-focused reps that will translate to runs that might win you some games... just like it helped the Dodgers win the
#WorldSeries

If you swing at everything in batting practice, you’re probably going to swing at everything in a game. Pitches you take in BP are just as important as the ones you go after when developing the plate discipline necessary to become a good hitter.

Outfielders will rarely have to cut and pivot in games, like last year’s American League MVP does in this three-ball drill. But they will always need the type of athleticism and footwork (especially on their first step) that this drill develops.
#STdrills
This is what anticipation looks like. This is what baseball instincts look like.
When you think about the play before it happens, you’ll make the play as if you have eyes in the back of your head.
The brain is the baseball player’s sixth tool. Use it.
GLOVE ANGLE: a tiny detail that makes a big difference. It’s a non-teach for most but should be a must-teach for all.
With the fingers down, palm facing the plate, the glove is as big as possible. When infielders catch raindrops, they are making a small glove, smaller.
#STdrills
COMMUNICATION: the most underrated aspect of team fundamentals.
Whether you are getting the out on a bunt, executing a rundown, or throwing the ball back in on a relay, you should always be talking on the field. The diamond isn’t a library!
#STdrills
HITTERS: chasing hits can lead you on a constant path right back to the dugout.
Chase the things that will enable the hits to come. Chase that which you can control every single day. Chase that which shouldn’t slump:
Plate discipline
Approach
Timing
Swing feel
Competitiveness
Big leaguers make errors.
Big leaguers strike out.
Big leaguers walk guys.
Big leaguers aren’t perfect; they’re human.
What makes a Big Leaguer a Big Leaguer is their ability to turn that failure & adversity into that which makes them, not that which breaks them... by LEARNING.
This is one of the best plays I have ever seen. It is the epitome of HALL OF FAME baseball instinct.
The second Hosmer hesitated on the ground ball, the redirected throw to 2nd went into Molina’s mind. Few even think it, only one could execute it. Unreal.
IF YOU CAN’T PLAY CATCH, YOU CAN’T PLAY.
It is THE most important fundamental skill of the game. Playing catch isn’t something you do to warm up. It is a drill that directly translates to every single game you will ever play. Treat it as such.
#STdrills
LEADERSHIP can be far louder and more impactful when coming from a teammate than it is when coming from a coach. The game will knock us all down. It’s our responsibility to pick one another up, regardless of what our role may be.
Leaders lead.
The hand roll routine is a staple of infielder development. It is the defensive equivalent of a player hitting off the tee. In the same way a hitter gets his swing right, here
@ozzie
gets his hands right before his day on the field gets going.
#Postseason
Backing up is not just about being in position in case someone else misses a ball. It actually allows other fielders to be more aggressive, knowing that you’ll be there if the play isn’t made.
Every player can back up. It’s a decision, not a talent.
Wall Ball is a great reactionary drill for players, especially for catchers & infielders to develop quick hands. Remove the glove and the drill becomes even more challenging... which means more development by the time they actually figure it out.
#STdrills
BUY IN: It's a very simple concept. If you're not all-in, then you are out. It's a concept that applies both individually and collectively.
It’s commitment by actions, not words. It’s everyone pulling the same rope in the same direction, with everything they’ve got.
PLAYERS: one person is in control of your career. It’s not your coach. Not a scout. Not a parent. It’s YOU.
You have complete ownership of where you go on the field. Every day decisions show your level of ownership.
It’s not sometimes and some things.
It’s always and all ways.
The hand roll routine for infielders is one of the best developmental drills out there, isolating specific parts of infield play, as seen here with
@LieutenantDans7
’s forehand & backhand. Working on the knees lets him think only about his hands.
#STdrills
In an age where many feel the need to one up one another to see who is the smartest guy in the room, this is as clear and logical an explanation on the swing and hitting as any hitter needs.
Hitting can be as simple or as complicated as YOU decide to make it.
Watch and listen⬇️
In an era when home runs are dominating our game, professional batting practice isn’t a daddy-hack, HR derby. Instead, hitters work on the things that produce home runs like timing and balance, while swinging under control to barrel the baseball.
#STdrills
COACHES: I promise you, if you don’t allow your players to make mistakes, they will make far more mistakes than if you did.
Giving players the freedom to fail- especially in practice- allows them to play free, and allows YOU to push the envelope to help them get even better.
IF YOU CAN’T PLAY CATCH, YOU CAN’T PLAY.
The ability to throw and catch the ball correctly is THE most important fundamental skill of the game. Pitching and defense are both simple extensions of playing catch. And pitching and defense win games.
#STdrills
KNEE DRILLS allow infielders and outfielders to focus on what their hands are doing. BAREHAND DRILLS force proper glove angle along with heightened focus without the glove on.
If these help Pete Alonso improve defensively, they can help you too.
#STdrills
THE BATTLE AB.
These are the absolute best. Watching a hitter battle a pitcher for TWENTY TWO pitches is the epitome of competition. Mechanics? Out the window. Approach? Out of mind.
One guy versus another.
This may be the most exciting walk of all time:
Blocking is a catcher’s badge of honor. But it’s not just about keeping it in front. It’s just as important to keep it close to recover quickly. With a simple circle, blocking reps can take on a higher level of productivity and competitiveness.
#STdrills
HITTERS: The pitches you take during batting practice are just as important as those you swing at. Disciplined hitters who understand the strike zone & THEIR zone are dangerous hitters. But you have to practice that discipline. There’s no switch.
#STdrills
Why do infielders work on their knees? To isolate their hands.
Things like glove angle (making the glove as big as possible) or glove action (to give with the ball or work thru it) are easier to focus on without the feet involved.
Welcome back,
#STdrills
Our game is hard. Coaches want to trust their players to do some really hard things on the field.
If a coach can’t trust you to do the easy every day stuff off the field- like being on time, dressing properly, going to class- how can he ever trust you to do the hard stuff on it?
DO THIS DRILL if you:
-Want to teach kids how to be athletic
-Want to teach kids timing in hitting
-What to let kids have fun in practice
The best part? Your ONLY coaching cue is this: “hit the ball.”
Development comes in all forms, even those that are a blast for the kids.
Major League infielders are fluid and work thru the ball whenever possible. There’s no stopping to field; they are in constant motion. The feet take the hands thru the ground ball, with the body moving into the throw, going in line to the target.
#STdrills
Hitters are programmed wrong. During slumps, the first thing many look at is the swing, thinking it’s broken. The first thing they SHOULD look at is the pitches they are swinging at.
The swing is built to hit pitches in the strike zone. Few swings work on balls out of the zone.
PLAYING CATCH is the most important fundamental skill of the game. The teams that play catch the best are generally the one's who win the most because they simply take care of the baseball.
#STdrills
When moving aggressively to the ball coming in or going laterally, some infielders lose their footing because they go TOO hard.
“KEEP YOUR FEET UNDER YOU” is a great cue to help then learn how to play under control.
This is exactly what that looks like:
BASERUNNING.
IS.
A.
WEAPON.
...A weapon only if you work on it. Baserunning is far more about details and decisions than it is about being fast. Details like the timing of a secondary lead. Or the technique when taggging up, like we see here.
#STdrills
OUTFIELDERS:
You get behind the ball so you can get through the ball. This is no different than infielders working through a ground ball. The more momentum you have moving through the catch, the more you’ll be able to get on the throw.
#STdrills
“Want to be great? Quit patting yourself on the back.”
I would hire this guy to coach a baseball team even if he didn’t know anything about baseball. Chances are, he’d win.
If you’re not doing something to help your team win, then what are you doing?
The pre-pitch is one of the most underrated parts of infield play. A well timed pre-pitch that gets to the balls of the feet on contact or a millisecond after contact makes for a great jump. This is what getting off the blocks quickly looks like.
#STdrills
