Head Women's Basketball Coach at The College of Saint Rose
GM & Head Coach Albany Patroons 2021-22
Head Coach UAlbany 2001-2021
Head Coach Sullivan CC 1998-2001
I remember when all u needed to get better was a ball and a basket. Sometimes u didn't even need a basket. Now kids need a trainer, have to play inside with air conditioning, & need fancy gear. What happened to just working your butt off & competing against older guys to improve?
Heard a parent and a kid would not take calls from non D1 coaches. When no D1s are calling, u might want to start listening. So many people have no idea how good the basketall is at the D2 and D3 levels. Talented teams, players, & coaches at every level!
Took my older guy to see a good D3 game today RPI vs Ithaca. Two well coached teams with highly skilled players. Young kids have no idea how good D3 ball is and how hard it is to play at that level. Especially in good programs!
Congrats to Josh Speidel and his family! Josh is an inspiration to many. Great job by Coach Becker, UVM, & the state of Vermont. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to witness something very special this evening. It was great to see Josh score his first college basket!
Took my older son to a local D3 game tonight. Wanted him to see and get a feel for the level. Good teams, coaches, and players at all levels. Best way to realize that is to go watch a game at each level. Will give u a better understanding & greater appreciation!
Picked up my 8 year old from his basketball practice tonight and asked him how it went. Told me they learned 2 zone defenses. I started to get the chills when I heard zone defense. He said he liked it cause he didn't have to move as much as he does in man to man. Oh boy!
Watched the NCAA D2 Final Four tonight. High level players and coaching. All 4 teams would be successful in low major & mid major D1 conferences. Not sure how many people really understand how good this level of basketball really is. Important to respect all levels of play!
Good basketball is being played at the NCAA D1, D2, & D3 levels. Really good players and coaches at all 3 levels. Players need to appreciate any recruitment that they receive. Should be all about the right level and not the highest level!

If you can send positive thoughts and prayers our way it would be greatly appreciated. My father in law Larry is fighting for his life. He is a really strong man and a great guy. It would mean so much to the family!π
One of the toughest things about coaching is missed family time. The other night I missed my older sons final game of his high school career. He picked up the game late & has worked hard to play catch up. Really proud of him. He enjoys the game and it is nice to see!
So sad to hear of the passing of Coach Pat Filien. Played against him in college and he was on our staff at Albany for 6 years. Always was upbeat and had a smile on his face. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family!
#RIP
My 2 boys have been out of school a few weeks and doing schoolwork from home. My wife has been great with helping the boys. My dad was an educator. All of this has really opened my eyes and made me realize how undervalued and underappreciated teachers are at all levels!
Many want to be a Head Coach & think running your own program is easy. They have no idea. Moving over 1 seat = no more suggestions, you sink or swim with your decisions. U have to be able to teach, relate, motivate & be a strategist. A results oriented business. Not for everyone!
Had a long talk last night with my older son about the process of getting better 1) U don't need a gym 2) U don't need to be indoors 3) U don't need A/C 4) U don't need a trainer 5) At times u don't even need a basket! What u do need is passion, work ethic & a burning desire!
Got a text from a former player today that made my day. Just a simple thank you for the positive impact that he felt I had on his life. So many life lessons can be taught through basketball, sports, and competition. We as coaches have a responsibility to teach those lessons!
Jackson Brown, son of Will Brown, is in the NCAA transfer portal.
Only staying at UAlbany for one year, though, had been the plan for Jackson Brown. Essentially wanted to use the year as a redshirt year.

Coaching is hard. It isn't for everyone. It can be very rewarding, extremely frustrating & a tremendous challenge. However, most do it for the love of the game & for the opportunity to impact the lives of young people. If you are good to the game it will be good to you!
A lot of work goes into hosting an NCAA Regional. A great job by all involved. Especially the MAAC & Siena. Coach Staley gets it. The Albany area loves basketball and will always embrace these opportunities!
Tough people deal with tough times. Adversity builds character! I have no doubt that our players will continue to compete at a high level & make the most of a difficult situation!
The energy in MVP Arena last night for Iowa/LSU was electric. The Caitlin Clark factor is obvious. The Iowa fanbase travels well. LSU were the defending National Champs. With that being said, Albany supported this NCAA Regional as well as any & deserved to be a host city!
People need to realize guys can really play at all levels. I watched my older son play against St John Fisher & SUNY Poly. Both have scholarship level frontcourts. It is all about fit & opportunity. Don't get consumed with the highest level, worry about being at the right level!
Game day! Season and conference opener. It has been a long 9 months. Proud of how patient and resilient our players have been. Let's all stay healthy and safe!
Just wanted to thank everyone for your outpouring of support in regards to my father in law & his health situation. I usually respond to every message but have received so many today. Appreciate all of you. Your thoughts & prayers mean the world to us. Please keep em coming! π
Congrats to
@CoachJPELLETIER
on his new job at UMBC. Going to a place with great facilities and a strong commitment to basketball. He will do a great job and the players will love him!
One thing I have learned over the years and truly believe is it takes zero talent to be a great teammate. Great teammates are consumed by what is best for the team even if it is not best for them. The willingness to help the team regardless of your role sends a powerful message!
It is so difficult to advance to the NCAA Tournament from a one bid league. It all comes down to the conference tournament. You need to play well, stay healthy & have some luck on your side. If it happens once you need to really enjoy it because no guarantee it will happen again!
Thank you to all who have reached out about win
#300
. Thanks to the current & former players & coaches & support staff. Thanks to the university & athletics admin & staff. Thanks to our great fans, alumni, & corporate sponsors. Thanks to the media. Thanks to family & friends!
I knew the question was coming at the post game press conference. It was a pretty cool feeling to be able to tell my son to go in to the game & to watch him play for a few minutes. Proud dad moment. I know he was nervous. Really appreciate how supporrtive his teammates have been!
Too many lives have been lost of late. Life is so short & precious. Embrace today as tomorrow is not guaranteed. Be grateful for every day that you have with family & friends. Hopefully we all can stay healthy & safe during these tough times!
Been a long 10 hours. Found out we were in the NCAA Tourney & who we were playing at 11pm last night. Got home at 12:30am & watched film til 3:30. Power nap til 5:30, pickleball 6-8, getting ready to watch more film. Running on fumes! Fun time of year!
Congrats to
@brianbeaury
on one helluva coaching career as the Head Coach at The College of Saint Rose. As good as any coach in the country. Had a major impact on so many people. Gave me my first opportunity in the business.
#ForeverGrateful
Proud of our team, players & staff. Represented Saint Rose well. Tough loss in the NCAA Tourney today to a good team, who had a dynamic pg, who is the 2nd leading scorer in the nation. We guarded as we always do. Held them to 32% shooting. We had opportunities!
#GreatSeason
Several people have asked me why we are playing Cuse, Vermont & scrimmaging a D1 program as well. As we build the program I want our players & recruits to know that they will be challenged, will play against the best & will get better as a result. Another big challenge today!
Was great having Notre Dame practice at our facility today. Talented and focused group. They couldn't have been any nicer. Good luck to the Fighting Irish!
Too many people have no idea how good the non D1 levels really are. Good players & coaches at all levels. It is hard to play at any level of college basketball. Even harder to make an impact. Good idea to learn about D2, D3, NAIA, JC & USCCA. Just appreciate good basketball!
Thanks so much. It is an honor to receive this award. Jamie & I have taken great pride in working with ACS & Coaches vs Cancer. A big thank you to Anthony Marino & Lizzie Hunter. My wife has been awesone in the fight against cancer. Let's continue to raise $ & awareness
#Albany
Outstanding talent, tremendous coaching and passionate fans. The MVP Arena staff, The MAAC, Siena College & the city of Albany did a great job hosting the event. Also, the local & national media coverage was big time. A win for the game of basketball!
So awesome to see
@CoachWB33
there all weekend. Coach Brown, you showed up for the womenβs game all year taking over St. Rose and then supporting this weekend. Youβve coach in the menβs tournament 5 times. What was your take on the hoop you saw this weekend???
Had an international kid who I recruited in the Fall of 2018 reach out recently asking if I could help him find a school. Had not spoken with him in nearly 3 years. Within 3 or 4 days I got him situated with a D1 JUCO. He just happens to be 7' 250. Happy for the young man!
Tomorrow is our older guys 18th Birthday. Today we decided to go for a short ride to Chicopee, MA so he can get some food from one of his favorite spots that we don't have in Albany!
Good to hear that high school winter sport athletes in New York State will have the opportunity to play this season. No doubt it can be done safely. Glad that graduating seniors will be able to compete and finish their high school careers with their teammates. Enjoy & stay safe!
Always tough when a season comes to an end but really excited about this young core moving forward. Alot of hard work ahead of us but the future is extremely bright!
Caitlin Clark in the Albany Regional at the MVP Arena! People will be fighting for tickets. Also, the
#1
overall seed South Carolina will be playing in Albany!
Was at a high school game last night and a coach was sitting in front of me with a pen and a legal pad live scouting. By the end of the game he had pages of notes. Was refreshing to see. Love guys that put in the work for the betterment of the kids and the program!
Expecting today to be a very difficult day as we leave our older guy at college. My wife and younger son will be a mess. Will hit me hard. Won't be easy. Not looking forward to the ride home. Going to miss him!
Happy Birthday to my wife
@BrownJamie23
who is a wonderful mother to our 2 boys and a great wife. Never easy being the wife of a coach but she is a pro and and has done a masterful job!
#VeryThankful
I love it when someone tells me "he has D2 offers but he is a D1 player". If u are only being recruited at a certain level that probably means u belong at that level. And nothing is wrong with that. U are fortunate if u can go to school for free! Shouldn't be all about D1!
The worst thing a coach can do is point the finger when his team is struggling. The best thing he can do is look in the mirror & figure out what he can do to make it better. Start with how you can "adapt & adjust" to improve the situation. Accountability & responsibility!
Just had a player walk into my office with a big smile on her face, excited to tell me about her visit yesterday & her commitment. Our players dealt with so much adversity this year with the school closing. Finding a new school is a giant weight off her back. Next chapter!
A big thank you to my wife
@BrownJamie23
who takes the losses as hard as I do. My biggest fan & always there for me. Was fun having our 2 boys on the bench with me throughout the season & during this run!
Appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers for my father in law. Have been amazed at how many people have reached out. He is still fighting. Another surgery tomorrow. Thank you to all who have found the time to think about him and the family!
Took this pic for
@BrownJamie23
since it was the first workout of his college career. Her first born survived day 1 and was not tossed by his coach. Let's see how day 2 goes tomorrow!
#Family
Unbelievable win tonight. We struggled mightily offensively & Payton Graber hits a 3/4 court shot at the buzzer to force OT! We did a great job in OT. Tough & resilient group. They deserve success. Finish the regular season 21-5!
NCAA D1 basketball starts today, not college basketball. Let's not forget about all of the levels & affiliations that make up college basketball. Some really good coaches, players, and programs at all levels who have already started the 20-21 season.. Stay healthy & safe!
Not the way we wanted it to end but our guys battled tonight. We had plenty of opportunities. Thank you to our seniors Ahmad, Kendall, Romani, Sasha, Nick, & John (manager). Thanks to our fans as well!
Just had a kid at camp tell me he was tired and wanted to know if his team could play some zone D so they could rest. I smiled and told him to guard hard and rest on offense. He said he preferred to rest on defense. LOL.
Congrats to Cameron Healy for scoring 41 points and breaking the school record. Good things happen to people who work hard. Cameron puts in the work and deserves success!
A big thank you to our fans and the local community for embracing the
@PatroonsAlbany
this season. Especially during the playoff run. I really appreciate it and I know the organization does as well!
Just about 24 hours before the season opener. Anxious to learn some more about our team. Really good and talented opponent on the road. Nothing better than college hoops season!
Watch Kevin Huerter closely. Check out his multiple efforts on this defensive possession. Won't show up in a box score but he is impacting winning on this possession!

We finished the regular season ranked
#1
in the nation in scoring defense 47.1ppg,
#1
in the nation in FG% defense 31.7% &
#8
in the nation in rebounding margin +9.7. This group knows exactly who they are & they take great pride in it. Tough teams are tough to beat!
So many want the title of HEAD COACH but don't want to do the work or don't understand the work that is required. It comes with tremendous responsibility. It can be very challenging but yet very rewarding. It isn't for everyone!
I must say, my wife did a pretty good job with these tickets. Cannot get any closer to the court and players.
@usopen
Looking forward to watching Djokovic play tonight!
I would think at my age I should be able to help my 8 year old with his math homework. Was a struggle tonight. Had to search google for some info. Tried to act cool while searching but he knew I was clueless!
Congrats to UVM on a great effort today and a terrific season! Kudos to Ernie Duncan for sharing his story/journey. Will have a have a positive impact on so many others!
Proud of our team. Dealt with a lot of adversity this week. We go on the road and hold our opponent to 30 points. Our players were focused and punched adversity right in the mouth. We plan on controlling this narrative as best we can!
Gonzaga/UCLA was the best game of the tournament. Not even close. UCLA played so well and executed time after time. Gonzaga just too good and a little luck never hurts!
A good win for us today to finish the regular season. So many challenges for our guys this year. Proud of the team as they have stayed positive & have not complained. They are embracing the opportunity to play this great game. Time for the conference tournament!
#Focus
#Prepare
Every player is doing the required team and individual workouts. The players that do more, put in extra work, that go above and beyond, are the ones separating themselves from the rest!
#EmbraceWork
Proud of our guys. We did not play well but we hung around & executed well in the final minute to steal one on the road. Exactly why you keep playing & keep fighting! Thank you to the UAlbany fans who came to the game, cheered loudly, & helped us find a way! Happy New Year!
Congrats to our players, staff, athletic department & school. What this team has done is so impressive. Picked 11th out of 12 in the NE 10 Conference preseason poll. They have worked really hard, have been so consistent & were rewarded tonight for their body of work!
College coaches are recruiting in this order 1) Transfer Portal 2) Junior College 3) Prep School 4) High School. It is not good to be young at the college level. Get old & stay old. Roster management is a full time job. Roster will change every year. Talent & experience crucial!
