City by city, community by community, we're building a more welcoming UK for people seeking sanctuary. Wherever you live or work there are ways to get involved.
➡️Our response to tonight's coverage by GB news
1. We are incredibly proud of the 400+ inspiring schools that have earned the Schools of Sanctuary award for demonstrating their commitment to being a place of welcome, safety and belonging for all.
Hi
@RobertJenrick
,
All children deserve to feel welcome & safe.
That's why these children have been drawing pictures to send to detention centres to replace the ones that you ordered to be painted over.
We do not stand for your cruelty. We stand
#TogetherWithRefugees
always.
📢The House of Lords have REJECTED the
#AntiRefugeeBill
clause that criminalises refugees who arrive by irregular routes📢
This is HUGE. This result is down to the thousands of ordinary people who stood up for compassion.
Now we must keep up the pressure on MPs.
LOVE WINS.
The King stands with refugees👑
Last night something special happened - our team were invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the King.
In light of this government's hostility, invites like this feel hopeful - we'll keep fighting for a world where refugees are welcomed everywhere.
This is what strength looks like.
After fleeing Afghanistan, these four are now in living in Chester & attend a School of Sanctuary.
They just wrote poems to raise awareness about Afghanistan, womens rights & their new lives here in the UK. You'll want to read them....
We have EXTREMELY exciting news🎓
The
@OpenUniversity
has applied for recognition as a University of Sanctuary
@UniofSanctuary
- this means they've pledged to offer welcome & safety to those forced to flee.
These are their real term commitments:
1/3🧵
This is what we needed to see this morning 🧡🥲
After learning about why people are forced to flee their homes, this school in Birmingham made messages of welcome.
Welcome wins.
Kindness wins.
Love wins.
Keep going everyone.
UK immigration policy is scary.
We say it’s high time for a kinder, fairer and more effective approach to supporting refugees in the UK.
This halloween, and every other day of the year, we stand
#TogetherWithRefugees
🎃

If you share our vision for a culture of kindness, understanding and humanity in the UK, please donate to support our work with schools.
Thank you🙏
My name is Ammie, I am seeking sanctuary but banned from working.
While I wait for a decision on my asylum case, I have to live off £40.85 p/week to cover my food, travel, toiletries, clothes & phone data so I can call my family.
But everything is so expensive now.

After fleeing Afghanistan, Naimat and his family have been given a very warm welcome in Hove 🧡
“We have a feeling of a home, our neighbours brought us sweets & cookies which we really loved.”
Kindness wins.
Incredible things happen when communities make

We're just going to leave this here...
Hmmm, almost feels like maybe there is absolutely no crisis whatsoever....
Except, perhaps, just a crisis of compassion🚨
2. The Schools of Sanctuary programme encourages schools to truly live our shared values of compassion, tolerance and respect, helping children to hear the stories of those who have been forced to flee and - whatever your opinion - always lead with kindness and humanity.
4. The Schools of Sanctuary programme meets these schools where they are, helping them to understand the challenges refugee children might be experiencing and support them to thrive.
Every child deserves to feel safe, welcomed and supported in school.
3. With recent global events, vulnerable children who have been forced to flee have joined schools across the UK, many of which may have never welcomed a refugee child before.
We are building a more welcoming UK💪
It has been a truly incredible day so far, from football coaches to teachers, councillors to campaigners, our remarkable networks are doing everything possible to to speak up & stand up for people speaking sanctuary
#speakupforsanctuary
Our small team is struggling to focus. We can't stop thinking about the men who are facing removal to Rwanda tonight - a country they have no connect to. How terrified they must be. After surviving unimaginable horrors, they now face this. How brutal they must think we all are.
A shameful day for the UK. The
#AntiRefugee
bill has passed.
This cruel bill will cause catastrophic human harm. Our thoughts are with the people who will be affected. We are with you.
We will fight this with everything we have.
Together we are strong. This is not over.
This is my second Christmas in the UK & the first I'm looking forward to 🎄
This year I am happy. I am happy because I no longer have nightmares about crossing the sea, forests & borders.
I'm happy because I finally feel safe.
THREAD 1/4
Bradford is a proud City of Sanctuary.
Bradford Council just passed a motion to oppose the new anti-refugee laws. This is HUGE.
Bradford are an awarded Local Authority of Sanctuary - and THIS is what it's all about.
“Bradford stands against the anti-refugee laws and with refugees. Refugees are welcome here!”
Amazing & moving to hear passionate speeches from local leaders tonight as Bradford Council passed a motion pledging to fight the
#AntiRefugeeLaws
#CityofSanctuary
👏👏👏
Happy Refugee Week!☀️
If you're bored of scapegoating & hostility, join us & help make welcome widespread!
Our networks of community groups, schools, unis, councils & more all support, empower & welcome people seeking sanctuary💪😍
#refugeeweek2023
This is HUGE news. The Welsh Parliament has REJECTED the
#AntiRefugeeBill
.
"The UK Govt, through this Bill, would fundamentally & grotesquely undermine Wales' history of welcome & our aspiration to be a Nation of Sanctuary"
@Sioned_W
This Bill is cruel & unfair. Wales says no.
Some of the people held in the appalling conditions of Manston have now been moved to Birmingham.
This School of Sanctuary is ready to welcome them to their city.
Read this welcome letter written by one of the children in Year 3 - and try not to cry...
A victory for compassion and common sense!
The Supreme Court has ruled that the cruel Rwanda sceheme WILL NOT GO AHEAD.
They've confirmed what we knew all along: that the plan was brutal, unfair & illegal.
Tomorrow our Gov plans to send refugees to Rwanda.
They're being shipped to a place where they have no connection, no family/friends, with a proven poor human rights record.
It shouldn't be necessary to explain why this is a horrible idea. It's obvious.
Here's what you can do:
Sala was forced to flee her home in Sudan when she was just a child, now she's saving lives as a surgeon in Ealing.
“For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a doctor. Growing up in Sudan made me to want to help people."
Everyone wins when communities make
#RefugeesWelcome
People fleeing Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria & more should be welcomed. But instead this Government wants to criminalise, detain & deport refugees🤔
The House of Lords rejected these plans – now MPs must do the same💪
Call on your MP to be on the side of humanity, not hostilty.
We can't be the only ones having a little cry at last night's beautiful scenes in
#Glasgow
, right?
Watch as
@walkwithamal
drifts off to sleep as she is sung a lullaby, surrounded by lamps held by local children. 💕🥲
"My wife is all I've got. Please don't take her away from me."
This is written by a husband who's wife is facing deportation - they're just one of the families in the asylum system living with this threat.
Every day the current hostile system tears up love stories.
Hey
@TrussLiz
👋 We know that your Rwanda plan is wrong. Plain & simple.
From community groups, schools & unis to councils, faith orgs & arts orgs, our networks know refugees deserve protection not punishment.
Stop the flights,

This small act of kindness had a HUGE impact ⛸️❤️
The ice rink in
#Lancaster
donated free places to local refugee families.
Treats like this are usually well out of reach for most people in the asylum system.
It was magical & made many children very very happy.
Thank you!👏🧡
We're not crying you're crying 🥹
These children from
@StMaryB17
in Birmingham are standing in solidarity with refugees.
Imagine the world we'd live in if everyone was a little more like this kids...
Humanity before nationality.
Today is
#InternationalMigrantsDay

Throughout history, migration has been a courageous way to overcome adversity & to live a better life. Whether its to escape fear, be with loved ones, study or follow a dream - migration is part of our DNA.

Ammie is one of our Sanctuary Ambassadors👆
The cost of living emergency is hitting people in the asylum system incredibly hard.
With costs skyrocketing, £5.84p/day simply isn’t enough to get by.
🚨We’re calling on the government to urgently raise levels of asylum support🚨
📢All together now: Refugees are NOT a threat. Seeking asylum is NOT a crime.
Once more for those at the back: Refugees are NOT a threat. Seeking asylum is NOT a crime!
#RefugeesWelcome
#TogetherWithRefugees
We are devastated - and yet we are not surprised.
People seeking sanctuary deserve to live in our communities as our neighbours, not warehoused in dangerous barges.
After yesterday’s bleakness - here’s some AMAZING news. This incredible lot have just graduated from our Sanctuary in Politics course - advocates, campaigners, activists, future leaders. Watch this space for great great things 🎊🥳💪✊
What a dark day. Our thoughts are with the many Ukrainians who will be fearing for their lives, their families, their homes, their futures.
We must treat those who are forced to flee as we would want to be treated - with understanding & compassion. The UK must provide sanctuary.
My name is Kushinga. As a former asylum seeker, I have lived through the fear of deportation.
The policy of sending people to Rwanda is cruel & evil.
The Rwandan Govt has said it can only take 200 people at a cost of £120m... That's a bad deal in every sense.

My name is Niloha. This year I’ll be celebrating with my friends & family. But it wasn’t always like this.
I was forced to leave my home in Venezuela & my life as a doctor.
I’m now a
#CityofSanctuary
ambassador, working to ensure that every newcomer is met with empathy.

Give the
#RefugeeBanBill
the red card🟥
A reminder: this law will ban anyone crossing the Channel in a small boat from claiming asylum. It is essentially a ban on the human right to seek asylum.
Only together can we stop this.
RT & tag your MP👇
When you look at the facts, it's clear there is no 'refugee crisis', just a crisis of compassion.
The numbers of people applying for asylum in the UK have actually dropped in the last twenty years...📉
1/2
This is big. The courts have just confirmed what we’ve all known.
When someone risks their life crossing the channel, they are not “illegal”. Crossing a border to seek asylum is never illegal.
“Intercepted migrants crossing the Channel in small boats will no longer be deemed ‘illegal entrants’ but ‘arriving passengers’”
Great to see this coverage in the Telegraph - we hope all their readers take note.
“The football has come home, and so have I”
Hamada has been granted leave to remain, that means after 5 years of fear & instability he is finally free to rebuild his life🧡😍
Hamada is one of our incredible Sanctuary Ambassadors. We're DELIGHTED that at last, he is safe.
Introducing our team!😍
This fab lot pack a punch.
Together we support & coordinate 130+ regional groups whilst working with hundreds of schools, unis, councils & more to foster solidarity-based approached.
We’re proud as punch of our little Sanctuary family.
Everyone deserves to live in safety, no matter who they are or where they come from.
The violence directed towards a hotel housing newly arrived people seeking sanctuary in Knowsley on Friday does not represent us.
We know firsthand that the UK is a place of welcome.

Oxford Uni stands in solidarity with people seeking sanctuary💪
@UniofOxford
is now a University of Sanctuary!💃
This is the UK's first collegiate uni to get the award - meaning all 34 colleges have been working to ensure people seeking sanctuary are supported & welcomed.

We absolutely love this.
This special blue plaque is soon to be installed on Tooting Market, dedicated to the contribution of migrants in the local area.
When communities open their hearts, minds and doors - everyone benefits.
Huge thanks to

BREAKING NEWS: The cruel Rwanda plan is UNLAWFUL🚨
We the people do not stand for this cruelty. People seeking sanctuary deserve protection, not punishment.
The Lords have again ripped the
#AntiRefugeeBill
apart.
No one seeking sanctuary should be criminalised, detained & deported - but that's what this gov has planned.
The Lords know it’s wrong, the people know it’s wrong. Now it's over to our MPs...
Spotted in Sheffield - a sonnet for the city.
This is staggeringly beautiful, read all of it.
In 2007, Sheffield became the UK’s first ever City of Sanctuary - a city that takes pride in the welcome it offers to people in need of safety.
This school just did something INCREDIBLE!😍
They are the first school in Pembrokeshire to achieve a School of Sanctuary award.
“We know that our school is enriched by new arrivals. We support learners from all backgrounds so that they feel welcome, supported & included"

Happy Birthday to all those given this date by the Home Office as their date of birth. Welcome! May you find peace, sanctuary, dignity & respect for your new life in the UK. We celebrate your contributions & stand in solidarity with your rights. We wish you a happy new year.
Trans rights are human rights.
On

Congratulations to the UK's first women’s Football Club of Sanctuary!
@HolbeckMoorFC
have worked hard to be welcoming to all women, especially those in the asylum system. They offer free football sessions & support to players with kit, travel & a creche.
AMAZING WORK!👏👏👏
Anti-refugee policies are destroying lives.
We are proud to have joined forces with 110+ orgs to call on
@SuellaBraverman
to urgently:
🚨Sort out the backlog
🚨Create safe routes
🚨Respect intl law
🚨Give people a fair hearing, however they get here
I'm not crying, you are... These primary school kids have made
#ValentinesDay
cards to show support for refugees 🤗
This is all about urging their MP to support amendments to the

.
This year do something matters, write to your MP👇👇
My name is Alice. To me, sanctuary is a place where I feel safe, nurtured & protected.
Sometimes a feeling of welcome can come from something simple, someone saying hello, how're you?
Everyone seeking sanctuary deserves a safe place where they feel they belong & can thrive.

We are devastated by the disaster in Turkey & Syria.
Our solidarity goes to everyone affected & those now working to save lives.
Our little team, which has both Turkish & Syrian members, has been rocked by the last 24 hours - this is how we're trying to help...

My name is Kushinga. The passing of the Nationality & Borders Bill proves yet again that this country is run by a gov with no regard for human life.
Some lives matter more than others. I am heartbroken, disappointed & disgusted. I feel disheartened & on the verge of tears.

It’s conference time! City of Sanctuary groups from all across the UK have come together today to discuss resilience, movement building & the importance of welcome!🥳

Hatred doesnt need any more airtime. Show your support for compassion & donate to support our work:
The Nationality & Borders bill is cruel. It will criminalise people just for seeking safety on these shores.
62% of the public believe the UK should welcome refugees - it's time this govt listened.
Today the House of Lords must vote to

. Share if you agree.
"I am safe now I am in the UK, but am I really living? Surviving on £40.85 a week isn’t a life.
Let me work, let me study, but until then, let me live."
The cost of living crisis is affecting us all, but it's battering those in the asylum system.
Rwanda's opposition leader tears the Rwanda scheme apart:
"It's unacceptable that a rich democratic country sends refugees to a poor non-democratic country. The UK is the head of the Commonwealth. It's betraying the values that they pledge to everywhere."
Communities from across the UK are preparing their orange hearts representing compassion for people fleeing war & persecution. Inspired by the refugee nation flag, & the colours of a lifebelt, the heart symbolises hope and kindness. Look out & join in

gave UNANIMOUS support to becoming a recognised city of sanctuary! 🧡
We're thrilled to see our work paying off. A massive thanks to

for bringing the motion forward! 🙌
Maggie has some HUGE news.
We've now engaged with 100+ local authorities - that's 1/3 of all LA in the UK.
Our Local Authority network is a movement of councils who are working to create a culture of welcome, inclusion & empowerment for people seeking sanctuary.
