Why when we talk about women in computer science do we often only mention Ava Lovelace or Grace Hopper? Both amazing, but there are so many inspirational women in computer science. These are some of the women that have inspired me. (A thread - not an exhaustive list)
I've been chatting to some colleagues about student engagement in the blended classroom. There are some understandable worries about participation in online engagements. So I thought I would throw together this thread with some thoughts, advice, and tips. [thread]
Excited to announce that I will be joining
@StaffsUni
as Professor of Digital Innovation, and head of the Games Design & Technology department. Looking forward to the new role, & can't wait to meet my new colleagues.
My family thought it was a good justification for fudge :)
Bit more traumatic than we were expecting, but a successfully result.
Friends, meet my beautiful son.

Mummy doing very well, and baby already having his first snack.
I’m honoured and humbled to have been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from
@AdvanceHE
thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way, and huge congratulations to the other

Just found out that my book proposal “Engaging Students in Online Learning: A Practical Guide for Higher Education” has been accepted, just need to sign the contract. Big thanks to
@ProfSallyBrown
and
@mdleast
for the early encouragement. This is my happy face!
Some ideas for online icebreakers (Teams Calls, Zoom etc).
1) "Post a GIF Response" Ask students a question that can be answered with a GIF. For example "Post a GIF that describes your hopes and dreams" - Really fun way to enable a little creativity and humour. [1/n]
They said it couldn’t be done! My team and I are proud to present “CVS” or the Chocolate Value Spectrum. All Christmas chocolates ranked from best (malteser) to worst (decker). I would like to thank the confectionery research council for their support.

End of an era / last day at Lincoln before formally taking up my new post at Staffs. Lincoln has been such a wonderful university to work at, and I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had here. It’s a really special community full of fantastic people.
Thanks all.
Hi everyone, thank you for all the well wishes. Wanted to just update to say we are home recovering and walked away surprisingly lucky.
Boys and wife are all ok. River was on the same side as me and has some injuries (bruises, belt rash etc), but he’s being typically stoic about
Not the best start to Easter. The family and I were involved in a head on crash over the Woodhead pass. Caused by a distracted driver who didn’t check her mirror before pulling out into the side of us.
By Stuck in hospital for a while. Going to be off socials while we recover.
Tomorrow is my first day in my new role. Looking forward to getting settled into the new role, and getting to work with this awesome team who have already been so welcoming.

A thread of threads. Going to create a super thread of all my teaching tips and videos to keep them all in one place. I’ll keep updating this over time. [1/n]
Super pleased to announce the programme for
#PracticalPedagogy1
. There will be three streams of talks for a full day of practical pedagogy.
Please share with your colleagues and institutions. It is going to be great!

Just had a really useful brainstorming session on my whiteboard about socially distanced pastoral care - had a few ideas. Would this be useful for anyone else if I put it into a tweet thread?
Pastoral Care in the digital classroom. I've been thinking a lot about how we support the learning community, and how we develop/deploy pastoral activities into the online space. I did some whiteboarding earlier and thought I'd share some thoughts and ideas I've had [thread]
Building Simple Games in
#MicrosoftForms
[thread]
Games can be a great way to engage students, and there are loads of ways to play games in a face to face session. However, with the shift to online/blended learning, we need some new approaches. This is one in MSForms [1/11]
Wohoo!
@StaffsUni
winners of the “Best Educational Initiative” award for our “StaffsVerse” and 1UP scheme initiatives. Super proud of this amazing team I get to work with every day!

Sooo... as it’s likely that I will be doing more video content in the future I thought I’d do some small upgrades to my home filming/streaming rig. [thread]
Really happy to announce to my Twitter colleagues that I have assumed a new role at Lincoln, and starting today I will be the new Director of Teaching and Learning at
@UoLCompSci
I'm excited for the new challenges and opportunities ahead. Working with an amazing team.
Thinking of running a one day online conference this summer "Practical Pedagogy" Similar to
@pedPancakes
with talks on practical TnL advice. Reply if interested in attending of being involved. Thinking of doing a book or special issue out of the submissions too.
Thoughts?
Super impressed to see sign language interpreters at
@StaffsUni
graduation. I've been to a lot of graduations and it's the first time I've seen this. What a considerate approach towards inclusion.
Hi all, going to be a bit quiet on here for a bit. Baby seems VERY determined to meet us earlier than we expected. So currently in the hospital waiting for our family to gain a new member. Feeling an odd mix of glee, adrenaline, and nerves

Dyslexia and Inclusive Online Education (A Thread).
To start this one off I want to stress that much of this is from my experience. I'm dyslexic. However, dyslexia is a broad spectrum. Not every dyslexic student will be like me, and I am not like every dyslexic student. [1/n]
To end the year, here are some of my favourite teaching tips. From planning, delivery, assessment, and pastoral care. These are written largely from a perspective of engagement, inclusion, and compassion. Recognising that all students are on different journeys. [thread]
For this reason, asynchronous content is super important. Record sessions, direct people to alternate sources, book chapters (the OG asynchronous), YouTube videos, PodCasts, Collaborative notes or even Talis Elevate resources. Give students every chance to stay engaged. (5/25)
Very exited to be at daddy’s work today… which he refers to as “nursery for big boys and girls” which is quite sweet. First day at his new nursery soon… really excited for him to start at

nursery
Lovely surprise came through the post today from
@unilincoln
. 2020 was slap bang in the middle of the pandemic, and I was really pleased with what we managed to pull together as a team.
Games Development department (first year and foundation) at

. We certainly draw a crowd in welcome week as one of the largest games departments in the world. Course director Greg giving the Design talk.

Practical Pedagogy Conference - Monday 13th of September.
As part of Pedagogy and Pancakes we will be hosting a conference on "practical pedagogy". A day-long session of advice, tips and tricks that can be applied directly into your practice [Thread]
Margaret Hamilton coined the term "software engineering" while working on Apollo. Computer Scientists... think of how often you use the term "Software Engineering" every day!
Honestly, I’ve never seen much difference in attendance. Most of the “evidence” for drops in attendance are anecdotal.
Imho - if students aren’t turning up, there are bigger issues with your delivery than lecture recording.
Moments like this you just feel like the luckiest person in the world. Tristan has such love for his little brother. He’s a really bouncy boy, but always so so gentle with River. Proud dad ♥️
Roberto’s… I will be coming here again. Best pizza I’ve had outside of NYC. Really nice little place with super friendly staff. What a gem in the middle of the city
At one of the inaugural events in the Catalyst
@StaffsUni
- and the VC is sat here with a young-un. Maybe it’s a small thing? I don’t know. But it’s a positive message about what the culture of Staffs aspires to be. As a young dad, it’s important. What a wonderful place to work.
I've always found the story of the ENIAC Six hugely inspirational. Jean Bartik, Betty Holberton, Kathleen Antonelli, Marlyn Meltzer, Frances Spence, and Ruth Teitelbaum are names that every computer scientist should know off by heart. They are the pioneers of software!!
End of the day in my new role, and thought I would share my experience.
Most of my friends and close colleagues know that I've had my eye on Staffordshire University for a few years. Seeing the institutional commitment towards games has been inspiring! [thread]
[Face to Face Apprehension Thread]
After 18 months teaching online I recently taught my first face to face "large" lecture as part of the
@UniofLincolnSWC
WOW summer school. Honestly, I had forgotten how much I loved delivering an in-person session. But it made me think [1/20]
Firstly, remember that the online space is very different from the physical, and there are many reasons why a student may be struggling to participate... 👏THIS 👏DOES 👏NOT 👏MEAN 👏THEY 👏ARE 👏DISENGAGED. (2/25)
As part of the book I'm writing "Engaging Students in Online Learning: A Practical Guide for HE", I'm looking to include a number of case studies/vignettes from outside my context. Anyone be interested in sharing something?
pls RT
I've been writing "bare with me" instead of "bear with me" for years.... apparently the later is correct, and the former means "let's get nude". Just been corrected in an email.
... There are times that my dyslexia doesn't bother me. And times when it is worryingly embarrassing
As there is a shortage of yeast, I thought I'd share with you my Soda Bread recipe (no yeast)
You will need
- 300g flour
- teaspoon of baking soda
- 200ml milk
- teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar
- teaspoon of salt
- tablespoon of melted butter

We live-stream every week and the first four episodes are available on your YouTube site.
A year ago I found this lovely photo of my wife as a kid with her grandads dog. I put it on the shelf as it makes me smile, I can see so much of her in Tristan, and there makes me happy.
… today she told me that it’s “just the picture that comes in the frame”

So excited to announce that the first version of the Lincoln Island project has now been published! We have loads of extra stuff to go into the next version. But if you would like to play the early release it can be downloaded from the Microsoft store.
Super excited to announce that I'll be joining the
@SAGE_Publishing
Pedagogy Advisory Board (PAB). Even more exciting I'll be working alongside my long-time twitter buddy
@DrWGarnham
:-p Really excited to undertake this new role.
Think for a second how amazing this is. They devised methods and paradigms to write complex software without any guidance. They worked out how to write programmes with nothing but wiring diagrams to work with! It's mind blowing!
So tired... Just ended a telephone call with a collaborator with "love you, bye!"....
1) apologised quickly
2) hoping other collaborators wont be offended if I don't say I love you to them.
3) looking forward to a full nights sleep
Having COVID run rampant through society would do more economic harm than a (relatively) short lockdown, and some target local restrictions. You callous self-centred goblin.
We all have to die sooner or later. If I get Covid and cop it, so be it. My time has come. I'll have had a good life, better than most in this world at any rate. I certainly don't expect the entire nation to bankrupt itself to save my sorry ass.
People talk about pedagogic innovation like it’s a magic bullet that’s going to solve all education problems… it isn’t!
It’s also not a light switch you can just turn on and off on demand.
[A Rant Thread]
I'm up and moving today. I'm still walking with my cane, but making good progress and things don't hurt as much. I hope to pop into the office to pick up some things today. The boys are still a bit traumatised (which comes out in unusual ways), but they are really proving how
Today I discovered that I had left a cheese sandwich, some pasta, and a strawberry yogurt in my fridge 7 months ago....
.... fortunately I was already wearing a mask 😷
Love the excellent forest school at
@StaffsUni
, it was Tristan’s first day today. He left super excited to go back. What an excellent building, and what a great addition to the campus.

Students of Lincoln - I'm currently working on a project to build a virtual campus in a video game called "Lincoln Island" where I have re-imagined the Brayford campus as a fantasy pirate island. But its currently very quiet on Lincoln Island and I need your help to fix that!
Ice breaker exercises can be a great way to promote participation. One fun one I use is asking participants to post a GIF in answer to a question, something abstract like "what are your hopes and dreams". It's a good, fun way to get people to focus on the session (16/25)
At the midwife appointment.
Midwife “Would you describe your son as white British?”
Me “I prefer peachy European”
Midwife (exasperated) “that’s not an option”
Don’t confuse online engagement with logging in: when assessing engagement, the sector defaults to the crude measurement of attendance, which is flawed, says

The best use of breakout rooms I have seen is as a separately timetabled pre-session activity. Flipping the learning, and getting the students to bring ideas for discussion. This was then brought together during the main session. (15/25)
