Likely unpopular opinion on #EconTwitter : Econ PhD programs should require one semester covering the history of economic thought. Some space to exclusively cover ideas💡 Maybe review every Nobel prize? Maybe half a semester with easy readings like "The Worldly Philosophers"?

First paper I ever read and it blew my mind as an undergrad in Chile. Simple model of behavior and empirical strategy to then produce relevant policy insight : hooked day one and I am sure 1000s in econ today share a similar experience. Research can be powerful like that.

Now that a lot of top universities will have most, if not all classes developed and prepared for online distribution, what is stopping them from giving access to students from developing countries as MIT and a few others have done with a subset of classes already?

Feels good to get the R&R, but you need to celebrate submissions more IMO. When you finish a paper and feel proud when you submit it - that is the biggest milestone worth celebrating. The rest is external - up to others opinions, luck, and who knows when it will be in print.

OECD analysis shows Chile has the highest social mobility (relative) among member countries - right around the same level as Denmark. Makes sense given progress in education + this measure uses top and bottom 25%. I bet top and bottom 5% might look a lot different.

@florianederer The "not causal, but will make a big stir because people will interpret as causal" is my least favorite type of paper.

In the US: I can't mention my name+I'm from Chile without having to explain the entire history of European influence in Chile to justify my existence. Why you no more gringo? In Chile: No one has ever bothered to say my name and just call me "El Gringo"

What's the biggest problem you have with your name? My biggest problem? Me: "Hi, I'm Marcus. Nice to meet you." Business people: "Hi, Marcus. Do you go by Mark?" Me: "No. If I did then don't you think I'd introduce myself as that?"

@MN_Econ Math helps and is necessary, especially to get into PhDs. However in the long run the econ intuition built over time will serve as a motor for creativity and will help relate econ ideas and concepts in original ways. Not a waste of time!

I was lucky enough to present a paper at #NBERSI ED (w/ @Claudiallende and Francisco Gallego). A lot of people paid attention to me for 50min which is very nice/scary. Behind the scenes, our group is big and a shout out is appropiate: @MohitK_ @alvcarril @seb_otero @JPAL_LAC

“Peru and Chile have very large rainy day funds which give them an incredible flexibility to weather this shock ... ” Peru "has unveiled a stimulus package that equals about 12% of its gross domestic product, the biggest in all of the Americas."

Do you ever go on @coursera and just want to learn everything? I did a whole bunch of CS stuff on my last leave in 2017 and I am looking forward to piling on my next leave. Any suggestions of well constructed classes in the CS/AI genre? I chug that tech KoolAid!

Wondering what this years NBER Summer Institute “memorabilia” will be? An NBER mug? An NBER umbrella? A branded koozie for wonky summer pool parties? I have no idea what it will be, but these boxes are piled up outside my NBER office and they look suspicious. #EconTwitter #nber
