In 2020 to question & seek removal of public statues is ok. But a small group deciding they can destroy & deface them is not. Churchill worked with Clement Attlee to stop Hitler's Nazis. Defacing this statue is an insult and does nothing to tackle racism today.
The Letwin Amendment was a result of the Benn Act not expecting a UK/EU WA Deal back today thereby triggering an extension to 31 Jan. This was a panic measure to reinsert the 3 month delay for one reason only to thwart a deal.The public want an orderly Brexit this doesn’t help.
We’re going to hear the Corbynistas blame it on Brexit and the Labour Uber Remainers blaming Corbyn. Both are to blame for what looks like a terrible night for Labour. Both have taken for granted Labour’s heartlands. Sorry we couldn’t offer you a Labour Party you could trust.
Labour in danger of overturning an election promise to respect the 2016 Referendum result. We can’t ignore millions of Labour Leave voters. There are Labour MPs like me who will not support a second ref.
@jeremycorbyn
give us a free vote so Labour MPs can keep their promises
Not worthy of you. But a good example of the elitist attitudes & insults metered out by those who want to stop Brexit. My conviction is that I respect democracy and a deal is preferable to no deal. There’s no career advantage in this. Shame on you.

Sadly she’s become a tame delegate..her local voters will turn when consequences of this Brexit deal are realised. In the end MPs who stand by their convictions are rewarded and respected.
Labour cannot simply be a party of big cities and university towns. Nor just a party of the young. Or a party of devoted Remainers. We must be a party of labour. A party close to working class people. People we haven’t listened to or respected enough.
After losing her Don Valley seat, which she held for 22 years, an emotional Caroline Flint said: “What is the point of the Labour party if we don't respect and represent those (working class) voices?"

@BBCLookNorth
As a Labour member there were lots of reasons to not retweet the Maxine Peake interview. Among them appearing to blame the voters for not voting Labour.
If the Bill had gone through they would have been the Law. End of. Maybe you ought to ask Starmer and others why they didn’t secure a deal when it was on the table? You reap what you sow. The People’s Vote Campaign gambled on all or nothing. You’ve got nothing.
.
@CarolineFlintMP
has pointed the finger at Labour's 'ardent Remainers' Keir Starmer, Emily Thornberry, Hilary Benn and Yvette Cooper as a big factor in why the party lost 59 seats in the general election.
#Ridge
For more, head here:
I said on
#marr
that 40 plus
@UKLabour
seats could be lost. To be precise polls show 48 seats lost to Brexit Party, just 4 to Libdems. Including every seat in Sunderland, Barnsley, Wolverhampton & Stoke plus rock solid Labour seats represented by
@Ed_Miliband
&
@YvetteCooperMP
A must read. People rage at importing chlorinated chicken but importing Ferring Pharmaceuticals' puberty blockers to be used on young children is met with silence. Apparently since 2013 they have donated £1.4m to the Lib Dems. I hope Labour hasn't taken any money.
Labour’s defeat? For ardent remainers, it’s all Jeremy and the failed Corbyn project; for diehard Corbynistas, it’s Brexit, Tory lies and the nasty media. Both are in denial.
David Miliband omits to mention there was a General Election in 2017 with Labour & Tory manifestos committed to honour the 2016 Referendum result. Absolute majority of MPs voted recently against a second referendum.
@BBCr4today
MPs can keep on asking for “no deal” to be taken off the table but the public don’t trust those who ask this to deliver Brexit. We’d have more trust and support if we said take Remain off the table too.
Actually having sent me the most patronising letters from an MP. You avoided my eye in the lift and was lost for words when I enquired if I was going to receive anymore.
Just met
@CarolineFlintMP
in the lift. Very frosty
Didn't like my letter asking her to explain why she's backing
#Brexit
which
@uk_tpo
estimates would cost her constituents 950 jobs in a No Deal scenario and 500 if there is a Brexit deal
Her constituents deserve an explanation
Very very striking that even Labour candidates who made the case for Brexit powerfully, like
@CarolineFlintMP
in Don Valley, have been thrown out in favour of the Tories. Can the argument really be made that a more Brexity Labour Party would have performed much better?
In
@uklabour

It is clear. There is an 11th hour attempt to overturn the result of the EU Ref 2016. Even if it means siding with Johnson, Rees-Mogg et al to stop any deal & leave us crashing out. The consequences are dire & a 2nd Ref will lead to far right resurgence, discord & distrust
There was nothing “fabled” about the 17.4m they were ordinary people who cast their vote. Since when do we invalidate Elections 2 or 3 years on because sadly some voters are no longer with us.
@DonnyFreePress
If this was happening in Surrey, it would have been an instant emergency not an afterthought.
@jeremycorbyn
right to call for emergency cobra meeting and flood relief funds now.

I & 18 Labour colleagues have written to Jean Claude Junker & Donald Tusk urging the EU Commission, EU27 with the U.K. Goverment to work night and day to agree a deal. An orderly Brexit is better than a No Deal Brexit. The public are tied of deadlock and want
#Brexit
resolved.
You weren’t my Campaign Officer & you rarely campaign. For 22 yrs I’ve been in the same village - a boundary change in 2010 put my house 400m outside of Don Valley. A majority of members selected me on the 1st ballot. You joined after Labour lost in 2010. Sad you’re so nasty
Really unhelpful, ageist and divisive nonsense. Don’t know whether
@pollytoynbee
realises but at the next General Election there will be more pensioners than ever and fewer young people. Many young working class first time voters voted Leave.
This Saturday Britain turns a remainer nation: more young remainers joined the electoral register, more old leavers died. A Final Say vote would stop the will of dead ruling over the will of the young:
Thanks to everyone across the country, inside & outside of politics who has tweeted, texted, emailed & written to me with such kind messages. Have a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Here’s a snap from the family album in 1965 under a

Hearing that Labour has decided to hold additional hustings in Leeds and Brighton. Unclear how that will satisfy critics who say they should be in parts of the country that didn't vote for the party last month.
The seriousness of the PM's
@BorisJohnson
broadcast can not be underestimated. We can show spirit, humour and resilience but only if we follow the rules. Stay home and only leave for essential reasons. Stay safe and you support our NHS and save lives.
If Labour doesn't do more to win back Leave voters in the North, Midlands and Wales, then Boris Johnson will win a majority and a ruinous Hard Brexit will happen within weeks.
Here's what it needs to do in the last fortnight.
Early warning. Doncaster turnout similar to 2014. Labour vote in Doncaster halved. Pro Brexit Parties not inc Tories up 10%. Brexit Party 45% of the vote. It would be a mistake for Labour to only become a Party for Remain/2ndRef voters.
Too many on the left fail to credit
@frankfieldteam
for decades of campaigning on child poverty and failures of our benefit system because they wish to maintain an illusion that they have a monopoly on progressive socialist values. Compare with stampede to condemn him now.
Remember tonight, tomorrow and everyday after is that
@UKLabour
is not a Party for 52% or 48%. We’re a Party to bring people together not divide them more. A pro Second Referendum message is toxic to many heartland Labour voters. Time to start listening.

Some are confused about why Trump's vote up amongst women, minority & new voters of all ages. Lesson for centre-left if you try to shame, blame, embarass voters for supporting Trump, the Tories, Leave - you don't win them over they just don't tell you and vote.

For clarity I do not believe that Momentum promotes anti-Semitism or all their members are anti-Semitic. But among Jeremy supporters, for whom Momentum was their organising focus to take over local Labour parties, there was an angry, extreme & anti-Semitic element.
For the last 1000 days People’s Vote campaigners have insulted, demeaned and patronised Leave voters. This People’s Vote paid for poll, for which I cannot find data on PV or YouGov websites, also shows 4 in 10 2017 Labour voters not voting for us today. Very worrying.
Perhaps
@CarolineFlintMP
shld have read this before appearing on

It’s because

bears no resemblance to what was promised, that people should have the right to confirm it or change their minds
It’s saying ‘no’ to their demand for a referendum that’s disrespectful
So the Labour Party member who filmed this sees
@joanryanEnfield
as more of a threat to
@UKLabour
values than the Iranian state which opposes a free press, trade unions, gay and women’s rights? Not forgetting the incarceration of 🇬🇧 aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
Quite extraordinary that we are in this state and that there are some
@UKLabour
MPs that would agree with this course of action, notably
@CarolineFlintMP
#marr
Momentum brought with it angry and extreme voices including an antisemitic element. It was because they were Jeremy supporters there was division about how to deal with them. That is my point.
I respectfully disagree with
@CarolineFlint
, so her personal tone was disappointing.
But accusing Momentum of being an engine of antisemitism is deeply unfair. It was founded by
@jonlansman
, himself subjected to vile antisemitism, and most of its members just want a better world
Public support for tackling climate change has made huge progress 👍 But as Shadow Sec for Energy & Climate Change I came across punitive campaigners with little regard for lower income homes👎 Stopping public transport, newspapers & ambulances won't help - Be positive

Abstained on Dominic Grieve’s amendment & he has voted against his own amendment. Amendment fell. Now can we hear the majority of sensible voices across the House who accept we’re leaving the EU and want a deal be heard above hardline Leavers & Remainers
A debate on how women's & trans' rights could move forward together is long overdue. All parties have ducked this. Usually if it affects women -
@UKLabour
& the PLP are there. Yet a combo of lazy policy, no debate & keeping heads down has led us here.
Important thread (for me!): With heavy heart I announce I will be leaving the BBC. Despite sterling efforts by new DG to come up with other programming opportunities, it could not quite repair damage done when Andrew Neil Show cancelled early summer + Politics Live taken off air
Disappointed to be branded a ‘hard Brexit’ MP by Lord Mandelson who I have a lot of respect for. I voted Remain. I back a deal, no hard NI border, workers’ rights, close trading relationship etc. What’s ‘hard’ about that. This debate has become too polarised
#politicslive
Have I missed something - since when did the EU stop Thatcherism? Privatisation. Sale of council homes. Destroying mining communities. Labour Governments stop Tory policies.
Big cheers from right wing Conservatives for intervention of

..a heroine for those seeking to turbo charge Thatcherism outside the EU.
This from a self-proclaimed Corbyn supporter in response to my get well to the PM & his partner. Thankfully these people represent the few and not the many.
Today is the anniversary of
@UKLabour
winning the 1997 General Election. The largest Labour victory ever, the start of the longest serving Labour Government and Blair the longest serving Labour PM. Proud to have played a part. This is what winning looks like 👇
In the last 50 years
@UKLabour
has won just 4 of the last 14 General Elections. How many more do we have to lose before a Labour Leader recognises that it’s not enough to be principled, we have to be perceived to be moderate, patriotic & fiscally responsible as well?
2O years ago today,

Thank you Stephen. But I believe another referendum would be divisive and won’t resolve anything. Parliament is honour bound to leave the EU securing a Deal most Leave and Remain voters can support.

The EU has in the past divided the Labour Party and not on left/right lines. We need a deal for an orderly Brexit. There will be further Brexit discussion after we leave but a deal will help the healing to start and bring people together. My piece for

Education isn't a level playing field. Some children start school over a year behind their peers. Parents' education, home & means impact on attainment. If 6 weeks summer holiday causes a learning dip what will 6 months do? We need an education recovery programme now.
Manufacturing makes up less than 10% of the UK economy. It needs to be at least 15%. We need to train, invest and make more. I'm backing

I seem to recall that it was thought clever to have a President intervene in the Remain campaign - that worked well didn’t it? With the greatest respect Macron doesn’t really get why people voted Leave in
#euref
Some reasons
@UKLabour
won OTD 1997.
1.Leaders who believed that modest, but credible, progressive policies were central to winning centre ground voters.
2.Members & candidates understood the need to win over Tory voters.
3.Labour stayed close to values of working class voters.
Really
@Andrew_Adonis
? Contemptible and untrue. A bit rich coming from a man who has benefitted so much from patronage including a Cameron appointment. Look in a mirror and you will see the worse aspects of “Leave” behaviour looking back at you.
The lack of self awareness about what brought us to

by those who are regarded as so clever and had real power and influence to do something never fails to amaze me. It never seems to occur to them why public may not trust them with their future.

‘Brexit gets in the way of the reforms we need.’ But we weren’t event talking about the need for them pre referendum, so it has at least served that purpose.
Shout about this. 800 women a year dead because they are women. U.K. women are twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease as from breast cancer. More likely than men to receive an incorrect diagnosis, substandard treatment and aftercare

This point is well made but would be stronger if there was acknowledgement that Labour’s 2nd Ref promise contributed to our defeat in 54 seats and turned safe Labour seats into marginals. The People’s Vote Campaign made some MPs & members feel better at the expense of others

Richard you only want to overturn the 2016 Referendum result and therefore you have nothing constructive to offer a debate on getting a deal as we leave the EU
GoodQuestion.But answer isn’t to vote for a job-destroying,costly Brexitdeal that wld damage Britain &bears no resemblance to what was promised. Better to reconsiderBrexit entirely,supporting the options approved by LabourConference, including new refrndm,which is gaining support
Indications are that National and EU elections will lead to a more right wing EU. Who knows what that will mean for workers’ rights, health & safety, environment? We don’t want to follow EU down a backwards route through harmonisation if those standards reduced.
Not exclusively Leave seats but all who signed and others share concerns that a Stop Brexit referendum would drive a wedge between our bedrock support and our Party, undermining our historic role as a party of the whole nation. No to any
