Polly Toynbee is a Guardian columnist, formerly BBC social affairs editor. Her latest book An Uneasy inheritance, my family and other radicals is out in June
I've written about class as a Guardian columnist. But this time it's different. This time it's personal.
My new book, An Uneasy Inheritance: My Family and Other Radicals, is available 1 June. You can pre-order from Waterstones:
Eton Head confirms to me that every pupil had a Covid test on arriving at school. Imagine if every child and teacher in the country had access to those private tests. Instead growing numbers stuck at home for lack of a test..
Unbelievable!! Graham Smith head of Republic has been arrested for unloading placards by Trafalgar Square. He and 6 volunteers are in the police station. This is new anti-protest laws in action..
The physical attack on Owen Jones is a shameful and terrifying harbinger of the Brexit world of hate, intimidation, and scapegoating, egged on by an undemocratic, unelected Prime Minister calling opponents "terrible collaborators".
Bravo for LBC’s James O’Brien! He wins Ofcom battle with Institute of Economic Affairs. Now BBC should ban IEA until they reveal who finds this right wing lobby.
Just renewing travel insurance: £35 added for Brexit! Because of UK losing EHIC card for EU health. I don't recall insurers or anyone telling us that in the referendum
What's the best memorial for Tessa Jowell? Restore Sure Start, reopen the lost 1000 children's centres. Gov ministers' homilies to her are insincere while they uproot her legacy
I sense panic at GBNews. MarkDolan show keeps begging me to go on again. Why?Could be Ofcom investigation means they need non-Rightists urgently to prove 'balance'? I suggest no progressives do GBNews til they have parity of left/right presenters.
'Labour’s only plan is to hope you forget that Angela Rayner is deputy leader.' That's Greg Hands' email message today to Tory members. He must think his party is sexist and classist. Rayner is a great Labour asset.
This Saturday Britain turns a remainer nation: more young remainers joined the electoral register, more old leavers died. A Final Say vote would stop the will of dead ruling over the will of the young:
A local carer has been driving around all forecourts, no luck, now on empty, can't do any of her visits. What will happen to her frail old people left alone? This govt has lost control.
Am I missing something? Anyone heard/read Tory outrage at dangerous St George’s day protesters attacking police and a police horse? Tommy Robinson /Laurence Fox inspired rampage rather worse than peaceful environmentalists jailed for blocking traffic
“It’s not time for PR," says Lab shadow minister Alex Sobel. "The time for PR was 100 years ago.” Lab to debate PR at conf as YouGov shows 83% Lab members + 63% Lab voters back electoral reform.
Victoria station early today: all women young and old and all over-40s wearing masks, virtually none for young men. Any 2nd wave may be down to man-spreading
UK Covid deaths 3X major EU countries,hosp admissions 6X worse. Polls show public more cautious than slapdash govt. I just recovered,don't know where I caught it,maybe on the tube where too few wear masks, men FAR worse. TFL, why no announcements telling all to mask up???
@tfl
Ruth Davison does a disservice to mothers: many do very well in politics. Covering her resignation with 'motherhood' excuses is deeply depressing. What a waste of a resignation that should have been against Boris stamping on the constitution.
What was 'the will of people' is now 'the will of dead people'.From Saturday, new young remain voters on register tip the balance v old dead leavers.Time for a Final Say Referendum
May should cancel all Trump meetings today. His intervention in our politics is not just a direct insult to her, but to this country. Take back control!
BBC's Laura K and Kamal A are hard-hitting on the terrible growth and living standard forecasts. But neither of them ONE WORD about how Brexit vote is largely responsible. How are people to know the truth?
If Tory ministers and MPs don't step up and attack Trump's racist attacks on the London mayor, they confirm all Baroness Warsi says about deep racism and Islamophobia in their party
Of course Labour can't possibly eject Neal Lawson of Compass for a 2-year-old tweet of great good sense. Even to threaten risks stirring a mighty rebellion - and not by the usual suspects. The majority of the members voted for proportional representation! Sack the lot?
The OBR says the Chancellor's measures will result in a £19bn reduction in spending on public services, after accounting for inflation. Far worse cuts to come...
Interesting. Here in Westminster abbey for the NHS 75th loud claps for Keir Starmer walking in, but bare smattering and much silence for Sunak. In the pews conflicting emotions: Dean of W’minster aptly says “Here is courage tested to its limits”.

I'm not sure either George or Polly are centrists; let's avoid the term. Nor do they agree on the past. But it is perhaps the great paradox of our time that as ancient foes, they now find themselves on the same side in the great "open/closed" schism that defines politics today.
Puzzling: all his life Corbyn followed Benn demanding Labour party democracy. Now he's in charge, does he still want power to the members? 87% of party want to stay in Single Market and Customs Union, why doesn't he?
Not one MP who broke away from their party has been elected, not one. Honorable MPs following their conscience were punished, though voters say they hate whipped obedience. Our pernicious FPTP voting system kills off all political rebels and innovators.
No, surely not. Yet more identical coverage of Prince Philip’s life again on tonight’s 10 o’clock news. Plainly complaints have no effect. Where is moderation and balance?

Very many of us will miss you, your bravery, your willingness to stand up to bullies and your sheer brilliance as a writer. Sad day...
On BBC WATO now “trade expert” from Institute of Ec Affairs with no mention of this as right wing thinktank that doesn’t reveal who funds it. Never again BBC!
"Whether it’s the economy or education, the Labour Party would take us back to square one" says R Holden, Con party chair. But most people would be glad, as YouGov finds 75% think things are worse than in 2010: it will take a while to put things back to how they were.
“ There are many many more of us than you!” Sing anti racist anti Brexit marchers - and they’re right, as I leave the tiny UKIP leavers demo and join them, many many times bigger
Garden centres going bust with unsold spring stock - and people stuck at home wanting plants? Deliveries? Taking them in vans down streets so people can come out (one by one) to buy them?
Remember tomorrow: bowling alleys and casinos open, just as Covid-19 sweeps across Europe again. Same as March, strange Brexity island belief that we alone are immune...
YouGov:
"Most Britons (55%) prefer that the country remained a member of the ECHR, while around a quarter (23%) think Britain’s membership should be withdrawn." Here's the truth: most people are so much less stupid and nasty that the Tories always think they are.
Therese Coffey addressing the British Association of Shooting and Conservation, said:
"I’m frankly fed up with the right to roam campaign. The only things that have rights to roam are farmers, their pigs and cattle."
Keir Starmer's clear, powerful, well-argued case puts to shame Boris Johnson's pathetic opener, with neither vision for Britain's future, nor detailed explanation of his deal, only promises written on air.
War against the BBC steaming up. SueCameron just now unchallenged on BH says a hundred go to jail for not paying licence fee. Real number 5,all serial fine defaulters,fee just minor one,judged well able to pay. See how often Tory croc tears for poor used to attack BBC
@DAaronovitch
Ah, me too! I was called earlier by Newsnight to join this "interesting" discussion on divided Britain - with Rod Liddle - so I said no. Nothing would be interesting about a knockabout with a boorish misogynist shock-jock. Let's see who agrees...
@DAaronovitch
NHS on its knees pays large sum to Virgin Care for failing to win Surrey children's services when contracts went to local NHS. HSJ says just one of 6 CCGs involved paid Branson £328,000 compensation. Total sum unknown.Insanity.
Here it is already, the 1st lie of the new Brexit era: "Everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum and in the general election last year is delivered by this deal,” a Downing Street source said.
"There are 700,000 children in London living at or below the poverty line" Crocodile tears of George Osborne's leader in today's Standard. He is directly to blame for this, his vicious £12bn benefit cuts hitting famiiies hardest right now. Expect no apology.
BBC denies freedom of speech to its two great national treasures, Attenborough and Lineker, "cancelled" by govt intimidation. These icons will be loved forever, but if BBC lacks Reith's resistance to interference it may not be - while this govt will soon be gone
David Lammy in Parl square rally: Organise to take back this country! This deal makes us subordinate to Trump. Reject hostile environment of Bexiters. You were sold a lie by Boris J.
@JolyonMaugham
Frightening press this morning. They called for sovereignty of parl but when parl asserts itself they protest. Called for escape from EU courts- but when our Supreme Court rules, that’s not legit either. Realms of dictatorship by unelected PM w no majority.
Too many Brexit low points to count - but IDS takes a biscuit or two envying the young who will "be out there buccaneering, trading, dominating the world again." This mad and bad crew really do expect the old British empire to rise from the sea and rule the waves again..
Bravo Phillip Lee MP, resigning ministerial job to call for right of country to vote on final deal. Take note the rest of you, Tory and Labour MPs, put country before party today
Johnson renegs on pre-election promises to compensate victims on Shropshire visit to floods. Note to journos - don't report any promise he makes as fact, unless signed with lawyer present.
Next available GP appointment, 5 weeks I'm just told. Never mind Boris Johnson photo ops in hosp (pretending camera we see him through isn't there), the protesting father was just being factual about plight of NHS. Advise PM stays away from it
Weep no tears for her: as she goes she praises "compromise" but her "No deal is better than a bad deal" was an atrociously perverse untruth she could never reverse.
Heartbroken??? What does it take to break this government's heart? Here's my list of deliberate cruelties that left them stone-cold frozen- hearted. Please add your own...
It's time weather persons on TV stopped beaming and smiling about hot weather. Time they looked serious and warned of the significance of ever more extreme weather.
Thanks Declan. It was Evan Davies suggestion that Osborne and I were close together in today’s politics that set me off. Sometimes there’s too much cosiness in polite TV studio debates. Osbornes smooth denial of any regrets sails above his wreckage
Why does BBC use IDS to opine on anything? NAO’s devastating report on universal credit shows he never follows evidence, obstinate, fixated, obtuse. So why him talking on cannabis v sensible Willetts?
