Stepping back from the culture wars for a short thread on

. Believe it or not, this is my specialist area of research and as I finish up a new paper on the topic, I thought I would share some interesting results. Strap in!
@MythinformedMKE
Yes it’s very hard to find any historian who has discussed this issue and Peterson’s argument that they had ‘Socialism’ in their name is absolutely water tight. You are a very good critical thinker! 🫡
Peterson thinks it’s completely unknown if the Nazis were left or right wing. He had a study planned that could have resolved it but the damn woke mob stole his professorship before he could do it. So now it’s a completely open question.
Bill Maher despite decades of practice is still pumping out the absolute lowest quality anti-vaccine rhetoric. He can’t even engage in normal conversation on the topic just gasping to get to his next talking point.
Seth MacFarlane is better at making the case for vaccines than any public official or medical expert I’ve seen.
Here he demolishes Bill Maher’s stupid assumptions and anecdotal “evidence”
So much stupid in such a condensed segment. Joe manages in 1 min to demonstrate how bad his reasoning is, how terrible his sources of information are, what a shit comedian he is, how far down the conspiracy rabbit hole he is, and how genuinely terrified he is of vaccines.
The primary reasons Peterson views the Trump prosecution with skepticism are that he: 1) is a polemical right wing ideologue with terrible critical thinking, 2) has a credulous approach to right wing conspiracy theories, 3) does no research beyond being a melted Twitter addict.
Yoel Roth was talking with
@karaswisher
about how unpleasant it was to be personally targeted by the RW outrage machine. He also demurred from painting Elon as a villain. Here is Elon helping to spread the idea that Yoel is pro-child sexualisation. Elon's cosying up to QAnon.
Musk’s twitter isn’t anymore transparent. Where are the emails about his moderation decisions? What even are the moderation rules? Are they the same or different? Taibbi & Rogan are credulous millionaires brown-nosing a billionaire, while posing as anti establishment renegades.
Joe Rogan and Matt Taibbi talk about the public smear campaign against Elon Musk for reinstalling freedom of speech on Twitter:
ROGAN: "I don't think anybody ever anticipated that Twitter would get sold to an eccentric billionaire who is intent on letting all the information get…
Jordan Peterson is now completely unhinged. He’s a polemical conspiracy theorist who projects his neurotic obsession with Christianity & belief in lurking demonic forces onto the rest of the world. He was a wannabe prophet his whole adult life and now is an addled online guru.
Last Peterson clips for today… here’s him doing a good impression of Alex Jones on the ‘so-called’ vaccines and ‘so-called’ Pandemic. Absolute InfoWars level anti vaccine nonsense.
The remarkable superpower of Bret & friends is that they are absolutely devoid of self awareness & incapable of shame. Hotez has achieved more in the past year than Bret’s entire academic output. Hotez works to produce affordable medicine. Bret has an anti-vaxx podcast & a hat.
That’s just it. Hotez isn’t a Feynman or Kasparov. He’s SBF or Lysenko—protected by a system that isn’t interested in the truth. Either he knows a lot more than Rogan and is lying about it, or he knows a lot less and should be working to close the gap.
Lex, you spent Thanksgiving with the Trumps, your heroes are Elon Musk & Joe Rogan, you are furious at Fauci & admire RFK Jnr. Imagine if instead of this faux centrist stuff he acknowledged his bias, then said that *despite that* he’s going to try and have varied conversations.
I can help. There was a global pandemic from a novel coronavirus. Evidence suggests it was likely zoonotic in origin. Millions died. We developed effective vaccines. The vaccines have been demonised by anti-vaxxers, like Eric’s brother, & fear mongered by contrarians, like Eric.
The pandemic has been good in one way: it has highlighted how many prominent public intellectuals are bad at research, conspiracy prone, and really just bad thinkers.
Elon is as red-pilled as Rogan. There is no appealing to reason here. They think the virus was only dangerous to the elderly and vaccines are more dangerous than the virus to healthy people taking vitamin D.
Seriously Elon? This is monstrous. 200,000 Americans needlessly perished (including 40,000 Texans, our neighbors) because they were victims of antivaccine disinformation during our awful Covid delta/BA.1 waves in 2021-22. Please don’t do this…
@PriyamvadaGopal
@Kings_College
This is chilling.
It's not that common in the UK to refer in everyday situations to academics as 'Dr'. Demanding a porter do so & then assuming they wouldn't because of race is unfair. Almost no one refers to me as Dr. Kavanagh but that doesn't mean they are anti-Irish.
Joe Rogan genuinely may be one of the most credulous humans on the planet. He honestly believes that Alex Jones is a hard nosed researcher who spends all his days pouring over documents and gets most things right.
okokok I will try to ease off on the Bretposting a little bit but jesus christ
Bret speculates that the invasion of Israel may be an attempt by "Goliath" to drive a wedge between Bret and some of his new antivax friends
Try and remember: Lex is a 39 year old (likely) millionaire, with one of the most popular podcasts in the world. He interviewed Kanye after his antisemitic turn, wants to interview Andrew Tate & still stans for Elon Musk. He is not an undergraduate engineer or a puppy.
One of the most surprising things about Jordan Peterson is that he’s party famous for telling people to suck it up, stop being so self-centered, & indulging in self pity, while he is an incredibly fragile, narcissist, with a huge persecution complex.
This is probably the most comprehensive deconstruction of Jordan Peterson’s collective output to date. It displays a deeper engagement with his work than many of his fans. If Jordan was what he claims to be he would welcome this kind of engagement.
Somethings that should be clear to anyone paying attention by now are that Elon Musk:
1) constantly lies & exaggerates
2) falls for really low level scams and spoofs
3) doesn’t seem to understand technical details or employee’s jobs
4) breaks most public pledges
5) is not funny
Huberman does not come out of this looking like a normal person. The self mythologising and overselling also fits very well with what we’ve seen in his content. Does not sound like a dude I’d want to take life advice from.
Yes it’s a shame. I wonder if there are any people Lex knows who might have some familiarity with how that happened. Looking into it… but I’m just a dummy, asking questions, I’m not suggesting anything.
That account is pretty bad. It really should not be using the horrors of Sandyhook for shock value and to generate attention while ignoring the real harm and hurt of the families. You know the people that Alex Jones targeted leading to years of abuse and harassment.
Maybe the most evil account on here. Designed to tickle people’s “morbid curiosity” but actually torments your soul if you’re still human and makes you more subhuman if you’re “extremely online.” So much worse than “porn.” Yet there’s a whole industry devoted to “banning porn.”
Lex is very mad at the distrust in science that was generated in the pandemic. Not by Trump (who he pivots away from), not by his anti vaccine friend Joe Rogan, or his anti vaccine friend Bret Weinstein who he hosted to discuss ivermectin. No, Lex is very upset with Fauci.
Amazing evolutionary logic just dropped! Any culture practice that persists for a long time necessarily is evolutionarily adaptive. The mind boggles at the implications. We don’t deserve Bret!
@Alex05910347
Has nothing to do with preference. Circumcision has stood the test of evolutionary time. If it was simply negative, selection would have eliminated it.
Joe Rogan’s caution around the long term safety of vaccines VS. Joe Rogan promoting various supplements that have barely any clinical trials and none on long term effects. 🤔
Man... globalist conspiracies, comparisons of Trump to Jesus. I guess this is a great lesson of how foolish it was for people to engage by ‘guilt by association’ when they noted the questionable decision to partner up with Sovereign Nations.
Elon gave the 'Twitter Files' email backlog to Bari Weiss & Matt Taibbi then jumped on a Twitter Space hosted by Kim Dot Com and Ian Miles Cheong. A great illustration of his lack of bias.
Is Jordan under the impression that he’s a tough man? I just can’t imagine Peterson in a fight. For a start, he would scuff his Twitter/Two face suits.
lol. Peterson 'argues' the Bible provides the basis for truth itself, noting without it there is *no possibility* of truth. Then states: 'I can't see any holes in that argument, and I can't see any holes in it from a scientific perspective either'. He's a bog standard preacher...
This is why I'm sceptical that Lex is all about spreading love. A noted misogynist gets arrested for human trafficking & Lex's reaction is to laugh about Twitter drama, post a meme, emphasise how it won't impact his planned content, and include some passing sycophancy for Elon.
Rogan and Russell are the idiot kings of online discourse. Smug, lazy, supremely confident and consistently wrong. Bret has never studied viruses and he’s a blow hard pundit, not a researcher. Malone & McCullough also DO rely primarily on political conspiracy rhetoric.
Rogan and Russell Brand cite Bret Weinstein as an authority on lab leak with a "deep knowledge" of viruses in bats.
(He has never studied viruses. He spent a season tracking bats to see if he could find evidence of his hypothesis that bats built little tents. He could not).
Sam Harris correctly condemns Rogan & co on RFK Jnr. for:
1. Not doing enough preparation to challenge him.
2. JAQs in ways that implicitly endorse his claims.
3. Failing to call out conspiracy tendencies.
4. Claiming to be fighting MSM censorship.
5. Not seeking actual experts.
Rogan starting 2023 by reminding people he is still the premier outlet for anti/vaxx idiocy. Also note Bret mentioning at the end that he’s now unsure about other ‘so-called’ vaccines. These two arrogant idiots are made for each other.
Barely into this and my god it’s terrible. In the first five minutes you have Joe declaring he is unvaccinated, Joe & Bret strongly implying that his recovery was related to ivermectin, then Bret suggesting what we need is to promote a ‘Rogan protocol’.
So Musk’s brilliant plan is to focus on A+ engineers… and his message to them so far is:
- I fire people regularly
- I do not allow people to work remotely
- I’ve downsized the workforce by around 50% get ready
- You will be in permanent crunch
- I change plans on whims
After looking at so much guru content I’m less sympathetic than when I started. Part of the reason is the unrelenting narcissism but another is the constant claims to being stoic intellectual warriors when in reality they are usually thin skinned drama queens.
If you are politically tribeless but think Tucker Carlson is usually right, Project Veritas does good investigations, and Tulsi Gabbard is a very reasonable and wise politician. You are not politically tribeless, you are just lacking in self awareness.
This isn’t edgy. It’s utterly predictable. Joe is an anti vaccine advocate and a credulous conspiracy theorist. So this is just him offering patronage to a respected elder of his tribe.
The credulous response amongst the heterodox to Rogan's 'apology' is exactly why they fall for people like Bret Weinstein and never anticipate the conspiratorial & partisan trajectory of people like Rubin, Maajid, & Lindsay until it is transparently obvious.
Bret inhabits an alternative reality. One where the vaccines were discovered to be deadly, during his PhD he uncovered a fatal flaw that undermines the safety of all drugs in the US, and he is a noted evolutionary theorist. In reality, he’s just a conspiracy prone narcissist.
If you insist on trafficking in fiction, Michael, you need to determine what the traffic will bear. This tweet might have flown in a year ago. But in Aug. ‘23, no one is buying this shit.
Elon is very hard working. Everyday he’s frantically rushing around in his role as personal concierge to Twitter’s far right figures and conspiracy theorists.
Seems to me like there is a coordinated campaign to dunk on Jordan Peterson. Have you noticed every time he tweets something really stupid that lots of big and small accounts are calling him stupid and making fun of him. Most of them are left wing too! Needs to be investigated.
Bret & Heather self diagnosed as having covid based on their analysis & distant consultations with *trusted* doctors. They then took eight tests that were all negative. Their conclusion? The tests are worthless because they don’t support their diagnosis. They are clowns.
Jordan Peterson says he think/ his next book will demolish the case for atheism permanently. The key arguments he references 1) to do science you have to believe in truth and to believe in truth requires belief in God and 2) to believe in good requires belief in God.
Bari Weiss conducted a fawning interview with a conspiratorial populist that the right is propping up? Shocking! She’s a genuine master of faux centrist framing.
Russell Brand, Joe Rogan, Glenn Greenwald, and co. all repeat the same talking point about Alex Jones making some mistakes but often being ahead of the curve. All of them have done zero research into his content and know nothing about his long term predictions & ideology.
Russell Brand: Alex Jones is “ahead of his time,” “there's a need for" him, & the term conspiracy theorist is used to prevent legitimate questions.
Jones lied that SH massacre was a hoax with actors, TX jury this month awarded parents of a slain 6-year-old, $49 million in damages
Bret isn’t a biologist. He’s a conspiracy theorist & anti vaxx podcaster who once studied biology. He has repeatedly demonstrated he doesn’t understand modern evolutionary principles, see his discussions of ‘lineage theory’. He just podcasted on how polio came from pesticides.
I am a biologist. *It is my job to figure out what’s wrong with our evolutionary framework.* Darwin understood this and highlighted all the things that worried him about his own hypothesis. His work has survived and is now a proper—if incomplete—theory of biological diversity.
These three are making millions out of peddling Alex Jones level conspiracism. Two were recently handpicked by a billionaire CEO to report his preferred stories on his social media platform. They and their audiences are absolutely immune to self awareness.
Imagine being a billionaire AND still needing to be a Weinstein reply guy, rushing to ‘investigate’ every-time they feel their tweets aren’t getting enough attention. 😂
Sam’s been fairly open about his contempt for Twitter and that he viewed his continued use of it as a vice but one that *might* be necessary for his work. I’d guess Elon’s shenanigans were just a final push. Don’t get why this would shock anyone who listens to what he says.
Rogan has never been off his anti vaccine kick but seems like he’s kicking it up a notch. And as ever Elon is there to reply guy his concern. We’re doomed to an endless parade of narcissistic millionaires bloviating at each other about how brave they are for repeating nonsense.
They are all narcissists… no you didn’t go 15 rounds. That implies some robust battle with tough challenges. What you had was an indulgent chat with a conspiratorial man child whose fact checking abilities are regularly bested by Alex Jones & Tim Pool.
God Taibbi’s threads suck. He spends time posting content from these two accounts specifically showing how unfair it is to target them… then casually mentions that both accounts he has displayed content from to highlight the innocuous nature weren’t actually suspended(!). 🫠
So her defense here is she didn’t anticipate that a famous anti vaccine advocate would make spurious anti vaccine claims so had not prepared for that. Amazing.
This is typical of “experts.” He shot off this snark while completely ignorant about the fact that this interview was conducted last week. In part because of genuine concerns I had with some of RFK’s answers, I followed him and tagged him to help me understand some studies last…
Glenn Loury’s response to Radley Balko’s extremely critical coverage of the recent Derek Chauvin reappraisals is a rare instance of genuine intellectual humility. It’s heartening to see and he deserves full credit for it.
Part of the reason Jordan is so bad on this is that he is incredibly myopic & self obsessed. His projection is that if anyone understood his argument they would, like him, be utterly convinced. So the only possibility is people either are lying to themselves or don’t understand.
Remind me how many long form debates with critics of their views (or even just non-sycophantic interviews) Joe Rogan and Lex Fridman have taken part in?
Joe's presentation here implies he corrects misinformation, has not pushed any line on vaccines, and does not present himself as being well informed on the topic. All of that is transparently false. As you can hear from him directly in the episodes he is referencing.
Lex’s booklist is getting a bunch of hate. I think he deserves kudos for posting it and that he is an important relic to a 2001 dorm room that must be preserved.
Rogan has always been a credulous conspiracy theorist. He makes millions shilling supplements while fear mongering about vaccines. And he has promoted every flavor of pseudoscience under the sun, including HIV-AIDS denialism. Here’s the thing: Spotify Ken Ethan and didn’t care.
