Acute hepatitis in kids. We urge colleagues with access to samples (blood/liver tissue) to consider SARS-CoV-2 superantigen-mediated disease, potentiated by a second virus (AdV) 🧵1/
6/ We should urgently investigate SARS-CoV-2 superantigen mediated disease, potentiated by an intestinal virus (AdV or other) as a possible mechanism of hepatitis. If confirmed, immunomodulatory treatments could be given and hopefully help.

Most interesting aspect of this case is massive T cell infiltration and recovery after treatment with steroids. Fits w SARS-CoV2 super-ag mediated activation as a cause of hepatitis

5/ Adenoviruses (AdV) sensitises mice to superantigen (Staph. SEB) mediated disease. AdV + SEB triggered acute hepatitis in mice, while AdV or SEB alone did not cause hepatitis:

Just like the US closing its border to China when the virus was already circulating in the states, EU countries are now closing its border with the UK. The new CoV-2 variant is already widespread and these decisions are political-not scientifically motivated
I understand the idea to some extent, but this may quickly become untenable as virus carrying this mutation is picked up in other countries. The UK has arguably the world’s best genomic surveillance of

Viral persistence in MIS-C is now well established, but why mostly in children and preceded by mild COVID-19? Fits w disease tolerance model as described here:
This is an autopsy of 5yo child who died of MIS-C 1 month after infection. SARS-CoV-2 was found in multiple organs by electron microscopy, PCR, or staining. They also found aspergillosis and reactivated CMV, both attributed to immunosuppressive treatment.
