After six months,
@JoshuaPVaughn
and I built Pennsylvania’s first jail death database with funding from
@pulitzercenter
.
Our investigation and overview looks at how jails release people from custody while they’re in the hospital to avoid reporting.
Can’t get over this fact that this dude is clearly wearing a Beast costume (from Disney’s smash-hit Beauty and the Beast) and pretending like it’s a Founding Father coat.
Water continues rising.
My mom said that there are desperate neighbors with their houses underwater. She asked me to tweet that rescue boats be sent to Judd Park, North Fort Myers.

Can you all link me the weirdest Pittsburgh stories? Like the sonic boom no one knew the cause of, that big mega bird in Greensburg, the green flash mid-pandemic, etc.
Nearly 70% of voters banned solitary confinement at the Allegheny County Jail. More than 166,000, supported the ballot measure.
There are men who have been in solitary for 3+ years at the ACJ.
Idk if you’ve ever been inside Allegheny County Jail, but I used to teach there. A “leisure library” is not what it sounds like. It’s a cart or pile of discarded and forgotten books. It’s not a room. It’s not something curated. It’s got literature in it if you’re lucky. (Thread)
Port Authority busses in sinkholes, on collapsed bridges, drivers dying from Covid, drivers picking up PPS kids and getting them to school safely—the real heroes of PGH.
Just spent Saturday morning and $12.00 on the Allegheny Historical Deeds website in order to know every person who owned our house in the past 100 years so that I know the names of all the ghosts.
It’s really incredible how many journalists in Pittsburgh are working for free, on volunteer hours, on little to no budget. Pittsburgh cares about news. We care about our city. We deserve so much more.
Did you know the Early American Nationality Room at Pitt has a secret passage and is two stories? My audio storytelling class requested access in order to record interviews with room curators and tell ghost stories on Halloween.
NEW: Three proposed shield laws in the City of PGH.
1) If Pennsylvania bans abortion, the first bill will instruct the City of Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Police and other law enforcement agencies to de-prioritize enforcement of any abortion-related crime.
Twitter has changed how people in Pittsburgh think about the Allegheny County Jail and justice reporting in Pittsburgh. It has changed how news is covered. It has helped us force bigger news outlets to acknowledge deaths in the jail & challenge local government narratives.
James Byrd, who has been locked in solitary for over three years at the ACJ wrote me this morning. I’d like to share his words with you. 🧵
Good morning. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the tireless efforts put forth by the citizens of Allegheny County...

Some personal news! I have joined
@MarshallProj
’s Cleveland newsroom. I start later this month. Email is in bio.
Working in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania has been an honor and I will miss this city. Thank you, Pittsburgh, for all your support. ❤️
The public records laws in Ohio are 🤯. Something that would have taken me months to obtain in Pennsylvania is sitting in my inbox eight hours after requesting it.
Pennsylvania deserves better.
INBOX:
@AbolitionistLC
received a letter from over 60 individuals incarcerated in Allegheny County Jail on pod 3B reporting a lack of heat and described having to wear double clothing, seeing their breath,
and shivering. ALC lawyers have interviewed individuals on the unit.
U.S. Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.
Yet, at the Allegheny Co. Jail, those who have not been convicted work to make the jail function, for free.
Pittsburgh is the first city in the country to introduce legislation designed to shield abortion providers from out-of-state criminal investigations, Pittsburgh City Councilman Bobby Wilson said in a press conference Tuesday.
Seems like a decent time to remind pittsburghers that you can follow

Our landscape is changing but there are platforms dedicated to delivering you stories outside of the corporate model.
Here it is:
Wilson Bernales, one of two medical doctors currently employed at the Allegheny County Jail, has had his medical license suspended, revoked or denied in at least eight different states.
A First Amendment lawsuit brought by journalist Brittany Hailer has forced Allegheny County to revise policies that previously barred its jail employees and contractors from speaking publicly and with members of the news media. 🙌🏻
THIS IS THE QUICKEST UPDATE OF MY CAREER:
After learning of PINJ’s investigation and subsequent story, vice president of communications of Allegheny Health Network informed the newsroom that Wilson Bernales has been suspended pending assessment of his qualifications.
Pleased to announce that I will begin my role as a Lecturer in Writing at
@PittTweet
this fall, teaching nonfiction, journalism, and a host of other topics. :D
Hi, Pittsburgh. My heart is full with gratitude and sadness when I say I am stepping down as director of
@PINJNews
. Good things are on the horizon for both me and
@jodydiperna
, who will keep the platform alive after my departure.
My Intro to Journalism students brought up
@alexisjreports
removal from protests this summer. Most are transplants from outside of PGH but knew the story and are now paying more attention to local news. Asian and Latina students said it inspired them to sign up for the class.
I’m in downtown Philadelphia in the middle of two demonstrations. On the one side, the Count Every Vote rallies have continued from yesterday. On the other, President Trump supporters are alledging that counting ballots is “illegal.”
It is not.
@VICENews
For those following along, the ghost of Maxine Bruhns, former curator of the University of Pittsburgh’s nationality rooms gifts me earrings. I took my newborn and dad to tour the rooms today. Dad found this in the Ukrainian Room and handed it to me without knowing the story.
2) A bill that seeks to regulate deceptive advertising by crisis pregnancy centers in the City of Pittsburgh.
3) A bill that aims to shield abortion providers in the City of PGH from out-of-state investigation or prosecution for providing abortion care that is legal in PA.
I teach pretty late in Oakland during the week. And two of my students have been walking me to my car at night. They insisted. And our post-class walks have been some of the best discussions I’ve had all year. The kids are alright 💜
We know how
@whitewhalebks
sustained us throughout the pandemic, providing space and support to PGH writers and artists.
We, the community, know how remarkable it is, how important it is to Pittsburgh. I hope White Whale feels supported and loved today and every day. <3
Amy Downs called the Pittsburgh Current ‘not a real news outlet’ after we published a story on the Allegheny County Jail banning inmates from receiving books.
PublicSource ran the same story a couple hours after us. What does that tell you?
Ok, I reported an editor who was cyberstalking me to his newsroom. His newsroom told me he was harmless and I should go on a date with him. He had got my information from this staff. Do not do that????? Do not give names away without consent????? Take allegations seriously.
@Slopiak
He was struck by two approaching trains at the same time and decapitated. He won as a write-in candidate because he hated Catholics. He was an illiterate street preacher and was arrested twice while in office. A man threw a slab of butter at his face.
This story is a Mad Lib.
Inbox: Civil Rights Corps, David Rudovsky and Jules Lobel (University of Pittsburgh School of Law) filed an ethics complaint with the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania against the District Attorney of Allegheny County, Stephen Zappala.
A letter from a prisoner working to prove his innocence. He had been denied the autopsy in his case for decades. He says Allegheny v Hailer changed that.
This is not an exaggeration: I have had to break the news of an incarcerated person’s death on every family vacation each summer since 2020.
20 men have died following their incarceration at the Allegheny County Jail since April 2020.
I had two professors tell me that my sentences were easy to read when I was in college. I used to feel insecure about that. I always felt too blue collar, too plain-language. (Still do).
But, after reading 40 students feature stories, man, do I love an easy-to-read sentence.
I am without power, but an incarcerated person leaked that Martin Bucek, 55, has died at the Allegheny County Jail. Story will be posted when I am back online.
Bucek was found unresponsive in a single cell at the ACJ Saturday according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner 🧵
Another man died at the Allegheny County Jail this week. 18 men have died since April 2020. None of their autopsies are available to the public. Tomorrow
@PINJNews
and
@rcfp
are going to try to change that in court.
Read about our case here:
Circling back to Biles: if a woman can step out of the Olympics, you too can quit what you don’t want to do. It’s the ultimate NO. Say no to shit. Say, I’m done. I’m out. Say, I’m going to take care of me. Say, F— expectations. Say, healing is more important.
After a nearly three-year legal journey, records provided by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner reveal an autopsy was not performed for Daniel Pastorek, a man who died in the jail in November 2020.
I was denied access to David Fiori's hearing this morning by the Allegheny Court of Common Pleas despite the fact that I submitted a request yesterday for the link. Staff told me that I do not have "approval" and "not just anyone can come in." I said,"this is a public hearing."
Brittany Hailer's nebbiness has, like, permanently changed Allegheny County for the better. And the whole state. And the whole country actually, I bet.
I've said it before but I ONLY became aware of issues at ACJ and started watching JOB meetings because of her reporting
I will be presenting with other journalists and community members from areas across the country where jail deaths are alarmingly high:
Harris County, TX
Allegheny County, PA
New York City, NY
Los Angeles County, CA
Maryland and DC
Baton Rouge, LA

The Pitt News Editorial Board argues that the owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette need to support its employees by giving them fair pay and health care.
My last class at Pitt is today. It has been a good run. I will miss the bright and curious writers of the program, but I’m also excited for what’s on the horizon. 💙
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Man I’d love to see local justice reporter Brittany Hailer on two panels in one week, focusing on the nuances and complexities of the Allegheny County Jail.”
Well, reader, do I have news for you.
A couple of sentimental things. 🧵
1.I got a message from a friend today that Jeff Oaks had been bragging about my new job in Cleveland. He knew my potential and helped legitimize what I was doing through hiring me at the University of Pittsburgh. He died this December.
They said this in regards to these "leisure libraries." This is why I am discouraged when journalists don't interrogate the language a warden uses-- this language not for transparency, but to gaslight and transform the injustices and negligences within their institution.
Local journalism is in crisis.
@PINJNews
, an experiment, kept alive by donations, small grants and volunteer hours, is really hard work. I don’t know if I would recommend it.
Solidarity to P-G and City Paper employees. We gotta see this thing though and lean on each other.
Anthony Talotta, 57, died Wednesday at UPMC Mercy Hospital after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Allegheny County Jail. Talotta, diagnosed with autism and intellectual disability, was rushed from the jail’s mental health unit.
#BREAKING
NEWS: Allegheny County officials are saying a large sinkhole has opened up in the Strip District and have closed Smallman Street until further notice.
Woah!
.
@JoshuaPVaughn
and I have been invited to testify at a policy hearing on the public health crisis of death in custody by PA Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chair Katie Muth and Senator Amanda Cappelletti.
