No lawyers are allowed in Japanese interrogation rooms, and interrogations are rarely recorded. Japanese interrogators go into the room alone with suspects. And then after hours and hours, signed “confessions” miraculously come out of the room.

Service members have no right to legal counsel in Japan. Authorities can interrogate for 8-hours a day with no lawyer present with no video recordings of the interrogations. That needs to change!
