Let's get the word out that the ancient shark this age data was collected from is in fact dead (& not the one pictured) cuz it was caught in a fishing net. It should serve as a sober reminder that sharks & other marine species are under ever increasing pressure from fishing 1/2

Hey paleontologists, credit paleoartists. Most artists work on a contract to contract basis. I hear scientists complain abt facing instability every 1-3 years in non tenured positions. Many artist contracts are only for 1-3 months & we have to set up the next jobs while working.

just fyi there are a few species of giant horsetails still alive today. One species in Chile gets about 5m tall & one in mexico gets 7m tall & both basically look exactly like stuff from the fossil record over 200 million years ago. Check this out:

I've been working on for the last 5 years. Part 1 of the doc comes out Jan 7.
I wanna see more dino art with interesting colorations and soft tissues. Most modern animals, carnivores and herbivores find unique ways to camouflage and disrupt their outline to be difficult to spot. Experiment with color, feathers, ornamental scales, etc!

Of all the "Dinosaur Rennaissance" era paleoartists John Gurche is the one whose influence, technical skill, and actual plausibility of reconstructions is in my opinion the most tragically overlooked and underrated by todays fans of

I'm always amazed when ppl have time to watch entire series of shows and/or play video games. When do yall find time to summon ancient monsters from the depths of time??!?
Whenever I do multiple reconstructions of the same prehistoric animal (or group of related animals) I try to find ways to make each one of them a bit different.
Why?
1 its more fun
2 repeat recons confer false confidence
3 change is how

>actually happens<

Scientifically, artistically, & socially, over-confidence about hypotheses is worse than acknowledging unknowns & allowing yourself to freely explore/express/depict new ideas. It's better to be proven wrong than to pretend your preferred ideas have been proven when they have not.
The life sized

Not that I have time for any more projects (like, maybe ever), but I'm curious what prehistoric ecologies or evolutionary stories yall think I should be doing art/documentary work around.
Pitch me your ancient realms and sell me on why u think the stories they tell matter.
Biological diversity
-in ecosystems and human societies-
is essential for adaptation and survival through challenging times.
This is one of the most universal lessons repeated countless times across deep time and human history.
Sirenians and Dolphins have been evolving alongside each other for somewhere between 5 and 10 million years.
So many games played in that time.
The rarity of seeing these games is likely because both were once much more abundant, but our species has killed most of them.
#Manatee
playing with a pod of dolphins.
Although
#dolphins
&
#manatees
regularly cross paths, it is extremely rare to see them interact. To my knowledge this is the only footage showing the 2 species actively interacting for more than a few seconds.

The
#fossil
record is spooky.
For many extinct animals we only have 1 specimen.
That 1 specimen often represents an entire lineage: many species of that tribe of animals living & spreading across complex landscapes for 1000s of yrs.
Only 1 remains

My perspective is that we should embrace the unknown & the creative possibilities that uncertainty opens up for us, & (correctly) view scientific
#paleoart
as a space to explore new hypotheses. Good paleoart is plausible fiction inspired by hard science; aka hard science fiction.

Dear paleotwitter,
just reciting facts &/or unsolicited correcting of randoms on the internet about specific niche knowledge does not make more people interested in paleontology, but it does make the online community of paleotweeps look like an writhing swarm of "um actuallys".
And also paleoartists:
Help elevate each other's work, not nitpick & cast doubt on other artists' "accuracy" etc. We know yall just doin that cuz u think it makes u look smart, but it doesn't. It looks petty & shuts down plausible creativity (ultimately including your own).
