At first reading of NJ's

bill draft, not only does it only apply the sales tax meaning it raises a paltry amount of funds, the vast majority of those funds goes to *🥁 🥁 🥁* police departments!
You can't make this up. This is the height of dark comedy.
#NJpol
For the record, the protests in NJ yesterday were both effective & safe, especially in Newark and Camden. Prayers that they stay that way, but it helps immensely that the police didn't unnecessarily & violently antagonize ppl for simply exercising their rights.
#BlackLivesMatter
Y'all can drop the New York portion. The stadium doesn't sit on the border or anything. You're firmly in Jersey...welcome, enjoy yourselves, hit up a diner while you're here.
So we'd lose less than 1% of our current jobs while boosting wages for 10% of workers & cutting poverty by about 3%?
Works for me. The goal is to lower & eliminate poverty, not sustain poverty-wage jobs.
#FightFor15
#RaiseTheWage
Someone sent this to me saying it was just taken in Hoboken. It rained a lot, but that level of flooding is insane. We're not doing enough to mitigate flooding in NJ. This will be a costly undertaking & our state budget can't even afford basic maintenance of assets currently.
And then the rest goes to the general fund because of course it does...
This bill does NOTHING for racial & reparative justice & is a slap in the face to all the communities harmed by the drug war that deserve real support & investment to address the wounds of prohibition.
Home Depot literally signed a document saying they would not move to NJ "but for" the tax credits under the Grow NJ program. They didn't get those tax credits. They moved to NJ anyways.
Can ppl stop putting undue faith in the "but for" theory now or do we need 3500 more studies?

Eating a Taylor ham egg & cheese 🥯 while blasting Springsteen and passing TCNJ. This may be my submission for "most Jersey" morning this year...could've added some more points if I was heading to the Shore, but alas.
This makes me think some people don't understand how systemic racism works. It's not about any one individual, it's about systems, processes & practices that deny communities & ppl of color real power, participation & opportunity. Acknowledging that shouldn't be a radical thing.
Employers and economists expected a spike in job applications after enhanced unemployment benefits expired on Sept. 6. That hasn't happened: (w/

I think about this re: NJ. Reps in the leg patting themselves on the back for gaining a 22-seat advantage in the Assembly, but what do they plan to do with it? Can't even identify and dedicate funding for NJ Transit, arguably our most important economic asset. Maddening stuff.
Why is a state with a Democrat supermajority cutting transit funding, while Minnesota DFL which holds the MN Senate by one seat, passed the largest transit expansion in state history.
For real tho, has any state or locale gotten more cred for stuff that it has so little to do with? Sure, Port Authority has to coordinate some things, but you don't see events in Cincinnati getting branded as OH/KY just bc most folks fly into Kentucky to get there. Silliness.
I'm excited to work w/ the incredible folks at

I spend my time avoiding stories about the murder of Adam Toledo in Chicago or Daunte Wright in MN bc I know I won't be able to do my job the rest of the day. When I finally do look, I'm ruined. This nation is unconscionable. I hope, and work to ensure, it is not irredeemable.
Great news for NJ. The big question now is whether lawmakers will implement an appropriate tax structure that raises enough resources to enable real reparative justice for communities terrorized by the War on Drugs. A failure to do so would be a negative stain on the whole thing.
Tamir Rice, 12 yrs old, was murdered on sight by police for playing quietly with a toy gun. No criminal accountability.
Rittenhouse, 17 yrs old, murders in broad daylight, gets his $2 million bail crowdfunded & a coffee sponsorship.
"To be Black & conscious in America..."
Any article that discusses political corruption in New Jersey, but fails to mention the ballot line or boss system of politics, isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
This all completely stems from lawmakers continuing to insist against a sensible tax structure that would ensure a healthy market while raising the resources to enable much needed community investments. To only apply the sales tax at 6.625% (& a max 2% local tax) is nonsensical.
Coming this August...after Color of Law we'll move to Who Cooked Adam Smith's Dinner & The Color of Money, then wrap w/ Multiple Municipal Madness cause my baby not gonna ignorantly complain to me about NJ having 565 towns. You gon' complain then come with solutions.

@KevinMKruse
I recently had someone tell me that $500,000 is "barely upper middle class"...how people can be so divorced from not just reality but the communities around them is so disheartening.
We're gonna be paying the next couple decades for the disconnect between accomplishing an economic feat that few thought was possible (ie soft landing, avoiding deep recession, embracing high investments and eschewing classic austerity) and the majority of the country not caring.
Really interesting that a whole bunch of folks who have no problem benefiting from their Mortgage Interest Deduction every year are pontificating on who is & isn't deserving of subsidy from the federal govt.
That's all student loan forgiveness is. Economic subsidy.
#MathIsReal
All I'll say is this is a really disappointing & disingenuous response. There's tons of things we subsidize as a nation not bc everyone explicitly benefits but bc it's for the greater good. I mean, if we're gonna play this game, let's talk about the Mortgage Interest Deduction...
Pelosi also questioned the policy wisdom of cancelling student loan debt:
“Suppose…your child just decided they, at this time, [do] not want to go to college but you’re paying taxes to forgive somebody else’s obligations. You may not be happy about that."
Y'all see how much fun it is to root for Jersey-based things? Do it on a regular basis and your life will improve markedly, trust me.

So, ultimately, this bill says lawmakers would rather avoid taxing dispensaries (many of which will be headed by already very wealthy cannabis corps) than deliver justice for communities. The reparations they insisted to care about all along are just another bargaining chip.
The spouses of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have New Jersey roots: Jill Biden was born in Hammonton, and Doug Emhoff grew up in Matawan. He attended Hebrew school at Temple Shalom in Matawan.
Low-tax states with less % pop growth than New Jersey: OK, AL, IA, IN, NH, KY, WI, AR, AK, KS, MO, LA, WY
Sooooo....maybe marginal tax rates aren't as important as schools, transit, vibrant communities & other stuff that actually drives our day-to-day joy & happiness?
Wild.
Anyone else have parents who, when they retired, completely forgot the concept of a work day?

The Jan 6 commission was negotiated & watered down only to get zero GOP votes. Do we really need to go through the same experience with the infrastructure bill? What's the point in negotiating when you won't get any more votes from those you're negotiating w/ no matter what?

When folks who claim ppl are fleeing NJ bc of taxes - already the most densely populated state in the nation - fail to equally advocate for affordable housing, it's hard to believe their concern is actually about cost of living. Especially when they start decrying immigrants. 🤔
Other states generally apply tax rates of about 20% total all the way up to about 40%. In fact, one of the lessons we've learned from other states is to avoid taxing cannabis by price point at the point of sale & instead do an excise tax by weight during the production process.

Tamir Rice was 12 years old. There are very many who continue to assert, without hesitation, that his murder was necessary. They do this with their legal names attached to their statements, not a shred of shame to be found.
And folks still have the gall to marvel at our fury.
Unabashed racism, chuckling as it blocks access to public electoral processes. This is what we have in NJ, blatant & abhorrent corruption. For decades, anyone who has called this out has been spit in their face and told it's just raining. But now the public is paying attention...

This is why we focus on tax policy so much - it's 💯 central to fixing our economy & giving everyone a fair shot. Most have no idea how badly things have been rigged & it's why the wealthy fight against common sense tax reforms so fervently.

I don't wanna get into it bc there's no sense in arguing w/ ppl who insist on being dense about it, but the abject dismissiveness regarding discriminatory impacts of The Line along re: race & gender by people who really should know & be better is mighty disheartening.
Between the George Floyd trial, video of VA police brutalizing a Black Army lieutenant *in uniform* w/ his hands up, and the Daunte Wright murder in MN - plus the usual daily stories - constant messages affirming the devaluation of Black life in America really take their toll...
We will never be rid of COVID as long as freedom from responsibility is confused for freedom from tyranny. As long as people feel they only need worry for themselves & their immediate family w/ no role or commitment to broader public/community welfare, this limbo will ravage us.
@JosephPolitano
There's definitely a bit of an "I'm not stinking rich therefore I live paycheck to paycheck" crowd - you see it a lot in NJ from ppl making like $150k-$400k - and it warps the discourse in really frustrating ways that make it hard to have honest convos about equitable taxation.
Now that schools are on the verge of widespread re-openings, I gotta say, 90% of the discourse inherently assumed all children are healthy & not immunocompromised. As someone w/ Sickle Cell Anemia, it was super ableist & frustrating, progressives included. More awareness please.
When it comes to student debt, $100k is "the undeserving rich."
But when it comes to the SALT deduction, $100k is "struggling middle-class homeowners."
Welcome to New Jersey, where everything's made up and the points don't matter!
I'm confused, are people who make $100k a year struggling middle-class folks just trying to get by who need a tax cut, or are they devious idle rich who don't deserve student debt forgiveness?
Y'all New Yorkers already trying to erase NJ when it comes to hosting the World Cup final, we ain't gonna let you do it with the Great Jersey Earthquake of 2024 too!

I generally think folks shouldn't expect fleshed out policy positions from slogans meant to generate awareness, but there's something to be said for voters' first impression of slogans & that cementing their opinion.
Hard to take the "we should stop talking identity politics & get back to kitchen table issues" critiques seriously from the same folks who are opposing/undermining the biggest chance in a generation to address kitchen table issues...thinking something else must be the rub here 👀
There are many, many folks - including economists - who make decisions that they think aren't political and just "based on data" bc they don't/won't recognize that the lens through which they view issues is formed by politics.
Who does/doesn't get power/resources is political.
OMG - marijuana bill is up in Senate Judiciary on Monday at 10am. The bill dropped tonight, the committee advisory went out at 5pm, and the deadline to sign up to testify was 6pm. If you wanna testify, I hope you were Sonic the Hedgehog cause you had to catch all that quickly.
An excise tax on weight would prevent volatility in tax revenue as the price of cannabis fluctuated, plus it wouldn't be a direct tax on the end user at the point of sale. You'd do it between the grower & processer or processer & seller. This bill doesn't wanna tax dispensaries.
This article really lays out what folks mean when they say "people" are leaving NJ en masse. It's not "people" overall - our population has grown. Why are the migration patterns of white ppl considered more important than those of non-white ppl? 🤔
When it comes to this bill,
#BlackLivesMatter
is a punchline.
Here's a thread I did when the ballot measure passed explaining what needed to happen to ensure equity & justice takes place.
Great news for NJ. The big question now is whether lawmakers will implement an appropriate tax structure that raises enough resources to enable real reparative justice for communities terrorized by the War on Drugs. A failure to do so would be a negative stain on the whole thing.
NJ's democracy is in a bad spot. Those in power who bemoan creeping authoritarianism nationally show their hypocrisy when they lean on the scale here at home and refuse to enable open, competitive electoral processes for public office. Good piece by Dena!
Just want to clear up any confusion and affirm that NJPP did not, in fact, arrest Bruce Springsteen. Not only is "Atlantic City" a grossly underrated banger, but Max Weinberg is a fellow Columbia High School alum, so we're in no position to mess w/ the Boss whatsoever.

Enfranchisement should remain a top priority always and forever. that means showing up & building in communities between election cycles! Rebuild public trust & realize a govt of, by, and for the people. The way out of our troubles is through robust democracy & public engagement.
Some folks saying the Senate race is a good test of the power of the Ballot Line. I disagree. The question isn't whether a sitting US Rep w/ all the power & resources inherent can win off the line, but whether a typical community leader can have a legit chance w/o party support.

I don't enjoy stories like a person who walks hours to work being given a car, or someone with debt from medical bills getting relief from GoFundMe campaigns run by their friends and family.
Those are systemic failures that should embarass us as a collective & a nation.
Most of what gets shared as heartwarming stories are usually temporary, small-scale responses to systemic failures. I wish we found it just as inspirational to make structural changes to unjust systems, but I don’t know if our culture knows how to tell those stories.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like if NJ ballot question

@mattyglesias
Isn't the takeaway from Obama admin (and Trump admin) that the mere concept of political capital is a bit stale and that pushing hard on everything yields way more returns than being supposedly judicious about when to go big? Also, it's what voters expect now too.
Nothing would destroy my faith in people's general data literacy like seeing school vouchers come to NJ...this is like debating whether gravity exists. Just look at FL, GA, OH, IN - no shortage of cautionary tales and warning signs to learn from.
