Very sad to hear of the death of Brian Griffin, the photographer behind iconic sleeves for Echo and the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, Teardrop Explodes, Joe Jackson, Siouxsie and many more
#RIP
RIP Annie Nightingale. Such sad news. A pioneer on both radio and TV, a hugely important champion of great music, and a genuinely lovely person, as today's beautiful tributes prove
RIP Alan Rankine. He gave us such great music with The Associates, solo and producing the likes of Cocteau Twins, Paul Haig, Pale Fountains, Anna Domino and Belle & Sebastian. Beautiful photo of Billy and Alan taken by Anton Corbijn for the NME
Remembering Joe Strummer on what would have been his 70th birthday. Here’s his wonderful tape collection photographed at the Strummer Calling exhibition in 2018
Devastating to hear of the death of Ranking Roger. He was always such a joyous bundle of energy on stage, from back in 1981 (when I took these pics & The Beat were the best live act around), right up to the few times I was lucky enough to see him in recent years
On this day in 1979, me and a schoolmate were showing Ian Curtis and Bernard Sumner around Oxford to help them get a guitar strap fixed ahead of Joy Division's gig supporting Buzzcocks at the New Theatre. The shoe repair place in the Co-op on Cornmarket sorted it for free!
Honoured to have a selection of my photos showcased by

including shots of Altered Images, Orange Juice, Psychedelic Furs, Bauhaus, Aztec Camera, The Beat, New Order, The Jam, Depeche Mode, Haircut 100, Duran Duran etc. They’re all here
Absolutely this. From today’s Guardian feature on treasured things that have been discontinued. Surely there has to be a market for a digital-only Time Out with proper listings, circulated on Readly, Issuu etc
Remembering John Peel on his birthday. He celebrated his 40th in August 1979 by playing his 40 favourite records on his radio show. They're in this playlist
RIP Johnny Nash. Here’s a fantastic photo of him and Bob Marley playing at a school in Peckham in 1972. It was taken by Keith Baugh, the art teacher who invited them there. He tells the story on this lovely clip from The One Show

Remembering Desmond Dekker - born on this day 80 years ago. Here’s a wonderful recording of Israelites with members of The Real Thing on backing vocals
Woken up thinking about how many of my all-time favourite groups are heavily influenced by Tom Verlaine and Television - Subway Sect, Echo and the Bunnymen, Aztec Camera, Felt, REM, The Loft, The Clientele… We all live beneath the Marquee Moon. Thank you Tom. 📷 by

Some headlines are describing Denise Johnson as "Singer with Primal Scream". She was so much more than that and wouldn't like that description. Here's a playlist of just some of the fab tunes where she sang lead and backing vocals
Remembering Martin Hannett on his birthday. Today's listening is this playlist of his productions for the likes of Buzzcocks, Joy Division, ACR, Magazine, ESG, New Order, Durutti Column, OMD, Only Ones, U2, Pauline Murray and many more
This is something special - Dexys Midnight Runners performing "There, There, My Dear" on Swedish TV in Oct 1980. Watch the whole recording including "Geno" & "I Couldn't Help If I Tried" via the fab ScottishTeeVee archive here
Remembering Sandy Denny, born on this day in 1947. This recording of White Dress from 1975 is the only known studio footage of her with Fairport Convention. It lasts for just one beautiful minute
RIP Tom Verlaine. A true pioneer. Here he is inventing punk with Richard Hell and Billy Ficca in The Neon Boys way back in 1972 (before Richard Lloyd joined and they became Television)
Here are the best albums and singles of 1981, according to the writers at the NME. Arguably the best year ever for singles, which I've put in this playlist
Delighted to discover Sunderland's sound mirror hidden behind the VW garage in Fulwell. It was built around 1917 to detect Zeppelins after deadly airship attacks on the city in 1916. More info at

Rare photo of Joy Division’s last ever concert, taken by Mick Emerson at Birmingham University’s High Hall on 2 May 1980. It’s on show for the first time at the Ceremony: Pop Comes To Campus exhibition at the University’s Bramall Music Building

David Bowie's jacket is back on display at Bromley Central Library. He first wore it when performing with The Konrads in 1963/4, and he added the ink stripes when he joined The Riot Squad in 1967
Massive Attack released Blue Lines on this day in 1991. Here's a playlist featuring the brilliant LP along with the tracks that were sampled and covered in its making
Paul Weller and Stephen Morris joining Michael Rother, Hans Lampe and Franz Bargmann to perform E-Musik at last night's celebration of 50 years of Neu! How much talent can you cram on one stage?
