@IsaahMhlanga As you indicate in your piece the min wage was only introduced in 2019 and our rate of unemployment has been climbing fairly consistently from 1994 - so min wag is clearly not the source of the problem. Your position is just ideology - that workers should be exploited to the max.

My own view is that if the ANC leans into budget cuts, selling state assets and undermining the Minimum Wage in order to do a deal with the DA, then it has fundamentally misunderstood why it's losing support. The core of its actual support base is the precariat.

I think we must move away from framing transfers to SOEs as 'bailouts'. These entities are tasked with public functions and have incurred debt - often to the point of no longer being a going concern - in large part to try and meet these public obligations.

1/9 Reading the Report on the July 2021 'Unrest' - the most interesting aspect is actually what's missing from the questions asked. Presidency set out 19 queries all mainly focused on the Gov's response to the 'Unrest'. None appear to expressly look into the underlying causes.

It is really important to note that it is not a 7.5% increase. Depending on pay scale this is more like a 2.8% increase in current spending (it just involves converting the cash gratuity into pensionable salary). Even if it was 7.5% - civil servants are behind 2019 in real terms

We must roll Eskom and other SOEs like Transnet back into the fiscus. The notion of stand alone public 'enterprises' functioning on a payfor model has been tried and it has failed.

No, consecutive FinMins have abused the discretion to limit spending to such an extent that we now face an extreme social crisis. The fiscal cliff is just a notional concept, but the millions of abandoned SAns are real.
