Hi! Iโm Arin. I do talent brand social at Blizzard ๐ฎ
- I love games a lot.
- I'm cooler on LinkedIn.
- I post honest takes about my career experiences and learnings as a hobby.
- Iโm trying to open the curtains to the very closed-off world of gaming careers.
A year ago, I trended on here because people objectified me and called me a diversity hire.
This month, I got promoted and earned a third award for my work a year into my gaming career.
Spite is a powerful motivator, as it turns out!
Last year, I trended on here because people called me a diversity hire.
Unfortunately for all who contributed, that just meant I had to win as many industry awards as possible. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

Itโs hard to describe how much Overwatch has meant to me and helped me through some of the toughest times in my life.
Overwatch was the first FPS game that ever felt truly accessible to me.
Iโm a little biased but I think everyday should be

Women in Gaming:
You are not tokens or placeholders.
You are legitimate professionals who have earned your place in this competitive industry through hard work and talent.
Never let anyone tell you otherwise.
Good morning,

I will be hosting Life At Blizzard Trivia in the Inclusion Nexus at 12:45, right after opening ceremonies!
I'm so excited to meet everyone!
I've been chatting with recruiters throughout the gaming industry to find out why it's been a trend to see only Senior/Lead jobs open recently.
There are more layers than you might think.
๐งตHere's some transparency:

It took me 6 applications before Blizzard even gave me a screener call.
Breaking into the gaming industry isn't easy.
It takes hard work, dedication, and a lot of persistence. But don't let the challenges discourage you. Keep pushing and improving yourself, you'll get there.

Less than two years ago my job was doing marketing for a construction company where I was frequently told my ideas were a waste of time.
Please remember itโs not too late for you. ๐
I am safe and appreciate all the thoughtful messages I've received.
We lost some really wonderful people today. I'll be spending most of this weekend writing LinkedIn recommendations.
If you were wondering, the reason I take and share so many photos of myself at work is because I want other women to be able to see themselves working and thriving in the industry.
Even with limited visibility, women have ALWAYS made an impact in games.
Itโs December! Which means itโs a tough time for a lot of people (me included!)
Hereโs 10 small quests I give myself to feel a little better when things are not going good! ๐งต
Don't be afraid to apply to the gaming industry if you don't have experience.
Outside perspectives are a great vehicle for evolution.
A lack of experience can promise originality, fresh ideas, & the ability to see new avenues where more experienced minds see dead ends.
A certain out of context LinkedIn post is being used to discredit my love of games and accomplishments in the industry again, so I am bringing out 13 year old meโs very terrible Link costume.
I spent my entire allowance and made it all myself. Iโve always loved games.

If you want to get into games, do some ethical stalking on LinkedIn.
Find people who have the job title you want.
Look at their career trajectory, the jobs they had before, and the transferable skills they had in their previous positions. Use this to make a game plan for you.
I'm going to Australia!! ๐ฆ๐บ
My first international speaking engagement!! ๐ฅน

Women in gaming, let me remind you:
You belong here.
You are not a diversity hire.
You are not here to fill a quota.
You earned your place in this industry.
I've been chatting with recruiters throughout the gaming industry to provide transparency on why it's been a trend to see only Senior/Lead jobs open.
I'm writing about it but I need everyone to promise to be level-headed and not take it out on the messenger, okay? Promise?
Don't let the challenges of breaking into the gaming industry discourage you.
It took me 6 applications over 4 years to even get a screener call from Blizzard.
Keep trying, stay dedicated, and focus on improving yourself in the mean time.
When looking for jobs, there will always be a candidate who started earlier, came from a bigger company, or went to a better school.
โฆWho cares?
Only YOU can bring what you bring to the table. Donโt stop & wait years for someone to give you permission to feel qualified.
