Again, staggeringly short-term thinking. Normalising AI art in any way affects future creatives. This is not a sustainable argument either logically or ethically.
If you're going to boycott an independent film because of a generative AI graphic that appears for 3 seconds then you're going to have to explain to me again how your position is about protecting jobs.
In centuries to come historians will mark out the emergence of the Watchmen Toaster as the official point at which the Post-Parody Era of civilisation officially began.
Some Thoughts from me

on Toxic Fandom in British Comics – Or Why the UK Comics Industry is Right to Unshackle Itself from What Amounts to Comicsgate-Style Thinking.
Been looking at my reviewer's comp of
@zoethorogood
's IT'S LONELY AT THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH from
@ImageComics
and you know what...? It's a masterpiece. You remember that "language of comics" thing I'm always banging on about? This one's speaking it in a whole new dialect.
Important reminder that the first canonical appearance of Rorshach was actually in a November 1981 issue of JINTY. Naturally this is the only 'Before (or post) Watchmen' story that actually counts.
Facebook has reminded me that it’s a year since I first discovered the character Bollux in the classic STAR WARS newspaper strip. Why have Disney Plus not given us more Bollux? I demand some prime time Bollux from my streaming services.
When Marvel UK ran out of PLANET OF THE APES strips to reprint in the 1970s so reprinted Killraven/War of the Worlds comics instead, renamed Killraven "Apeslayer" and redrew ape heads on all the villains. Yes this really happened. Herb Trimpe covers (with substantial changes!).
Into horror comics? Strip for Me's digital A POCKET CHILLER series has some of the best experimental horror going from top names in indie and UK small press comics.
@brokenfrontier
reviews here: Recommended! One of my absolute faves of 2021.
@douglasnoble
Surprised that STAR WARS newspaper strip character Bollux never caught on. He doesn’t even have his own action figure. We need more Bollux in our lives. (Art by Alfredo Alcala).
Short thread. Anything NFT is indefensible but in this whole TCAF mess let's not also forget we're dealing with an artist who actually typed and tweeted the words "I don't enjoy amateur artists being given grand platforms."
One of the things I love about comics is that you don’t necessarily have to be a technically proficient artist to create a powerful or memorable comic. In fact sometimes an element of rawness makes the work all the more effective and empathetic.
This is where we’re at. The truth being repressed and gatekept for fear of upsetting an authoritarian and increasingly oppressive government and the vested interests that control it. We are truly living in terrifying times.
I think this will be a start of a thread of stuff I’ve read through that wasn’t necessarily for Broken Frontier coverage. First up Jeff Lemire, Emi Lenox, Jordie Bellaire & Steve Wands’ PLUTONA from Image. A genre comic that doesn’t neatly fit into any obvious genre.
Back in the 1970s a fiercely pro-union Odin took on the evil of capitalism, the ultimate super-villain, in the pages of THOR

. One for the “SJWs are ruining my childhood”/“keep politics out of super-hero comics” crowd for sure…
#comicsgateisahatemovement
Not sure where this thread will go but let’s see...
Okay something that has interested me in terms of UK small press comics over the last decade is what I think of as a kind of gentrification of the scene.
If you’re charging people hundreds of pounds for a place on a zine-making course it’s just possible you may have entirely missed the point of zine culture.

So currently in AI art comics news we have:
Accusations of AI art being used in comics from one of the Big Two publishers.
A major figure at the other refusing to condemn the use of AI art.
A blind eye being turned to the hosting of AI art comics on a digital comics platform.
If you’re now suddenly deeply concerned about social media bullying when you’ve never publicly said one single bloody word in condemnation of years of relentless ComicsG*te harassment of the marginalised I would genuinely ask you to consider and reflect on that.
I’ve just launched the “Blob Erotica” series on my Patreon!
No-one else was making erotic fan art of my comics, so I’m now drawing weird sexy pictures of all your favourite Webcomic Name characters.
Support my comics by reading smut 🌈✨
Not taking the exit poll to heart just yet until significant results are in. But if the worst does happen I’m still so lucky to be a peripheral part of a creative scene that embraces and values compassion, community and kindness. Be very proud of yourselves tonight chums.
Even if you don’t realise it, Arts Council England has played a vital role in bringing so many of your fave indie graphic novels to life, in funding some of your fave comics fairs and festivals, and in ensuring the viability of that exhibition you loved.
#NeverVoteConservative
The future existence of Arts Council England is to be considered as part of a government review into all arm's length bodies, which could see some bodies scrapped and which is also demanding savings are found from those that remain
As far as I'm concerned it's the "amateur" artists - the self-publishers, the online posters, those creating for the joy of creating - who are largely the people moving the comics medium forward by experimenting, pushing boundaries and interrogating the potential of the form.
Just blocked a reasonably well-known digital comics platform for retweeting part of JKR's recent vile misgendering tweet thread. Zero tolerance for transphobia at Broken Frontier. I mean it. Spread that poison and you'll never get one word of coverage from us again.
Short thread. In UK comics the small press and self-publishers are a huge part of our scene’s future. Their talents are there to be nurtured, supported, promoted and, yes, even championed. Thankfully most of our wonderful community understands this.
If I've learnt one thing from 15 years at
@brokenfrontier
it's that you should never underestimate how much a first review can mean to a debut comics self-publishing artist.
Not a hoax! Not a dream! Not an imaginary story! That time Captain Britain channelled the power of Kylie Minogue to save us all from the Hulk.
(From the UK’s 1992 MARVEL SUPER HEROES ANNUAL by Brian Williamson, Cam Smith and Louise Cassell).
If you were one of the many who got email-spammed by the AIComicBooks publisher yesterday fear not. I’ve replied to them on behalf of us all.

Emotional return to
@GoshComics
for the first time in three years. Can confirm it’s still there and it still sets the gold standard for quality comics shoppery.
Disappointed to see some really bad takes on striking workers on my feed over the last two days. First employers cause strikes not workers. Second it’s no one else’s business what striking workers do on strike days. They’re not being paid. Third show some solidarity.
Please stop referring to The Sun as “a comic”.
Comics as a form employs a sophisticated language built on empathy and consideration, utilising communicative tools that respect and value the reader’s intelligence.
The Sun... doesn’t.
So I promised you something a little self-indulgent at
@brokenfrontier
this week. My small press column 'Small Pressganged' celebrates its 10th birthday today!! Since 2011 I've reviewed over 1,000 small press comics and interviewed hundreds of creators.
Thanks to
@Schnumn

What's obviously worrying for us at Broken Frontier about the Facebook situation is all the traffic we will be losing. The 7 people out of the thousands who follow us there that the algorithm allows to see our posts will miss out. We could be losing literally 1s of link clicks.
So 5 years ago this week we relaunched
@brokenfrontier
(which has been around since 2002!) as a site primarily focusing on indie, alt & small press comics. So this is going to be my
#FiveYearsLater
thread for the next year looking back daily on some of the artists we've covered.
This
@guardian
Best Graphic Novels of 2023 list is so disappointing. Just four books (I'm not counting a twenty-year-old book) for 2023? There's a long-running joke that UK broadsheet coverage over the years has essentially been Cape's output...
Thread, I guess. I mourned the loss of Orbital two years ago because for me Orbital wasn't that physical space. It was that amazing team of staff who pretty much all disappeared unceremoniously in one fell swoop in 2019.
I don't often do angry on social media but a few days on that VICE article is still annoying me and I think the whole "who goes to VICE for their comics recommendations anyway?" argument is largely missing the point. Here's why...
This is the newsagent where I would pick up my weekly IPC comics when I was a kid. I would get up at 6am every Friday morning, wake up my Dad for my pocket money and then walk into town before school for my 2000 AD, TORNADO, ROY OF THE ROVERS, TIGER, CHEEKY and so on.
Absolutely blown away by the amazing new space for the
@Cartoonmuseumuk
! An absolute treasure trove of cartoon and comics art. Such an exciting development. Give them a follow to keep up to date with everything going on there.
Imagine being a young trans person and hearing your own Prime Minister denying your very existence in a desperate attempt to gain hate-fuelled votes. This is exactly why I will continue to call out transphobia, particularly those in comics who are sympathetic to bigots.

Okay, thread time. Lots of discussion of late as to why there are so few review/coverage sites left for UK small press/self-published comics. Here’s a DM example from the last 24 hours to one of our social media accounts on the subject of our reviews policy as to maybe why.
I was getting mildly annoyed by the boisterous teens on the quiet carriage but now that there’s a woman screaming at them that they shouldn’t be laughing and in high spirits because they should be in mourning I have changed sides.
You don't need to have an elaborate or intricate illustrative style to be an accomplished and empathetic cartoonist.
In comics the reality is that less really can be more, and often is.
This is a cool initiative from
@thevaultcomics
for
#Pride2022
. Too much cynical commodification in general of
#Pride
. So great to see a publisher doing something concrete here.
Another day where speaking out against transphobia appears to have won me a noticeable level of unfollows. Good. Transphobes are forbidden from enjoying Broken Frontier.
If you want to really enjoy the genius of Ken Reid’s FACEACHE (collected by
@britcomics
) you have to read it out loud doing all the different voices and the sound effects. Trust me... you’ll appreciate it like you never have before if you do.
One year ago today I took over as the new owner of
@brokenfrontier
. What a year it's been! Huge thanks to my patient and supportive team at BF. We'll continue to put collaboration, community, celebration and championing at the heart of what we do in 2018.
I look at

Had a dream last night that the Natural History Museum had employed me to curate an exhibition about the portrayal of dinosaurs in comics and now I think they absolutely should.
@metpoliceuk
You are an absolute disgrace. The sooner you are defunded, disbanded and replaced with a model that supports the community, rather than the far-right oppression of peaceful protest, the better. Shame on you.
We need to be more aware in the UK that comics hate movements are active here too. Whether we're comics commentators, event organisers or shops we all need to be checking submissions/applications and making sure we are not giving space to their toxicity.
#comicscommunity
One step in the right direction to seeing comics recognised as the sophisticated and valid art form that it is would be to stop using phrases like "nerd culture".
Apparently I should be more controversial. So I’m going to give it a go.
I don’t really have any problem with the term “graphic novel”.
I *really* liked the Sixth Doctor.
I have never read SAGA.
How am I doing? Are you all reeling?
45 years ago today the first episode of STRONTIUM DOG began in the pages of Starlord – read that first story for free, check out our brand new merch, and discover comics' best sci-fi Western
Everywhere around me there are great tottering piles of self-published comics and zines. I have several thousand from 2009 on (the New Golden Age of UK small press) including first work from so many artists who went on to great things. A uniquely extensive archive I imagine.
Marvel’s greatest experimental comic ever!
The Spider-Man and Hulk comic strip toilet paper from around 40 years ago. My brother was given a roll of this by someone as a Christmas present one year (!!) and I was insanely jealous.
Dec 2019 was my last comics fair/fest so I knew after not seeing anyone in person for two and a half years that
@SLCZF
would be overwhelming today. But it was overwhelming for all the right reasons. Thanks for all the love and kindness today everyone! It was so appreciated. xx
Hearing too much right now about small comics shops that are struggling. Please DM me about free advertising on

if that's the case for you. We can't afford to lose you!
Thank you *so* much to everyone who stopped me at
#SLCZF
today to say how much what we’re trying to do with
@brokenfrontier
means to them and how much they appreciate us taking a stand against anti-progressive elements in comics. The best thing to hear on an anxious day!
UK newspapers! Instead of starting the headline of every single article you write on comics with “Bam! Kapow!” how about experimenting with originality and using the seldom seen “Zlonk!” instead. Alternatively you could be really daring & just stop infantilising an entire medium.
Apparently Adam Ant is trending because it's his birthday which is a good opp to re-post some art from the 'The Fantastic Adventures of Adam Ant' strip from TOPS comic in the '80s. Unsure of artist sadly.

An exciting day for Broken Frontier today! Our first mention in the national press in this excellent piece by Hannah Berry
@streakofpith
in The i Newspaper. Are you following us at
@brokenfrontier
for all your indie and small press comics needs?
I had forgotten all about TOPS, a 1980s DC Thomson comic. Somebody sort out the rights and put out a collection of those bizarre Adam Ant comic strips... (no idea of creator credits I'm afraid).

Absolutely appalled to see Wales Millennium Centre

Hey, all! Just the friendliest of reminders that our

@neilhimself
has been at the forefront of a critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation of one of the most beloved comics ever but how many self-published comics with a 10-copy print run has he reviewed in 2022? ;-)
How we knew at school in the 1980s which teachers were Tories.
"How are you voting?"
(Labour-voting teachers): "Labour"
"How are you voting?"
(Tory-voting teachers): "That's between me and the ballot box."
No secret that BF is operating on an absolute skeleton crew right now and will be until some of the team are back from summer sabbaticals. So after
@SmallPressDay
I’m going to do something I’ve never done before. We’re going to shut shop for a week in August so I can have a break
Watching three comics adaptations on Prime/Netflix right now and while I'm enjoying them it's also a reminder that these stories were told so much better as comics because that was the medium that suited them best.
There should be a law against describing something as the country's biggest Comic Con when comics are only a tiny part of it. As far as I'm concerned if the vast majority of it isn't about the comics then it shouldn't count as a Comic Con.
Obvs I won't be exhibiting at Thought Bubble. But I will be there again for the first time in 5 years this autumn. So it's so exciting today to see all your exhibitor posts!
Can't wait to see so many people I haven't seen since 2019. I suspect it's going to be *very* emotional.
Thinking about Michael Fleisher’s work today and that final scene of HEX

is still one of the most powerfully understated and quietly macabre sequences in the history of mainstream comics. “Ah guess it means ah’ll be goin back home one day...after all” (Art by Giffen & Garzon)
Still trying to get my head round the idea of a feral pack of savage small press artists roaming the walkways of a big con and preying on unsuspecting staff.
“Reduced to the status of comics”? Utterly piss-poor journalism from the
@guardian
. Comics *are* cultural treasures. Maybe check out some of the examples at
@brokenfrontier
? Shocking that this kind of unrepentant ignorance still exists.
