In #Finland by law every student must have access to professional student support: 1 School Social Worker 1 Psychologist 1 Nurse 1 Visiting Doctor 1 Student Counsellor for every 750 pupils in a #school . My observation: it means teachers get to teach and students learn

In a #Finnish school of 500 students by law there are: 3 SEND Qualified to Masters Level Teachers (by law 1 for every 200 students). 1 Full-time counsellor 1 Part-time Psychotherapist 1 Part-time Social Worker 1 Part-time Nurse (all teachers are 1stAid)

I cried at a training I was leading today. Teacher came up to tell me how much it helped that I shared that I am an out Bisexual teacher 🏳️‍🌈 Had complaints about sharing this in the past, which have hurt But this is why I do it, still many scared LGBTQ+ staff in our schools😢

Ugh! Stressed parent contacted me saying she's being hassled by her school for not logging on properly every morning with her 4 year old.... How is this helping stressing our parents out? Tempted to tell her to turn her phone off, ignore and do some baking wit her child!

Heartbreaking. A high court order decided today that a pupil must be taken from their parents immediately+move from the county;most staff didn't get a chance to say goodbye. We didn't even know about the hearing until midday. Social Systems that are not joined up cause harm.

Year 11 student today: ‘Are you ok, Miss?’ I assured her I was fine + the dramatic exasperation is all part of the act. She said, ‘I just thought it was important to check.’ I had to blink a few tines before resuming the lesson. Teenagers can be amazing. #GCSEs2019

I met with an #SEND teacher today. Legally in #Finland there should be one #SEND teacher to every 200 pupils in a school - that's qualified to Masters level in Special Ed - not TAs - they're in addition. @asbooth @elly_chapple @vickie__jayne @MazzaSW @BehaviourA @taniachoud

For some of the pupils I work with they cannot automatically trust adults - their history has taught them that can be dangerous. This might affect how they treat you. (It's not personal) #behaviour #traumainformed

In a school I work regularly there are THREE 50yrs+ women in SLT running the show. I have never felt so inspired. I have found role models! Thinking of buying them a coffee over the hols and just asking lots and lots of questions #10 %braver @WomenEd

A plea to Heads next strikes; A TA I know, single parent had to be in school, yet wasn’t allowed to bring their child to school. They had to take a day’s unpaid leave- they earn less being a TA than if they worked in a supermarket. Please think @UKTAHub @Headteacherchat

@jillboard @TheRaDR Did this recently- the editor ( man) took time to explain this the fee structure for the dep and hence why it wouldn’t be higher at this time, then added ‘but I would definitely ask myself too’ Which felt like a success - I asked, was respected and no puppies died.

For some pupils I work with 'increased discipline' was what they experienced as abuse. It's unlikely to then work for them in ur classroom as a behaviour strategy or way to engage in learning. (in fact, it could do more harm) #behaviour #SEMH #traumainformed

@Positivteacha I got that feedback once. English. I asked HOD if they thought the world’s greatest writers’ notebooks were all immaculate and with no scribblings out? Another area where we expect arbitrary things from kids that aren’t focused on learning. If I can read+ mark it, I’m happy

Today wasn’t the easiest; it’s been a challenging couple of months, so today there was some sadness. But I am grateful for getting outdoors for our Xmas dinner-picnic with parents; and for the internet, which made it feel my bro was there a bit.
