Gabor Mate-it is neither ethical nor appropriate to tell someone for the first time,- in a public interview, that they have ADHD.
@DrGaborMate
It is for the individual to decide whether to disclose their Neurodiversity.
@SussexroyalU
Why
@BBCPanorama
did you choose to tell only half the story? Why did you ignore the historic, systemic inequity & inequality of access to NHS for 1 in 20 tax paying UK citizens living with ADHD? Is it any wonder desperate people were exploited?
@DHSCgovuk
Lewis Capaldi’s Glastonbury set displayed the best of the human spirit – and put disability centre-stage. “In his moment of triumph, his disabilities visible, the crowd loved him. If only society was always so accepting of difference”
@LewisCapaldi
We have had so many messages from children saying they are no longer embarrassed or ashamed to tell their friends they have ADHD & that they take medication to “Help me” - because they have heard about
@Simone_Biles
THANK YOU Simone - your example has helped so many children 👏👏
“As an NHS psychiatrist it is clear to me that the root of this issue is not overdiagnosis. Instead, we are facing the combined challenges of remedying decades of underdiagnosis and NHS services that were set up when there was little awareness of ADHD”

This poorly researched, unbalanced piece of TV journalism will do more harm than good.

chose a sensationalist angle, ignoring the context & reasons why desperate people resort to expensive private care because of inadequate & inequitable nhs services.

Dav Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD & dyslexia. He was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Dav loved to draw & make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own comics adventures of Dog Man & Captain Underpants.

It is a myth that children with ADHD are ‘badly behaved’. Developmental delay in impulse control, being forgetful, needing to ‘move’ & fidget is not the same as intentional inappropriate behaviour. 1 in 5 children are Neurodiverse - they account for 7 out 10 exclusions.
#HolocaustRemembranceDay
A timely reminder of the perils of a eugenicist ideology that some human beings are inferior to others. In memory of our Jewish brothers & sisters, the elderly, the sick, disabled, those with learning differences, Romany & people of colour. Speak out.
Not everyone needs medication but even for those that do, ‘Pills don’t teach skills’ so we recommend healthy lifestyles & adhd friendly learning strategies & developing executive functioning skills. This is particularly important for teenagers
The shift from a deficit model to a strength based paradigm, requires celebrating Neurodiversity. Many successful public figures have ADHD, Autism Dyslexia Dyspraxia etc.

Neurodiversity - recognising that if 1 in 5 human beings have either ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Dyscalculia - means we can not be ‘errors of genetics’. We are not ‘disordered’ we are different. We are human. We are intelligent. “We Belong”☂️

This isn’t a criticism of hard working dedicated teachers of our children. It’s a reflection on an educational paradigm that hasn’t adapted sufficiently to a rapidly changing technology driven world where many do not believe they are psychologically safe & prepared for adulthood.
ADHD is not a mental illness. It is not a ‘behavioural’ disorder - it is a neurodevelopmental condition ( DSM5 & ICD10) It impairs some aspects of learning and is not indicative of low intelligence or ability - on the contrary it can be evident in genius - Leonardo da Vinci
Neurodevelopmental conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia ( DCD) and dyscalculia all frequently co- exist & in some ways overlap with ADHD - ‘Labels’ help us identify these natural variations in neurocognitive capacity -they are a lens not a deficit stereotype☂️
We share concerns schools are now primary referrers for assessments,-only because, teachers are still not trained to identify ADHD &the imperative for a referral is invariably the enduring myth that ADHD=disruptive behaviours & capping how many pupils are ‘allowed’ to be ‘SEND’
“ I have ADHD and I am very Proud”
It’s about time we reframed ADHD; dispense with the stereotypes and stigma and started to ‘enable’ children to play to their strengths & intelligence and give them the opportunties, health services & education they deserve ☂️
October is ADHD Awareness Month. To think of ADHD only as poor concentration, impulsiveness or hyperactivity is to trivialise what can be a very debilitating difference in Neuro cognitive capacity. Identified early, treated & educated how to manage it can transform & ‘enable’☂️
26-27% of those with a primary diagnosis of ADHD also have autism and between 50-60% of those with a primary diagnosis of autism have secondary ADHD - this briefly explains the difference
@SpaceHerts

If 1 in 5 of us are Neurodiverse / neurodivergent, there must be an evolutionary purpose why 20% of the human race have ‘different minds’ - & therefore can not all be described as errors of genetics or ‘disordered’. This doesn’t deny the challenges but calls for a new paradigm.☂️

This! ☂️ ‘Behaviour is not a special need -it’s a human response. There is no ‘diagnosis’ called behaviour. Behaviour is communication & it is not always ‘chosen’ by children -it is a response and expression of something we need to understand to change
We are pleased to announce on Tuesday 8th May a range of resources for schools to download including assemblies, lessons plans and information on how schools can celebrate the intelligence, ability & employability of children with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia
We are calling on every UK school to celebrate Neurodiversity throughly May by staging an assembly celebrating the intelligence & ability of every child with dyslexia, dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, ADHD & Autism + free resources!
Neurodiversity is about the 1 in 5 people with neurological differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD & autism. 1 in 5 who science now tells us are creative & entrepreneurial - not errors of genetics. The Umbrella Project returns in 2019
UK CHILDREN WAIT…16 months to 5 years for ADHD & autism screening. Experts said “inhumane” waits put a generation of neurodiverse children at risk of mental illness as they are “pushed to the back of a long queue” for child mental health services (Camhs).
ADHD is not a behavioural disorder - why we need a public health campaign & better teacher training to ensure children are not harmed or fail in education because of ensuring myths & stigma. ADHD affects 1 in 20. Isn’t it time we did something about it?
Echoing Sir Ken Robinson’s quote that transforming education does not mean ‘standardisation’ but rather ‘personalisation’ -an educational paradigm fit for the 21st century. 21st century children, 21st Century Society, 21st Century Citizenship & 21st Century economy demands it..☂️
#Neurodiversity
☂️ would Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Mozart, Alexander Graham Bell, Eleanor Roosevelt, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Stephen Spielberg, Thomas Edison, & countless other genius talents…. have thrived & achieved in our schools today-or would they have been excluded?
Don’t dismiss ADHD as simply hyperactivity, poor concentration & impulsivity-to do so is to trivialise what can be very debilitating. Unmanaged it’s impact can be ‘disabling’. Please take this issue seriously. It affects 1 in 20 to varying degrees. We all know someone with ADHD
It’s no wonder over 30% of entrepreneurs, executives & leaders are ADHD& that ADHD Uni Graduates are twice as likely to start their own business. Who said ADHD means low ability, unemployable or disabled? Not the young people with ADHD who have teachers who believe in them
#ADHD
Why in our education system do we see Neurodiversity through a lens of “what you can’t do” rather than what you can? Why do we mistakenly assume children with dyslexia, ADHD, etc are ‘less able’ - ‘less intelligent? What exactly are we measuring? ☂️
