Scoop: A lawsuit has been filed against
@GovRonDeSantis
after he appointed 3 board members to the GRU Authority who don’t live within city limits as the law requires.
Scoop:
@GovRonDeSantis
appointed 3 of the 5 members to the new GRU board that strips away Gainesville's century-long control of its utility. Not one lives within city limits, as required by law.
Some personal news: This is my last week as editor for The Gainesville Sun. I’ve cherish this role greatly and all those I’ve worked with along my 10-yr career but was given an opportunity too good to pass up that will allow me to better provide for my kids.
Hey Fest attendees!
Here are the details for the Key to the City presentation for
@LauraJaneGrace
🥳
Friday will be proclaimed Laura Jane Grace Day in Gainesville. Rad.
Gainesville’s own
@LessThanJake
took the main stage at the final
@VansWarpedTour
in Tampa and people went nuts. LTJ has played 439 (?) shows at Warped Tour, more than any other band.
Update: The only Gainesville resident told me they weren’t among the list of original applicants. It seems they were recruited to join the board AFTER we reported the first 3 lived outside city limits and the Gov’s office scrambled to find qualified Republican city residents.
Like many Gannett newsrooms, the Gainesville Sun was also hit pretty hard by layoffs today. It’s a rough day. Can’t say enough about the wonderful team I’ve worked with since coming here, especially those leaving us. Please support local journalism.
I will be leaving
@GainesvilleSun
at the end of next week and will transition to
@thestate
in Columbia, SC. I’d like to thank all my coworkers for being amazing! I’ve absolutely loved my time here. Also, big ups to all the sources that took my many calls.✌️
Gators QB Jalen Kitna has been arrested by Gainesville police after they say he shared child sex abuse images from his Discord account. Police executed the search warrant today and took his electronic devices.
Just one day after being appointed, the governor's office confirmed to The Sun that one of the GRU Authority board members resigned. The member was not in city limits or a GRU electric customer, as required.
Alachua County's school superintendent publicly denied The Sun's reporting that he brought a Bible into a meeting and referenced scripture to accuse people of backstabbing him.
Facing legal action from the paper, the district now admits it happened.
This week marks my final few days working with the amazing team at The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. I'll be forever grateful to those who welcomed and helped me navigate a new state in the midst of a pandemic. I'll miss this place and its people more than you'll know.
While some may argue this isn’t a big deal, the law is clear. In 2021, he removed an Alachua County School Board member for living a few hundred feet outside her district. Last year, a county commissioner resigned out of fear of removal for living across town.
THREAD: Some SC lawmakers argue that “hidden earmarks” aren’t really hidden and that anyone can find and see them. Well, we spent more than a year and went back 5 years on these payouts and still don’t know who half the lawmakers are that directed payments to pet projects.
Today was my last day at
@GainesvilleSun
. Of course, I’m here late, but there’s some solid news stories coming soon. Be sure to check out the paper this weekend.✌️
Thank you to the
@FLPressClub
for an another awesome evening. Good to see old friends and the great work of so many talented journalists be recognized in such trying times.
Students coming to the University of Florida over the last decade have been overcharged and steered into a freshman orientation program that generated millions of dollars for UF when cheaper options could have been available.
I will be joining the communications department for Alachua County. That’s right, the Gov’ment baby! That’s not to say I won’t still be writing news & local happenings, including Fest! I like to think of it as the county investing resources into “local public news.”

Over the past year, The State newspaper has reported how Sen. Jackson has helped steer millions in taxpayer $$ over the years to his church and its nonprofit, where he’s pastor and board member. Some of that money was unaccounted for and spent on ways other than intended.
Sen. Darrell Jackson proposed taking away a sales tax exemption for newspaper’s not based in the state of South Carolina, referring to a newspaper that recently moved its printing operations to Charlotte.
This would not impact the Post and Courier.

Following the primary races in Alachua County, FL tonight. Couldn’t help but notice what a historic night it is for that region, regardless of your politics.
Allow me to briefly explain:
Another round of layoffs at GateHouse papers today ...
Can’t stress enough to people (and GH) the importance of investing and supporting local journalism.
Floridians: Anything lower than a Cat 4 hurricane calls for a party.
Also Floridians: It’s going to rain and be 30 degrees! Stay off the roads, indoors and cancel school! 😱
Happy to announce (for the second year in a row) that I’ve placed 3rd for Gatehouse’s Beat Reporter of the Year. Props to Brad McClenny placing 3rd for Videographer of the Year and to our awesome staff at
@GainesvilleSun
for placing 3rd in Newspaper of the Year!

Columbia's 29203 ZIP code has one of the Deep South's highest rates of diabetic amputations. The State examines what makes it medically dangerous for diabetics and what can be done to better serve them. Stay tuned for the full project, Cut Off, publishing Thursday.
I wanna give props again to all the brave reporters covering these protests, and not just those working for
@thestate

Extremely honored and humbled to have our project “Cut Off” receive a

Thank you to
@SCPressAssoc
for recognizing our team’s work on hidden earmarks last year. I had to send in over 70 FOI requests so that
@Lucasgsl6
and I could build a first of its kind database of these projects, going back 5 years, to show where $100M of taxpayer money was spent.
Single-family zoning is no more in Gainesville after a split commission vote. The city is the first in Florida to do away with the zoning classification.
This article was the result of months of digging through hundreds of documents. It shows how a behind-the-scenes GOP operative used shadowy tactics to help elect dozens of candidates to office, including 15 of Florida’s 23 Republican state senators.
Under existing SC laws, the payments are completely legal, despite being cloaked in secrecy & its lack of accountability.
It really shouldn’t take a team of reporters in a yearlong effort to show taxpayers how their money is being spent — in some cases we can’t. But here we are
After successfully keeping its presidential search entirely in the dark, UF has finally released its candidate list for who will succeed Kent Fuchs:
Republican Sen. Ben Sasse.
That’s it. That’s the list.
In Columbia’s 29203 ZIP code live are a group of resilient survivors who are doing their best to navigate a system where the odds are stacked against them.
It didn’t have to be this way.
Please support your local paper. This can be done by simply subscribing. Specifically, I hope people in Gainesville/Alachu County area support the

Thank you

. Very honored to have won 1st place in the Government News category.☺️ And congrats to my pal
@cindyswirko
for taking home 1st in Breaking News! Nice pair of awards for the

One of my favorite things about Gainesville is
@thefestfl
. Even cooler is how we get to put bands like
@HotWaterMusic
and
@theflatliners
on the front page of the newspaper. These fronts are from our 2017 coverage.
The University of a South Carolina has failed to turn over public records that I requested 11 months ago which could shed light on how the school received preferential treatment from the county, among other documents.
We’re suing them.
I was fortunate enough to chat with
@LauraJaneGrace
before she embarks on another U.S. tour, which includes SIX Florida shows. The rockstar spoke candidly about the influence Tom Petty has had on her career, Ron DeSantis, and her biggest life regret.
Excuse my language, but just a lesson for those entering or in the PR world and making pitches to legitimate news outlets, don’t ever send us shit like this.
I’ll be honest, I was extremely skeptical about
@SensesFail
re-releasing their first EP, because why wouldn’t I be. But holy cow! Can’t wait to see this played live. 🔥💀
At least $5.5 million has steadily flowed to a nonprofit arm of a church where a lawmaker is the senior pastor. Some of the money was used to help the church negotiate a land deal, while more is unaccounted for. Where’d it go? (Part 1)
As a projects reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., I’ll be doing deep dives into a host of topics affecting the region and state. Please send me your news tips and any topics you think are worth exploring.
