interested in CS, AI, intellectual history, epistemology, literature, pretentious movies, and finding friends to live in a low-cost spanish villa with me
When I read shit like this I can't help but think that everything that slowed life down made every act more meaningful. So the worst thing about the 90s was waiting in lines at the cinema to get a seat? That sounds like a very nice experience to have in fact
Twitter is the closest thing we have to a truly egalitarian society, where a Yale professor will feel compelled to prove himself to a 12 follower account. Don't ever feel like your comments won't matter or you're too small to make a difference. You, too, can make a professor cry
i have to consider that not getting laid/not having a girlfriend is simply my revealed preference; even though i want it, i apparently don't want it enough to bear the costs/risks that attempting to achieve it would entail.
extremely arrogant, but it's so frustrating to talk to someone who is def not stupid, but also like 10 memetic stages and irony levels behind you
like, even if you're right, you're being so basic and i don't know how to convey that i only agree from a more advanced position! smh
@parlance_common
The mindset behind the tweet is that everything that stands between you and instant gratification is a burden and a hindrance. Thinking about life in such a way will naturally depress you, since life consists largely of such intermediary periods
"everyone gets everything he wants" it's not universally applicable, but sometimes you should ponder that your life might be the way it is because you want it to be that way and that what you bemoan is secretly your preferred state of life under your current staple of options

German students go to BLM protests while living in an area that is 90% Arabs and Turks and warn me of not being outside in the night because I will get knifed
someone phrased it like this once and it took a few weeks for it to really sink in, but it seems dead on to me now: maybe a really big part of the issue is just lack of sufficient desire, as paradoxical as that seems to me. if i was really horny enough, i'd figure out how to act
@eigenrobot
as a civilization we are badly in need of figuring out how to institute 'The Talk', aimed at bright young people who will presumably go on to enter elite positions in society, and it needs to happen discreetly, tactfully and somehow privately
@Progrockfarmer
All german woke people tweet in a very ugly combination of English and German. They even talk to each other in English. There are no german equivalents to all the woke words so they just use them without translating them
It's a nice tell for who's social media socialized
but what would unmediated/"free" wanting even look like? this constricted world is all you have. if you don't make the choices in this world, you can never make them in another one. either you want it enough to do it in this world, or you don't want it.
the counterargument would be that this requires a very odd definition of "want", where despite the constrictions of the world in which you make your choices, you can still infer from those choices that this is "what you wanted", since after all "you chose it"
First update on the russian girl situation: when she saw me in class this morning she said "[(my) naaaaaaaame]" while waving to me in an exaggerated way. Another girl that was sitting next to me asked her "what's going on with you?"
partly i find myself deeply suspicious of people who haven't gone through this experience. there's a massive difference in how you relate to your "beliefs" and "opinions" before and after you've had your worldview utterly shattered
if you have been sucked into an epistemic black hole - an ideology, conspiracy theory, some variety of all explanatory, unfalsifiable worldview - and escaped
you either get immediately sucked into another one
or you ascend a meta-level and become aware of their existence
I think my biggest problem in life is that I'm too afraid of everything (produced by being uncertain of outcomes, too hyper-aware of worst-case scenarios?):
Too scared to drive a car, too scared to talk to girls
@TheAgeofShoddy
Predicting that somebody will be fired because they liked some problematic tweets on their alt and didn't think twice before revealing it
@knrd_z
good point. i had put "studying math instead of socializing more" and "not asking someone out that i like" into the same mental bucket, but it's better to keep those somewhat seperate
@hyperboreandoom
it's the cost/risk of "attempting to get it and failing", i.e. obviously stuff like getting rejected, making future interactions with that person awkward etc.
but also simply the time you have to sink into (online) dating has an opportunity cost
[2023] Progress in artificial intelligence came to a complete halt for a year because researchers were distracted by feeding "woman with three titties" prompts into DALL-E 3 (supports video generation)
@eigenrobot
Wasn't there something in "Stoner" about some minor dispute between two professors where faculty split into two factions and the new generations of academics also had to sort themselves into one of the factions even though they didn't know what the original dispute was even about
is there a book aimed at laymen that explains all the physics related to infrastructure (so especially electricity) from the ground up, that i can read on the side, assuming no prior knowledge from school?
one of the great regrets of my life is that i cared so little about STEM when i was in school, especially physics
i want to understand how the world's infrastructure works, but i don't even know what energy, power, electricity, work, force, voltage, potential, current etc is
Two times seems about right, i think that's also the point where i acquired some zen-like equanimity about my relationship to Ideologies and a healthy distance from totalizing Belief
@VividVoid_
@SurenVynn
yeah i think the way i put it is
the first time your meaning system collapses you think "oh i got it wrong" and find a new system
the SECOND time it collapses you go "wait what the is meaning systemz"
i think tpot is overrepresented in those who've been through the second one
@browserdotsys
"historians have traced the origin of the Great Schism of 2023 as originating in a heated debate around train policy in Bangladesh, although the exact positions cannot be reconstructed from the historical record"
@sympatheticopp
two ways of interacting with stories: male lore memorization vs. female relating things to your life
I haven't totally thought this classification through
Wrong tweet went viral. I was actually proud for coming up with the Mao joke, but instead the low effort reddit screenshot goes viral and gets more likes than all of my other tweets combined
i'm gonna deactivate tomorrow again, there's really nothing that keeps me here. my real life is 100x more compelling
i have 10+ great friends within walking distance who are all fascinating to converse with, a book club with them & endless amounts of cool math and CS to learn

if you make a once normal position politically incorrect to hold, then only politically incorrect people will defend the position. Thus a once normal position will only be represented by people who are naturally disagreeable (and often rude)
do i gotta go for 100% linen or linen-blend, like these?
i think i can't really wear white, my skin's so pale it just looks weird, especially if it's sorta translucent
Ought to buy more preppy clothes for the summer. Need to fool everyone into thinking i was born at least two cultural classes higher than i actually was
@rainforbrunch
hmm my issue is different, i develop crushes all the time immediately, am always attracted to several women at once, but apparently never enough to do anything substanstive about it, preferring to keep my distance where the risk and rewards are both low but i get to keep my crush
@Outsideness
Everything is a psyop! Everything was planned in an elaborate conspiracy that spans decades! Nothing in history is the result of circumstances and social forces that are beyond the control of individual people! Only I am cool and esoteric enough to know all this!
Due to the recent unprecedented, brutal actions by Russia (the russian girl hasn't talked to me today), the Germans are gonna retaliate with a package of massive sanctions (I'm not gonna talk to her tomorrow)
Russian girl explains to her: "Yesterday I forgot to wave him goodbye. He was standing on the other side of the train track. I texted him after that because I felt so bad. [I interject: "you poor thing!"] So then he told me to wave him goodbye this morning"
Other girl laughs
@metakuna
well yes, it's kind of a gag since i'm using "revealed preference" to produce an absurd sentence, but i think it's a useful frame, bc it forces you to think about why you choose to act the way you do and what cost benefit calculations you're implicitly making in your decisions
anyone got a hack on how to become more outgoing?
i think i've cleared all reasonable thresholds concerning looks at this point, so all that's left to fix is "just" my personality
@acczibit
The long-term effect of the internet to this new generation who completely grew up inside these irony-level-7 online spaces is gonna be really interesting and terrifying. People are like "you're exaggeriting, the internet is not dangerous", but it clearly shapes young people
@acczibit
Would be funny if every other country with an ascendant right-wing also had their own internal (slightly different) GamerGate event. Hungarian cricket fans bullying Hungarian cricket journalists or whatever
i thought people were wildly exaggerating about this, but you can be just an average looking white guy and there'll be some chinese woman who will treat you like you're literally a god.
this date was honestly the weirdest experience of my entire life so far
@towheretobegin
i'm not sure we're thinking about the same scenarios. it's not a gap that can be bridged by mental effort. more conretely, it's like you have this mild, old take, but i have this counter-counter hot take that ends up at the same place but through more convoluted means
"let a thousand flowers bloom", commonly misunderstood as metaphor for allowing intellectual diversity, was in fact a veiled campaign by mao to liquidate allergy sufferers as a class
As a european, the peculiarities of how the US-GDP-growth maximization-machine is greased with prescription drugs can be mysterious at times
What behaviours do you think are emblematic of 'adderall culture'?
@eigenrobot
i'd assume for many people it's just the default way to spend their time. afaict my father mostly spends his after work hours with scrolling social media on his phone while switching between different tv channels. the constant barrage of input is enough to please the mind
math is easier when not trying to "read" the formal math because no mathematician actually thinks like that, the formalism is just a precise language used for communication
instead try to grokk what intuition they're presumably expressing and check if the formalism confirms that
turns out the best strategy of learning math for me is a totally wordcel one:
i write giant blocks of text where i describe what's happening in imprecise, informal language
In personal news, some weeks ago I made the decision to abandon my current career path, because it was already making me depressed, and instead start studying Computer Science in the fall
I know many ppl here have studied CS/work in tech, is there *any* advice you would give me?
today my friend and i did a first dating app photo session
this is probably gonna end up with us having the exact same photos in the exact same locations with the exact same poses lmao
Why did I let genetically engineered bacteria colonize my mouth yesterday? Not because I did the research.
Who has time for that?
I did it because Scott Alexander told me to.
