This is the hardest parting I’ve done in a decade. Just said goodbye to the family, & my kids & I are crying in the car. Generation after generation of this, less & less chance of us going back to Lebanon for good. I’d be furious, but my eyes & heart hurt too much right now.

Just learnt that Abu Naji passed away. My Beirut mornings always started with a coffee from Abu Naji’s (with condensed milk). Entire generations of university students knew him & his kindness. So much these days feels like an ending. Rest, & thank you ☕️

This poem from “Louder than Hearts” keeps popping up on Arabs’ timelines & I love it. There’s a story of it having facilitated a couple’s going back together after a breakup. I mean what more can I ask? I’m a khattabeh! The book is 3 years old. & you can still order it 😉

Been feeling sad & tired all day & couldn’t tell why. Then I remembered the date. On August 21, 2013, my cousin was shot in Tripoli. On August 23, 2013, the Salam & Taqwa mosques exploded. The body REMEMBERS. 2 poems for him & my aunt & the city from Louder than Hearts:

I feel heartbroken and enraged for everyone in Lebanon, but especially for our parents’ generation, who went through the hell of raising us during the civil war. I don’t know how much more they can take. Or how much we can. But apparently, we have to. Fuck this.

I wanted to say death by country, burial by sea, but no, what happened in Tripoli is murder by government. Twice, endless. People are killed a thousand times a day in their country, & then they are killed if they try to escape it on a small boat in an open sea. #tripoli #lebanon
