Most practicing full-time artists are from scandalously Rich families, or are married to someone who is rich/well employed. Very few actually earn their own lifestyle.
I got invited to give a keynote next year at a major tech conference and declined, they wrote back with a sudo plea and I'm considering agreeing with the stipulation I can be 100% no bullshit about the state of this sector and also wear this shirt, discuss:
How to support artist 101:
1) buy their work while they are still living, dead artist can't use it
2) no money? tweet and social media it
3) buy them a meal, coffee, cab home
4) established? Mentor 2 for every 1 person that helped you
5) show up for openings

I got in a lot of trouble because I requested ice cream for every meal during inpatient and said “if I’m going to be forced to gain a lot of weight, I might as well enjoy it”

unfortunately those of us who do, have to typically work multiple side hussles to keep afloat, managing cash flow is key when invoices take 3-12+ months to be paid/paid back etc
I wish someone would host art residencies that are accessible for people who have commitments outside their practice. stop disqualifying people based on their work/life/financial realities. if you want to make things inclusive, stop making residencies exclusive.

all I can think about today is the artist last night on clubhouse who when a curator kept demanding to hear the artist speak, she just got on and said 'none of us have any capacity left to perform 24/7" and then left the room..
If I found some factory in Guangdong to make some limited run of like yeezy nike whatever GAN sneakers generated from a training set that was like all fantasy wear and grey market yupoo sellers-- would anyone buy them? or is that like way to niche meta repfam of me?
the asymmetry between an artist who produces and fabricates solo being compared and expected to compete with artist who have studio staffs of 10-100 employees is something I think about a lot.
Would it be helpful for anyone if I did a high level technical and social overview of all the different NFT directions and platforms and what’s dipping baby pandas in oil and what the alternatives are? My DMs are out of control.

there are a few artist who constantly get major exhibitions and solo's at museums and I never understood why until I realized they were best friends with the director and/or married to them.
really having issues with these artist QA where the artist talks about not worrying if things sell or not, not producing for months etc, while they omit the part that their partner/parents/ex-spouse who happens to be a famous actor, have a job in tech etc- pays the rent.

there are a few books I can recommend with insights that are either super depressing or super enlightening or maybe both ..artsy is usually a circle jerk but this article is a good start:

yeah, a lot of people, myself included, have gallery representation, get awards/grants/massive commissions because they happen to be friends or know the right people..
@HouseofCards
was/is about politics/networks etc but it could of also been about art just as well.
now is maybe a good time to tell you all that sometime in early covid 2020 I was in conference calls for 12-15 hours a day and started to make video art during the calls, then I forgot about them all but found a bunch today..
Trying to articulate to someone who has loads of money, that you super depend on them paying you on time, everytime, some comically small amount is so demoralizing
nothing is more depressing than when you realize an artist is actually backed by 'a team of 64' when you thought it was just 1-2 people the whole time making it all . .
Honorary Mentions are for Samoa Rémy (Switzerland), Addie Wagenknecht (Austria), Nathan Witt (UK), and Barcelona-based artist Gabriella Torres from Puerto Rico. They will be taking part in the

Let's take a closer look at the announcement right here 🧵👇
whoever curated the exhibition at grand palais on 'artist and robots' should be fired. You have 36 artist and 3 are women or poc? come on. its 2018. that is not what the future looks like.
something weird about the art world is how one of your friends live in their van and your other friend makes 6++ figures like nbd and you have 5$ in checking but stay in 5 star hotels/fly first class on collector's coin and you’re all making the same art.

idk a lot of peers have crazy generational wealth but fail to ever disclose they have like half of the 3M fortune that allows them to larp as full time artist.. tbh I believe it’s a disservice to everyone around you trying desperately to make it to not disclose your already set.
HUMBRAG ALERT: just want to let all the haters know that $algo just had the largest on-chain vote in history with 52k governor accounts - 1.8Bn Algo committed and that was only our first governance period.

Major museum to every artist ever:
“Please fill out the 20 pages of forms, provide us with 4 copies of your certificate of US tax residence, 3 copies of your photo ID so we may send you a $150 artist fee in 6-9 working months.“
Do we just want to speculate on everything or do we want a future where the underlying infrastructure is more important than the speculative value we give it?
