Congratulations to
@VermontGreenFC
on their win in their opening match in the U.S. Open Cup — the first time the tournament has ever been played in Vermont.
To the team, on and off the field, you make our whole state proud.
I want to be very, very, VERY clear on this. We've read the Open Cup rules. A LOT.
US Soccer has ZERO, and I mean ZERO restrictions on the roster that MLS teams can put out in an Open Cup game. None whatsoever.
If a roster is league legal, it is Open Cup legal. Period.
If player development is the true aim here,
#MLS
can work with U.S. Soccer (and MLSPA, as appropriate) as necessary on roster rules to ensure MLS Next Pro players can appear in the Open Cup. Teams can make their own decisions on how to prioritize as they always have.
Let us repeat again: Wrexham is cool! We’re all big fans of the show. But freaking hell is it disappointing to see Rob go on TV and speak multiple sentences about what’s awesome about a cup competition and then say there’s nothing like it in America! That’s face palm inducing!
UNOFFICIAL:
@elfarolito_npsl
will win $25,000 as the furthest advancing Open Division team, after applying tiebreakers. It came down to GOALS SCORED between El Farolito and Miami United. Congratulations to the team there! They sure took our hearts this past months.
#USOC2024
It has been 77 days without any official
@opencup
news. Based on our understanding and sources, we believe that will be ending very soon.
No matter what is decided on, make no mistake, we at The Cup dot us will put 110% into
#USOC2024
just as we have for the past 21 years.
We did the research and confirmed that Sigi Schmid, who recently passed away, is the greatest coach in the 105-year history of the
@USOpenCup
. We confirmed every coach to lift the trophy and Schmid is the only coach to win 5 tournament titles.
FULL STORY:
With half of the 8 MLS teams that got the triple bye to this round going one and done, it's time to rip this band-aid off. Every MLS team should enter into a Round of 64, then face a lower division team (on the road if possible).

Congrats to
@ATLUTD
and their fans. 41,012 is the announced attendance which SMASHES the *all-time* attendance record for the tournament. In the 105 years of the

MLS typically advances in 75-80% of their matches vs. lower divisions. When you’re a part of the 20-25% that don’t, this is probably the opposite of what you should say after.
Any other coach in American sports would be crucified for this.
“It’s a second division. It’s not even close.”
Houston Dynamo coach Ben Olsen got spicy talking about USL Championship vs. MLS after the Open Cup loss to Detroit City.

There are 22,423 people in St. Louis tonight. Not only is that a record for Round 3, breaking the previous record of 20,376 by the Rapids in 1999 (which has a * behind it)
This is now the 10th biggest crowd EVER in
@opencup
Modern Era history.
#USOC2023
And with that, 6/9 American MLS teams in
@TheChampions
are eliminated before
#USOC2024
even kicks off, and 8 weeks before they would have played. (Round of 32 May 7-8)
Only Houston out of that group will still play in the
@opencup
this year.
All but 1 of the 9 American MLS teams in
@TheChampions
have been eliminated, and the original entry date for those clubs would have been in the Round of 32 scheduled for May 7-8.
COMMENTARY: MLS' attempt to ruin the
@opencup
has been thwarted for now. But their points as to why they made this decision don't make a lot of sense when you look at the facts.

Gonna tell you right now, Dan, that's a common sentiment from MLS teams after losing in the Open Cup in any round, and especially to lower league opposition. US Open Cup matters until you lose, then it doesn't matter. Funny how that works.
I'm being told by my soccer sources that this USOC is basically an exhibition game. It does not count in the standings. The loons did not play all their starters. So yes, bad loss but not sure it's calamitous. I'll open it up for discussion though.
The NCAA Tournament has the magic formula — just like the FA Cup: It’s the promise of hope for everyone, no matter the size or $$$ of your program.
Without the Oakland and FDU’s, the tournament doesn’t work.

“Historic tournaments” that no one gives a damn about.
Prioritize Leagues Cup. I hope it’s so successful the entire world is watching every second and they burn a USOC flag at midfield before every match just so losers like you can cry about it.

MLS roster rules don’t allow teams to play academy players on the first team without an MLS contract. It’s not like England in that way where youth players don’t count against first team registration limits. MLS would have to change longstanding roster rules to make this work.
Congratulations to
@TTownSoccer
who will win the $25,000 prize as the furthest advancing Open Division team.
#USOC2023
While they did go just as far as Chicago House AC, the first applicable tiebreaker is number of wins over a team 2 divisions higher than them.
yeah, prioritize the historic tournaments, not the money cash grabs. Your teams and your supporter groups deserve it.
MLS had full managing control of US Open Cup for a bit and didn't do much with it unlike USSF who is doing more with it again.

If a player plays in the QUALIFYING ROUNDS in the fall for an AMATEUR TEAM, then signs for a PROFESSIONAL TEAM, they will NOT be cup tied to the team they played for in the fall and can play in the competition proper for the pro team.
One problem with “schedule congestion”
Based on the schedules for both
@TheChampions
and
@opencup
, there would only be 4 remaining teams in CCC by the time a single MLS team enters the Open Cup.
And how often has there been even multiple MLS teams in a CCC Semifinal round?

Only a MLS nerd would come up with an unreadable mess of a thread to make sense of what billionaires want to do and then conclude to eliminate the one historical soccer tournament we have in this country.
Y'all are weirdos sometimes.
I’m begging
@MLS

Another bit of misinformation out there yesterday that we should clear up. No, US Soccer does not take 50% of a cut of the gate from each match. Here is the complete form from last year.
In short: It's a flat fee charged and then a % of net ticket revenue minus a deductible. ⬇️
We just had an entire round where all 17 MLS teams played lower league. What more do you want? This is the exact same number of MLS teams in the Round of 32 as 2019, but now we had a whole round of great David vs. Goliath matches first. It worked out great.

We do have one fact check on this.
He was wrong about implying that a lot of other countries allow both a first team and an affiliated reserve team. That is actually rare to see today, the largest country we could find that still does that in their domestic cup is Poland.
Everything Nelson said about improving the Open Cup is true.
But MLS needs to step up and be a better partner. So does the USL. Use your media deals to make the broadcasts better. Get more financially involved.
Fix the game together.
