Joe Torre in 1982…a bunch fans fell onto the field going after a fair ball in the corner. Umpires talked & decided where to place the runners. Torre disagreed…lots of profanity.
It amazes me how many people feel Fred McGriff isn’t a HOFer. Hitting 500 HRs doesn’t impress you? Having the 54th most total bases ever doesn’t impress you especially when all 53 ahead of him are in the HOF or will be? 70+ players with fewer total bases than him are in the Hall.
Fred McGriff had 14 seasons of 120+ OPS (many well above 120) along with 3 silver slugger awards. Hit 493 HRs along with 10 more in the postseason where he hit .303/.385/.532 in 218 PAs. It’s embarrassing he’s not in the HOF already.
1974: Cubs/Cardinals brawl…it started because Al Hrabosky was taking a long time getting ready to pitch. Bill Madlock decided he’d go back to the on deck circle for more pine tar. Umpire didn’t like that…no one was ejected.
I think it’s unfair that Omar Vizquel is denigrated because he wasn’t Ozzie Smith who by the way played on Astroturf. Omar’s got 11 Gold Gloves, 2,877 hits & for many years was looked at as one of the very best SS in the game. HOFer to me.
Lou Brock hit a HR to the centerfield seats in the Polo Grounds. Only 3 other people can say the same (Luke Easter, Joe Adcock & Hank Aaron).

Johnny Mize is the only player in history to have a 50 HR season & strikeout less than 50 times. He did this in 1947 (51 HRs and 42 Ks). Thanks to
@JPosnanski
for this stat in his great Baseball 100 book.
I’ve received a number of tweets saying Fred McGriff didn’t quite get to 500 HRs so he’s not a HOFer. Those people lack what’s called joy in their lives.
