I know one thing. When I asked
@MartyM_RTE
to help
@DouglasGAAClub
celebrate a
@OfficialCorkGAA
minor championship double, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation even though he was coming straight from a medical issue. And his fee was a chicken curry…
Tough, disappointing Saturday for
@Kerry_Official
’s finest David Clifford, but within 36 hours, his world, along with that of partner Shauna, turned upside down in a good way with the birth of a baby boy.
#lifechanger
It’s been, by a distance, the worst, saddest year of my life. And there’s been 55 of them. People say 2021 will be better, like pain vanishes on January 2. I’d joyfully take a healthy family year ahead. And wish you the same. It’s ok to say 2020 can f*ck off. Cancer can fuck off.
Setting aside a deep-seated reluctance to post personal stuff on social media to express unending love and admiration for the most serene, stabilising influence in my life. She hasn’t a clue how many times I just stand and watch her in awe. We are married 30 years today.
Don't predict things well generally (nor speak of my family on here), but sat on the side of the bed at 5.24am this morning last year and recognised my life was about to turn grotesquely, and forever, for the worse. Brutally true. Every day is an anniversary. Miss you so much.
Classic Cork humour. ‘Go on Chilli, keep going Chilli, stick it in the net Chilli’, they roared from the sideline.
Why ye call him ‘Chilli’ asked a neutral?
‘He’s Con Kearney’s son’.
Dougie Howlett leaves our shores tomorrow for good. What a positive force the
@AllBlacks
legend has been for
@Munsterrugby
this past 12 years. Proper gentleman too.
Ellen Clifford, had to struggle for too long, now taken too soon. Dreadful. May she rest easy now, without pain. Both her own O'Shea family and the Cliffords are GAA-obsessed.
@Kerry_Official
will play to honour her on Sunday in Limerick. RIP.
That is absolutely embarrassing refereeing from Fergal Kelly (Longford) to give
@Kerry_Official
's David Clifford a second yellow for having the temerity to allow himself be grabbed in a headlock and thrown to the ground.
Revealed: Liam Miller tribute match at Pairc Ui Chaoimh raises €1.5m. €1m goes to Miller family, €250,000 to Marymount Hospice, eight other charities share the remaining quarter of a million euro - including 100k for
@jack_fund
.
Tragically. Hyundai's official account has confirmed that Irish WRC driver Craig Breen has lost his life in a test accident in Croatia this morning. Dreadful, dreadful stuff.
BREAKING: Can confirm that Mick McCarthy is new Republic of Ireland manager and Stephen Kenny is the new Under 21 manager, but there's an intriguing sting in the tail - my understanding is Kenny takes over as senior manager after 2020 Euros. Will be confirmed Sunday at 3pm.
Exclusive and free to read (though not for long): Another fine Ronan O'Gara body of work for
@ExaminerSport
.
The inside story of an historic week for ROG and Stade Rochelais:
Heartfelt condolences to the family of the delightfully entertaining Weeshie Fogarty, former referee and
@radiokerrysport
GAA analyst and
@terracetalkrk
host, who passed away early today. He was 77. A very kind, knowledgeable man who became a radio natural. RIP.
Today is the worst day, they say? Any day, every day is the worst day. Miss the golf, the Arsenal chats and rows, best friendship. Sorely missed, love forever xx
Over weekend,
@ExaminerSport
had writers in Dublin, Cork, Rome, Tralee, Wexford, Galway, Portlaoise, London, Leicester and Navan. Additional quality and insight from Dalo, James Horan, Colin Sheridan et al. None of that comes cheap. 32 pages for €2.40. Please support journalism.
At 9pm tonight, we didn't think
@ExaminerSport
desk would be prepping this cover for Wednesday. Our deepest sympathies to Teddy's family, club, friends, and county.
Cork’s Colm O’Neill (
@crossbar13
) is facing weeks, not months, on the sideline after scans indicated Monday that he has NOT suffered a fourth cruciate ligament injury.
This evening
@OfficialCorkGAA
debated the need for an U18 grade next year to ensure this year’s minor players are not at risk of drifting away from the games. It’s a really important issue.
Exciting times:
@ExaminerSport
delighted to confirm a three-year partnership with
@OfficialCorkGAA
to provide exclusive live streaming of football and hurling club championship games across all grades up to 2022.
Three men who’ve given their last drop for the
@irishexaminer
and who left it all behind them today. CEO Tom Murphy and ex owners Ted and Tom Crosbie. Thank ye for everything and then some.
Before things move on, worth mentioning what upstanding and classy All Ireland champions
@LimerickCLG
hurlers have been. John Kiely has distinguished himself in all aspects of role as manager too. They’ll hardly be down long. Very likeable winners.
Grief upon grief.
@drcrokesgaa
confirm message from family of brave young member Amy O'Connor.
'Our beautiful daughter Amy passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning. We are truly devastated. May Lord have mercy on her young soul.'
This is neither deep or meaningful on John Hume but it highlights how witty, warm he was. We used to share flights to Euro Parliament in Strasbourg. I was a nervous flyer. ‘Kerryman, come sit at the back of the plane’ he said. Why? ‘You ever see a plane reverse into a mountain?’
Got to know
@AghadaGAA
’s finest, Kieran O’Connor in recent years. We had shared fears and anxieties and every time I checked in with him he was more concerned about my brother. Proper man. We sat down for an interview he wanted to do some time back. RIP.
Celtic fan rings
@ExaminerSport
desk, lost his own father when he was young. Ventured idea of a Celtic-Man Utd friendly at the Aviva in honour of Liam Miller. Proceeds to the family, future education of the three kids etc. Thoughts?
My youngest lady returns to school tomorrow, in a room with 30 teenagers. And yet, outdoor under age sports training for half that number is not ok for another fortnight. I dunno....
Always conflicted over personal stuff on social media, something awkward and discomfiting about it. But if I didn’t mention him every April 15, it’s like we’re getting over losing our David. And we never will. xx
Dramatic weekend of sport and, with good reason, I am left thinking of one mother and her son: Ann Kerins and her son John, who lost his dad when he had all his growing up to do. No young lad should have to deal with that. So a gr8
@the_Barrs
day for a Mum and her boy. Brilliant.
Very, very sad news today with the loss of a marvellous
@CorkConRugby
,
@Munsterrugby
and
@IrishRugby
driving force in Jerry Holland. Sincerest condolences to his family. RIP: .
By my estimate,
@ExaminerSport
had writers and correspondents at 32 different venues over the weekend, from Mourneabbey to Marseille, from Straffan to Drimoleague. We believe in being there, but sports journalism doesn't come cheap. Support our work in store or via subscription.
A madcap night with a major system malfunction left
@irishexaminer
crew working til the wee hours to get the paper out. Hopefully it’s in the shops by the time you see this. Thanks to the overnighters...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Still making the news. An extraordinary picture of the crowds outside the
@irishexaminer
office in 1932 awaiting news of the Jack Doyle-Jack Peterson world heavyweight title fight at White City in London.
Clifford was smoked against Dublin and poor against Tyrone yet still ppl think he is footballer of the year. Not for me - James Mc led Dublin to glory without having his best day yest! He’s a born winner and leader.
You don't have to pretend you are infallible or know it all - as a coach or a person. We all f*uck up.
Éamonn Ryan taught me that. Loved this interview with him for that and so many other things. What a gentle man:
@OfficialCorkGAA
@CorkLGFA
The organisers of the Liam Miller Tribute Match confirm the event is now completely sold out and there will be a full house of 45,000 in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on 25 September.
Confirmed:
@CorkLGFA
legend Brid Stack (
@BridStackie
) announces retirement from inter-county football. She is one of a elite quartet with 11 All-Ireland senior football medals.
We do our utmost at
@ExaminerSport
, we really do. And the most read story on our websites Monday (with more than double the next best-read) is some French Ice dancer’s wardrobe malfunction. I’m off back to bed.
Proposal: Would
@officialgaa
counties just stop naming ‘teams’? An exercise in deception but also utter futility. Holding Cship up to ridicule and insulting intelligence of fans. Disrespectful. Submit 26-person squad to Croke Park and confirm starting 15 one hour before throw-in.
Garrett Fitzgerald, the straight-talking Munster-to-the-core rugby man, who oversaw the province’s greatest days at coach and CEO, has passed away. He was 65. A good man. RIP.
@Munsterrugby
Outrageous that justice has never been served in this murderous Mauritius episode. I wince a bit when I hear of
@officialgaa
teams going there on holiday. But perhaps that’s just me…
Shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing overnight in Cork of
@RTEsport
reporter Pat McAuliffe. A veritable bundle of energy around Pairc Ui Rinn, Turner's Cross and Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Heartfelt condolences to his family from all his colleagues at
@ExaminerSport
.
The
@Munsterrugby
winger Darren Sweetnam is heading to Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle until end of the season. Brought in as medical joker after cruciate injury to Jeremy Sinzelle. Sweetnam out of contract at end of season.
Not sure what this says about me (or me anorak) but kudos to
@TippfootballGAA
for producing this map of GAA clubs in the county. How many others have done similar?
29 years ago today (it was a Sunday too), I began my first shift as an
@irishexaminer
staff reporter with instructions from the news desk to chase Irish reax to Hillsborough disaster. To their eternal credit, Ronnie Whelan and John Aldridge spoke to me by phone. Long time ago.
Went to under age football game this week. Watched as a talented full forward was abused wholesale by a full back off the ball. Embarrassing rolling around on ground stuff. Then small quiet midfielder went into FF for a few minutes and sorted the problem. Old school. Love it.
Don’t normally tweet about family stuff but this is a wider concern. My 14 year old daughter is lugging this two stone-plus bag in/out of school. Ridiculous. Will spend more time in physio than classroom. And that’s just short term worry. When will wheelie bags be norm? Sort it.
All eyes turning now towards GAA in Croke Park as political agitation and sporting support cranks up a notch or three behind suggestion that the Liam Miller match on Sept 25 moves from Turners Cross to
@PaircUiCha0imh
. Folk now perusing terms of State’s €30m in grant aid to dev.
A man I was very fond of and wish I knew a lot better than I did.
RIP Tom Ó Sé of Ard a Bhothair, near Ventry in west Kerry. He is picured here (right) with his brothers Michael and Paidi:
He may actually end me for this, but wishing a very happy 60th birthday to
@LenihanDonal
- and continued health and hard work into the future. One of
@ExaminerSport
's best ever signings...
I'm sure there's science (?) behind delaying the return of individual sports and under age training to April 26th, and I'd love to read it. As
@tomas5ky
said earlier, it's ok to have 30 kids in a classroom now, but not 15 outdoors for another month?
On a hectic day of sport you will do well to see a better pic than this reaction to
@Carlow_GAA
's victory over Offaly from
@Inphosports
' Tom O'Hanlon
Roy Keane didn't pick his droll sense of humour off the stones. Every convo I ever had with Mossie ended with me smiling or laughing. A decent, self-effacing man. RIP.
HEADS UP: On Saturday,
@ExaminerSport
will publish a special 32-page preview to the
@officialgaa
Championships. Sparkling writing therein from the best in the business. Worth the equivalent of a takeaway coffee..?
