Imagine that you could see the downward slide of American democracy, long before it happens. Imagine the past seven years of Trumpism crossed with The Devil Wears Prada. And make it a *completely true story*.
That's THE MAGA DIARIES. Preorder today.
As someone who had been at the Capitol from 9 AM until just now, I'd have to push back against the claims that the Capitol Police are being permissive with this crowd. From what I witnessed, they were vastly undermanned today. (1/x)
Another bellweather for minorities going pro-Trump: the Vietnamese-American community, which had always been more Republican, went HAM for Trump this time.
The real lesson: don't ever tell Communist refugees that socialism is the future of America.
NEW from me: The controversial 1776 Report contains at least three instances of recycled and copied work.
An entire page of the report was lifted, near-verbatim and unattributed, from a 2008 article by one of the Commission's members.
NEW from me:
My assignment was to watch One America News (OAN) for a full day: 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., no turning the television off, no leaving my apartment and no channel-switching whatsoever.
Here is what I learned.
Interesting fact about Bruce Castor: as a Philly DA in 2005, he declined to prosecute Bill Cosby over a sexual assault allegation, lost his 2015 race for AG because of that, and then in 2017, *tried to sue the Cosby victim* (and lost)
New from me: In the rise of anti-Asian violence nationwide,
@AndrewYang
and I split a Peking duck and discussed the weirdness of being 2nd-gen immigrant kids (and Cowboy Bebop)
When I joined Politico in 2019, Blake Hounshell, my editor, published an op-ed with the immortal hed: "Just Another Day in Fucknutsville".
When DC Twitter freaked out, Blake didn't back down: he declared himself the "mayor of Fucknutsville" on Twitter.
God, I loved that man.
NEW from me and
@markscott82
: Data from misinformation researchers indicate that the StopTheSteal Facebook page, which had 330K users before it was banned for promoting violence, was run by two operatives linked to Steve Bannon.
Also this, which illustrates how social distancing versus insane forced Hubei Province-style quarantines work. TLDR, it's easier to fight the spread of coronavirus by NOT PARTYING AND STAYING HOME than it is for a government to shut down your borders.
I cannot believe there is a universe where I, as a White House reporter for the wonkiest outlet in existence, am writing about the ancient god Moloch and inter-dimensional spiritual warfare, but
There was a strong police presence this morning, for sure but not as many barricades or officers as one would see during, say, Inauguration. Mostly metal fencing -- the kind you see at concerts -- barred people from getting onto the lawn. (2/x)
Hello hi everybody! This is a personal announcement that's not so much "announcement", but more "confirmation of the inevitable": I'm now POLITICO's national reporter on domestic extremism, QAnon, MAGAnomics, militias, Trump shenanigans, and other pleasant topics!

Ex-VF here. These clothes are loaned by designers to the mag for the shoots (and several other events, such as fashion-oriented parties) and then returned afterwards.
I would add that while the MAGA crowd talks a big game about being pro-LEO, they immediately stopped once Cap Police asked them to do things as simple as orderly using a crosswalk. Overheard: "What if we just don't listen to them?" (5/x)
My chief observation about Trump's recent statements , and the response inside MAGA extremist internet, is that there is one crucial thing he hasn't done that's guaranteed to blunt their energy:
He has not said that he lost the election and concedes to Biden. (1/3)

: Statement of Andriy Yermak, Chairman of the Presidential Office:
"Russia has launched a missile attack on the territory where the Babyn Yar memorial complex is located. These villains are killing Holocaust victims for the second time."
It's the sort of fencing that a hundred people or so could easily tear down if they bum-rushed the building, as they did the moment it was breached (shortly after Trump's speech). (3/x)
Special Master to Trump lawyers: “If the government gives me prima facia evidence that they are classified documents, and you don’t advance any claim of declassification, I’m left with a prima facia case of classified documents, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s the end of it,”
Uh, good morning, all you new people who picked up this thread! In addition to Dr. Bitton's article above, this collection of articles is great for further reading and understanding of what the heck is going on and what to do in the upcoming few weeks:
"Transparency. I approved transparency. That's bigger than health care. The people I had working on it, one of them is like the all-time expert on transparency, highly respected man, doctor. He said, 'sir, if you get this approved, this is bigger than health care'" -- Trump
Breaking: NYS Judge James Burke rules NYPD can now keep anyone (peaceful protestors arrested for curfew and criminal looters) detained for over 24 hours given these are extraordinary times. “It’s a crisis within a crisis", he said. "All writs are denied, BK, BX and manhattan"
According to a staffer, 40,000 of these leaflets are being distributed to Yang and Garcia’s respective strongholds in Flushing, Queens, and the East Village. Pretty straightforward messaging.
Hours before, I spoke to a man who fantasized about occupying the Capitol. "We patriots ought to be in that building. That building belongs to We The People. They work for us. And here we are barred, to the point that we can’t even get on the property within 120 yards.” (4/x)

: How Trump's top allies seized on a meme in Arizona and turned it into the crux of their recount efforts.
That meme? SHARPIES ARE A LIB PLOT TO STEAL THE ELECTION
In my conversations with extremism researchers, they've noted that militias and militia-like movements tend to be reflexively anti-government. That seemed to bear out today. (7/x)
I spent the past week watching the RNC livestreamed on the Trump campaign's official Twitch channel, which has become a platform for MAGA fans to post racist and sexist memes depicting, for instance, Black men being whipped, shot, and hung on trees.
The unfortunate thing is that GOP leadership, even Trump, can denounce QAnon all they want -- a QAnon follower won't listen. Either they'll believe it's part of The Plan and the GOP is helping Trump hide his tracks, or they'll think that they're elites hiding their own guilt.
Yesterday I visited the demonstration outside of Walter Reed, where MAGA Country had gathered to celebrate and pray for their leader — an impromptu festival-meets-vigil for its venerated, living saint.
The entire premise of forming a militia, after all, is that they think normal law enforcement has failed them - and subsequently, they must take matters into their own hands. (8/x)
As
@dlippman
pointed out later, it is not a good sign when Homeland Security vehicles start rushing towards the capitol. Apparently, that never happens. But today was sort of a "this never happens " kind of day. (10/x)
A number of DHS Federal Protective Service cars are rushing towards the Capitol on Pennsylvania Ave. right now minutes after it was breached by protestors.
To recap: Sidney Powell wants to institute MARTIAL LAW TO REDO THE ELECTION, which is IMPOSSIBLE and also ever so slightly illegal and unconstitutional

Someone more familiar with police de-escalation tactics can weigh in here, but I kind of think that if they tried anything -- and my own interactions with LEO seemed ti indicate that they were trying to keep the mood low-key -- it clearly didn't work. (9/x)
My colleague
@tina_nguyen
and I drove around Capitol Hill last night as we prepared to cover the protests and we thought to ourselves “wow, there’s very little extra security” except metal barricades that are easy to hop over. Today we saw the results of the inadequate security.
I've been self-isolated in my apartment since CPAC, and socially distanced for nearly two weeks. This thread from a submariner who does 6-month stints away from society has given me a LOT of good advice on how not to climb up the walls.
Having covered the Women's March in 2017 and getting stuck in one place for hours because we could barely move, I'd say this is about .75% of a Women's March
1:10PM: MAGA March continues to leave Freedom Plaza. Demonstrators walking towards Supreme Court and US Capitol.
Authorities are *not* providing a crowd estimate. But it’s several thousand.

NEW: On Tuesday, Bannon-linked Chinese billionaire Miles Guo told his followers on GETTR to back up their social media accounts, saying the site would be wiped and relaunched.
Today, the site was rebranded as a "brand new" pro-MAGA social network.
At 9 AM,

groups in contested states, I've been watching it develop. Once again, disinformation spread on that platform is being used to disrupt the democratic process, right this second.
The number of professional MAGA activists I talk to who are still in denial about Wednesday — talking about disavowing the rioters, promoting debates and principle, etc — is leading me to an ironic conclusion:
THEY have turned into the out of touch elites
