I've been tracking accounts that 'liked' tweets from Russian government and embassy accounts. Sprayed a bit of sparkling water on the screen when I looked at the account creation dates
Sorry to interrupt your Covid scrolling, but Arctic Siberia is recording 48 degree Celsius ground surface temperatures and if you hate pandemics youβre gonna really hate climate apocalypse
Here's a wild idea - hear me out. What if instead of asking people for flood donations, the government just collected a huge chunk of everyone's money each payday and used it strategically
Allegations that
@elonmusk
is forcing his engineers to boost his tweets are fully supported by the data. I did some analysis and here's the total tweet impressions per hour over the past week... Timelines match up perfectly with the reports
Just finished watching the series finale of
@ExpanseOnPrime
. Absolute masterpiece. How this was not the biggest show on TV boggles my mindβmy life is forever better for having watched it
Tim Smith has been spending the last hour trying to figure out how to politicize the earthquake, and this, gentle Twitter folk, is what he came up with
Folks messaged me about a new hashtag anti-Andrews campaign trending, so I collected over 67,000 tweets (past 7 days) containing the relevant hashtags and ran the data through a coordinated behaviour detection system
A few insights, starting with a network map π§΅
Honest question, why isn't NSW doing a state-wide lockdown? Yes I know there are complexities around it, but I can't make sense of what's going on anymore.
Everything about this suggests it's a stunt to attract attention and drive donations. Because everything Avi Yemini does is to attract attention and drive donations.
OK, so the hashtag "Sack*Dan*Andrews" is trending in Australia right now...
A brief thread:
I collected 2,374 tweets containing this hashtag, sent by 959 accounts.
Nearly a quarter of accounts (24%) were created in 2020
βI apologise to Mr Rudd for any damage caused to him by my false statementβ
Disinformation of this kind doesnβt just harm one individual, it erodes our very sense of shared reality and trust in the institutions of democracy
So I ran
@Botometer
on 16513 pro-Russian accounts born in 2022. There's clearly a HUGE bot π€ network artificially hyping up ('liking') Russian government and embassy tweets
This chart shows the number of accounts with a given bot score, where a higher score means more bot-like:
I've been tracking accounts that 'liked' tweets from Russian government and embassy accounts. Sprayed a bit of sparkling water on the screen when I looked at the account creation dates
Anecdotally, I didn't believe
@elonmusk
's claim about a decline in hate speech on this platform, so I ran a large-scale data analysis.
As this graph shows, there is no evidence of a decline in tweets containing hate speech terms* over the past fortnight.
π§΅[trigger warning]
Again, to be crystal clear, Twitterβs strong commitment to content moderation remains absolutely unchanged.
In fact, we have actually seen hateful speech at times this week decline *below* our prior norms, contrary to what you may read in the press.
What weβve got here is a classic case of malinformation. One of the most dangerous and sinister modalities of propagandaβitβs fact based information that is weaponised and deployed to cause harm. In this case the biggest harm is to Australian democracy
Vectors of political Covid spin:
1. βunderlying health conditionsβ = rationalise death
2. blame the citizens = defer government accountability
3. report vaccination stats first = government is doing well
4. stop reporting detailed infection stats = makes (1) and (3) easier
Imagine for a moment the pain and anger it would cause if a loved one passed away and then someone says to you, βoh but they had an underlying condition right?β. Now scale that up to the size of a state and broadcast it daily on national TV. No, thatβs not OK and it needs to stop
The police at the
#Brisbaneprotest
were the kindest and most helpful Iβve ever seen. Offering face masks and hand sanitizer, and helping people and especially families find their way
It was truly a privilege to contribute to this story on
#mediawatch
tonight. Australia has a growing problem with information disorder and it affects everyone, regardless of creed or political stripe
Fascinating
#MediaWatch
tonight about the bots and trolls artificially driving up anti-Andrews sentiment (
#DictatorDan
) on social media. If you missed it, please watch it. Gives a great understanding of why there are a lot less critics of Andrews than it seems.
Let's debunk this right here: the headline of this article is disinformation.
There is no evidence in this article to attribute the fake signatories to
@MrKRudd
. It is false information spread with the intent to mislead readers.
Here's why (thread):
The headline is calculated to suggest the bots were inspired by Rudd - for those who go on to read the story that is clearly not so. Will the Oz assist the AFP with their inquiries into whether this conduct - designed to mislead Parliament - involved any offences?
Three key takeaways:
1. Fringe activists are driving the anti-Andrews trending campaign, but it's a politician (
@CraigKellyMP
) and citizen journalist (
@OzraeliAvi
) who, with only a few tweets, turn the sparks into a roaring blaze that sustains itself thereafter
So I ran
@Botometer
on 16513 pro-Russian accounts born in 2022. There's clearly a HUGE bot π€ network artificially hyping up ('liking') Russian government and embassy tweets
This chart shows the number of accounts with a given bot score, where a higher score means more bot-like:
Murdoch is quietly scrubbing incriminating Covid-19 misinformation videos from websites ahead of a grilling by the Senate on Friday. Dozens of videos have vanished with no correction or apology for spreading dangerous lies. But donβt worry; we have copies.
#MurdochRoyalCommission
Ah yes, the mobilisation stage of participatory disinformation, where the crowd flirt with violence as a political strategy. This is the last stop before the extremism point of no return, and sadly a logical consequence of endless βdictatorβ and βoppressionβ framing by elites
Iβll go one further, on reflection; this is one of the most dangerous false narratives in the election so far. It goes beyond party politics and into the very DNA of liberal democracyβthis is a narrative that, if accepted, would eat democracy from the inside out
Iβm not going to win any popularity awards here but please reconsider sharing Pauline Hansonβs new video series. Itβs designed to exploit your brain and get you to amplify it
At this point I'm scratching my head why
@TwitterSafety
isn't all over this. I've banging on for weeks how these Russian govt accounts are spreading disinformation on the hourly - and coordinating together, no less. Now we learn they're boosted by bots!
I've been coding up a new workflow for analysis of Twitter profiles. Thought I'd kick off Monday by showcasing some insights about
@PRGuy17
, who everyone is talking about.
I collected the entire timeline of 45k tweets. First off, we learn they're active about 14 hours a day:
To clarify: the issue here isn't about politics, and it's not about bots or trolls.
What's most interesting is that a small group of actors, many of them recently created and anonymous, can get a hashtag to trend nationally.
This is a double edged sword for democracy.
The defamation case is deeply consequential for political discourse in Australia - I am troubled by it for various reasons, but let's see how it plays out over the coming weeks and months. Thanks for your time as always
The network shows large-scale, loosely coordinated behaviour by a hard core of campaigners who spam the hashtags repeatedly together, all day long.
BUT it's
@CraigKellyMP
and
@OzraeliAvi
who jump onto the fringe activity and turn it into a roaring blaze with two viral tweets
For anyone interested in studying YouTube, the ever amazing
@ObservatoryTeam
have released a new toolkit to collect YouTube video metadata and comments
The most active anti-Andrews hashtag campaigner is a newborn anonymous account, created just over 2 weeks ago. They've tweeted 311 times per day or 12 times per hour, and only tweet about Andrews and the Vic lockdown
Hey
@AusElectoralCom
, love your work on the whole elections thing. Question! Will voting for a "teal" independent, or even The Greens, undermine democracy? I've seen that claimed a bunch and would hate to be responsible for the end of free elections in Australia. Cheers.
Sorry to be that person but this image isnβt doctored. In some ways itβs even more insidious and much more common... an out-of-context photo from half a decade ago, deployed with the intent to deceive
100% fake news. Doctored photographs. No credit. Rubbish reporting. Once I was so proud to work for the SMH. Today Iβd rather go to a food bank than sell my soul.
In all my years Iβve never seen a political scare campaign cut through the truth like itβs cut through these four basic facts about the
#VoiceToParliament
referendum. It doesnβt even just undermine liberal democracyβit undermines our shared sense of reality
@Twitter
clearly has a Herculean problem on its hands to moderate Russian disinformation at scale. But honestly - these bot networks are hiding in plain sight. They're artificially boosting false information straight from the horse's mouth. Well, here we are I guess.
Goes without saying: if anyone would like tweet and/or account IDs, please DM me. I can also share code (Python) and describe workflow so the findings can be reproduced. thanks for your time - let's fight Putin in the information space.
NEWS YOU CAN'T TRUST: Twitter has stripped News Corp's The Australian of its verified 'blue tick' status. The move follows the masthead's fervent efforts to support Scott Morrison's re-election bid with a barrage of false and misleading content.
#auspol
Finally, data was collected using the 'twarc2' toolkit and the coordination networks constructed using a custom-built software that we've made freely available!
If anyone wants to reproduce this and needs tweet IDs, please DM me.
I am completely humbled and really cannot find the words to express my gratitude for being awarded a DECRA grant. None of this is possible without all the support, mentoring and encouragement Iβve received, during what has and continues to be a difficult personal time (cont.).
OK, I want to run an experiment. If youβve been blocked by a politician, please reply with their username below. Iβll construct a network tomorrow to gain some insights into what is otherwise a black box in terms of what I can get from the Twitter API. Iβll start:
ICYMI - brilliant piece by
@JennaPrice
about the problems with politicians who mass block citizens. Glad to contribute my own thoughts to this growing issue
It takes a while to run
@Botometer
on over 10,000 Twitter accounts, but the results are in...
This network shows strong evidence that coordinated armies of bot-like accounts are responsible for getting the "IStandWithP*tin" hashtag trending.
Research is spending two days reading eight journal articles and a quarter of a book to get a paragraph correct, only to find out you need to delete it
3. This little case study has many parallels with previous partisan hashtag campaigns, echoing research I've previously conducted with colleagues at
@qutdmrc
For the record itβs undermining propaganda - classic stuff. It appeals to normative democratic ideals but in doing so actually erodes them β of course voting for a legitimate candidate isnβt anti-democratic and/or nihilistic
A pro-Andrews counter-attack started almost immediately, orchestrated by
@PRGuy17
, in an effort to hijack the hashtags and drown out the anti-Andrews discourse
Protesters break through the police line, an officer gets assaulted and trampled by demonstrators, people are screaming and covered in capsicum spray
@theage
This is a technique of disinformation. Whether the questions are answered or not, partially or completely, the damage is done and the wedge driven deeper. Nobody benefits from this.
βI asked 12 simple questions, the government has selectively chosen to answer five of them. My view is they should get on and answer the other seven,β Shadow Treasurer Louise Staley says of her media release regarding Premier Daniel Andrewsβ fall.
2. There's an information war happening and a battle ensued between pro-Andrews campaigners (led by
@PRGuy17
) who routinely hijack such hashtags, however here they appear to be drowned out by the coordinated behaviour of the anti-Andrews campaigners
The top 20 accounts posted 25% (n=593) of tweets.
Yes that's right, just 20 Twitter accounts make up *one quarter* of the volume of this hashtag, which is now appearing on everyone's screens via the trending list.
Quick clarification - it appears that
@CraigKellyMP
was more active than I noted in this dataset, as
@PRGuy17
has documented here. However, his activity volume pales in comparison to the fringe accounts, although gets far far more engagement
TWITTER TANTRUM: Fringe far right MP Craig Kelly has been mocked for posting a barrage of increasingly hysterical tweets about Dan Andrews in the aftermath of Gladys Berejiklian's resignation. One commentator has quipped "it's old man yells at Dan"
#auspol
In the interest of scientific rigour and transparency, I provide the code for data collection, along with a CSV file containing the tweet IDs of the dataset I initially collected for this analysis.
Off the back of this tweet, I would like to raise awareness about the
#UnderlyingDoesntJustifyDying
campaign. Thank you to
@jennibeattie
for sharing this with me and please consider amplifying that hashtag because βunderlying health conditionsβ never justifies dying from COVID-19
Vectors of political Covid spin:
1. βunderlying health conditionsβ = rationalise death
2. blame the citizens = defer government accountability
3. report vaccination stats first = government is doing well
4. stop reporting detailed infection stats = makes (1) and (3) easier
@PRGuy17
that must be a record π
Folks, a master class in hashtag activism.
By my count, this hashtag went from newborn to
#1
on the Australian trending list in a bit over 30 minutes
ICYMI - brilliant piece by

But the sustained anti-Andrews hashtag activism (see network above), super-fuelled by a handful of viral tweets by
@OzraeliAvi
and
@CraigKellyMP
, ultimately overpowers the pro-Andrews activists
The top 20 accounts sent 8% of all tweets:
Thank you to everyone for sharing their experiences of being blocked by Australian politicians on Twitter... the results are in!
Here's a network map showing which Australian politicians are the biggest blockers. The nodes are users and a link means user A blocks user B π§΅

... it has become such a divisive figure in

and increasingly gained attention outside of the platform, too. Its success and impact undercuts the business model of people like Avi Yemini who weaponise outrage and convert fear and doubt into clout and donations.
The campaign slogan βKeep Joshβ just keeps reminding me of how in political theory the plutocrat just wants power for its own sakeβnot policy, not public interest, just keep me in power because Iβm powerful and rich
Notice the big spike at 1.0?
That's 714 accounts that have a perfect bot score, so they are almost certainly automated.
The above chart uses the 'universal' Completely Automated Probability (CAP) score. So basically a CAP score of 1 means the
@Botometer
model is certain
... social justice issues and supporting Victorians on Twitter through unbearably difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clearly the account is partisan in its support for Labor and has a knack for harnessing and amplifying outrage culture. I suspect perhaps this is why...
Sorry, but I feel like I have a duty to point out that discussions around Morrison and QAnon are at risk of starting to look like conspiracy theorising
Letβs see what
@4corners
reveals, but always check sources and stay mindful of your biases when consuming and sharing content
Every few weeks Iβll be scoping out spikes in keywords on Australian Twitter to discover that, yes,
@ScottMorrisonMP
βs cooking has been politicised again
A lot of rhetoric about the mixed bag of people in these protests. That may be true, but βthe standard you walk past is the standard you setβ. There are neo-nazis and far right extremists leading and involved in these crowdsβsome have been charged by counter-terrorism officials
Let's talk about the protesters and "reasonable concerns".
Where do you draw the line between a few nutcases in a crowd, and being part of the crowd itself?
Where do you separate the people with reasonable concerns from the extremists?
