Ten Coaching Hacks for 2024
Some ideas to get the best out of your time coaching in the year ahead...
1⃣Focus on you - you are the primary ingredient in any relationship you have. So before you start thinking about anyone else, think about you! If you aren't looking after
@Official_STFC
I can see there are lots of offers here for Joe and his mum to come to a game. So, If you manage to find Joe id like to pay for a weeks worth of food shopping for them. Please keep us informed 👍
Great video, protecting the penalty taker, taking on the mind game tactics from the opposition
✅Huge amount of foresight to plan this
✅Players taking on different ‘roles’ to support team
✅Deception and disguise
99% of people don’t get in to coaching for £££
They get in to it for the joy of supporting others, giving back & more
They juggle a lot outside of coaching. Time, family, energy, work
Coaches work incredibly hard & in many cases with little limited support
Huge respect ✊
✅Clarity
✅Guiding principles, not micro coaching
✅Positive message
✅Setting a forward direction
✅Energy
So much to consider from how this team talk was delivered 👏
When joining Arsenal Women 3 years ago I had zero applications from female coaches when advertising coaching roles. Today female candidates represented 40% of the coaches who came to interview for one of our coaching positions⚽️Huge growth & potential for aspiring female coaches
There is a misconception that the higher up the pathway you coach, the more complex and complicated your practices need to be. In contrast, it’s about simplicity. Keeping things straight forward and making them memorable have a greater impact over a longer period.
Love the tight spaces, angles and representative information in this practice
4️⃣v4️⃣ + 1️⃣ with 🧤
So many variations on this practice, and if you were to just let the players play without any intervention, there would be lots of positive outcomes
Frustrating when you see U9 & U10 groups labelled as 'Elite'
The language builds pressure and is unhelpful as a narrative for young people. If you are elite when you are 9, where do you go with that?
Maybe people using this language need to be more imaginative with their words
When I started coaching I thought I knew everything
A few years & coaching jobs later I realised that I actually knew little but was open to learning
After working in a few places I realised I do know stuff, but the more I discover the more there is to find
Coaching is endless
No one under the age of 15 years old is elite
To be elite you have to be head and shoulders above the rest of the world
Elite doesn't exist in youth sport
Coaching a pre-academy session tonight and a little one runs over & asks to go to his mum 👩👦I reply by saying “we have only got a few minutes left, can you hold on?” ✋ Best reply ever: “no Tom, I’ve just tied my first shoe lace & I have to tell her” 👟 Kids 1st, football 2nd ⚽️
This is a fantastic video, some takeaways:
⚽️Coaches are human
🪞Potter is incredibly aware of his own emotions & skilful at managing them
🎙️We need to challenge the narrative of what effective coaching looks like, especially in grassroots football
I always scratch my head when I hear coaches saying they’ll “do a fun session” as it’s the last week of term. What have all the other sessions been like? Surely fun needs to be a pre-requisite for any practice?
So many coaches who work in part time roles only get paid for delivery time
We need more organisations to recognise the time coaches need to spend in planning & reflection
If more coaches were paid for the plan & review more coaches & athletes would have the chance to thrive
If you’re coaching an Under 14, 12, 10 football team, remember, your mission objective isn’t to win! It should be to give the young people playing the best possible development experience. If winning happens as a consequence, then fantastic. Player centred = Human centred
During my time at Arsenal Women we tried to find different ways of co-creating with the players, as well as frequently stretching and challenging ourselves as coaches
A small thread... 🧵
Delighted to confirm that I have accepted the coaching position of Oxford United Women Assistant Manager⚽️
Really looking forward to working with a team of excellent coaches and a great group of players in the season ahead 🏟️
I would love it if research papers were written in plain English, rather than using complex words to make things sound more complex than what they are.
Maybe more coaches would engage with research led insight if it was more straightforward to digest.
Some of the stuff they don’t teach you on qualifications that you need when your coaching…
😖Dealing with pressure
↔️Coaching in small spaces
🕵️♀️Part time coaching along side full time job
2️⃣Working with low numbers
🦸♂️Leadership skills
🤝Building relationships
✅ Delighted to have completed the UEFA A License
After 2 years, 6 blocks online & face to face, thousands of minutes coaching and plenty of memorable learning experiences, it’s done ⚽️
Thank you to everyone who has supported me on the journey, it means the world 🌎
Absolutely delighted that I‘ve secured a place on the UEFA A License ⚽️ It’s been an aspiration for the last decade & I couldn’t be more humbled & excited to be accepted 🤘 Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my coaching journey 🙌 I can not wait for the next chapter 📚
What if we changed the football academy system
Rather than scrambling to select children at young ages, why don’t academies leave players to play in their home clubs
And then support local coaches, create strong links, delay selection and make better talent prediction decisions
Delighted to continue coaching at the Arsenal Women Academy for the 2020/21 season 🚀
When the time comes it’ll be an awesome opportunity to support, stretch & develop the future potential of the women’s game ⚽️
97% of players in elite academy environments do not play a single minute in the Premier League
Only 1 in 70,000 youth basketball players in the USA go on to play in the NBA
Fascinating insight in
@bakerjyorku
book, posing some very important questions for coaches
Absolutely delighted that I’ll be starting a new and exciting role with UK Coaching as a Senior Coach Developer 🎉 Awesome opportunity to support and work with an amazing group of coaches and developers 📈🚀🤘🌟
On Boxing Day, Lucy and I recover the best Christmas present ever 🎄
Making his world debut, Charlie William Hartley was born at 11:16am weighing 8lbs 1oz ❤️
The adventure begins 🍼
Playing football can develop rugby
Playing rugby can develop athletics
Playing athletics can develop cricket
Playing cricket can develop tennis
Playing tennis can develop squash
Sport is a wonderful! Give it a go! 🙂
For part time coaches, coaching is never the 4 hours of training a week & game at weekend
The unseen planning, review, conversations with athletes, managing and leading in the club can be endless
We need to value the time off the pitch in equal measure to the time on the pitch
Co-Coaching; if you can spend time developing how good your coaching team is at working together, then you could increase the efficiency of your coaching practice
Here are a few ideas of optimising your co-coaching 🧵
The most important thing we can do as coaches is create an environment & experience where the people we coach want to come back next week, and the week after and the week after that. If we’re not doing that then you’re knowledge of the sport is redundant.
So many clubs who pay their coaches just for the "delivery" of their coaching practice
We know that practice design / planning & reflection is so important but value isn't associated with it
Would love to see more clubs paying coaches for the time to plan & review not just "do"
One of my favourite moments coaching at the pre-academy at Arsenal was when a young boy ran to me in delight, wanting to go & see his mum on the side. Of course I replied, but why so urgent, “I’ve just tied my first shoelace!” Shows what is really important to little people 😁
Youth success is not a pre-cursor for senior achievement
The people who win at youth age groups is almost a totally different population to those who win at senior level. Only about a 10% cross over
This has huge implications for coach priorities when working with children
Today a parent reached out to see if we could help. Her daughter recently joined our Dev Programme but boys at her school didn’t believe that she played at Arsenal 🔴
@bmeado9
our Winger recorded a video telling this young lady how awesome she is & how proud she should feel ⚽️
If you work in a role where you support coaches, eg: head of performance, pathway manager, head of coaching, coach developer, we have some interesting workshops coming up

Coaches need to look after themselves
With long (unsociable) hours, travel, complex problems to solve, sometimes a lack of sleep & good food - life for a coach can be tough
If you want to be at their best for the athletes you coach, treat yourself like a performer too 🧵
I remember that it was frowned upon to take your session plan on to the pitch with you and check it during the practice.
If a coach wants to take their plan with them in to the coaching session, then go for it! It is not a memory test!
Remember, children don’t play sport for trophies and medals. That’s adults layering their motivations on to youth sport. Children take part for the excitement, connection, play and experience. Try not to get in the way of that.
As a young coach I continuously tried to be like other coaches. I worked hard but always tried to replicate the practices, behaviours of others
As I’ve developed, I’ve realised that learning from others is really important, but it is impossible to be someone else
Be yourself
<1% Chance of a youth football player turning professional as an adult
<1% Chance of being hit by lightening in the UK
<1% Winning the National Lottery
Youth sport needs to be about a lot more than winning
UEFA A License Block 5 complete ⚽️
Still not a ball kicked, but this block has been a great opportunity to apply themes from the course & has been the most 'sticky' learning experience so far
Thanks
@smevsey
and Brian for your ace facilitation 💪

Continuing to learn and develop as a coach is really important. As the All Blacks ask, “Where are you growing?”
Here are some ideas on what coaches can do to support their learning and development, regardless of their sport or level

I’ve always had some challenges with youth coaches calling youth players elite. Surely you’re not elite until you’ve won the World Cup or an Olympic medal. Perhaps we should reserve elite for senior competition winners rather than the U14’s 🤔
Delighted to announce that I will be moving into the role of Coaching Team Lead at
@_UKCoaching
A fantastic opportunity to drive coaching forwards in the UK, supporting coaches working from community to performance, the coach development workforce & wider coaching system
The beauty of the women’s game excelled itself today ❤️ 3 Arsenal players & 1 legend appeared at training to surprise some of our development girls ⚽️ Playing, coaching & laughing with the group 🌟 The intimacy of the female game is what makes it so special & must be preserved🤘
The technical and tactical parts of a sport are the easy bits to coach ⚽️
Identifying a mission, developing a culture and facilitating environment where people can fulfil their human potential is the tricky bit 🚀
Thoughts? 🧐
After completing Block 1 of the UEFA A License (Build the Attack) I have made some notes on the themes and delivery of the course with some reflections and ideas for coaches.
If you are interested you can read my blog here...
Some important principles for youth coaches:
✅Performance over result
✅Intention over outcome
✅Person over practice
💥Performance happens in midst of learning
💥Learning is messy
😀Language precedes culture
😀Play drives practice
3️⃣ years ago today I started at Arsenal as Women’s Development Manager ⚽️ What an amazing journey it has been 🌟 Meeting thousands of players, hundreds of coaches and building a team of awesome people, inspiring every girl to love football ❤️
Lots of coaches sharing sessions. I’m all for sharing & think it’s brilliant that people are open, but context is key. If the session works in one env in won’t always in another. Would it be better to share practice design principles? Then coaches can design & adapt new stuff?
This is brilliant. The courage, self-awareness, adaptability, self-reflection skills are out of this world. What can more “traditional” sports learn from movement solutions like this?
This is coaching.
Relational coaching that focuses on people. Communication is at the heart of it. Talk to people, like adults (in this context), not like you ‘own the team’ or them. It’s about everyone, not the leader. And similar principles for me apply at all levels.
I’ve been coaching for over 20 years. I’ve worked around the world, grassroots, academy & senior football, for NGB’s & Pro Clubs, with male & female players
I still get nervous before every session, & value having a plan. The more experienced I get, the more important it is!
Performing well in sport at youth level is not a predictor of high performance at senior level
Quite the opposite. High performing senior athletes are largely a different group of people who were successful at youth
We need to take care of everyone in our talent pathways
Over the past few weeks, I have been fortunate enough to listen to and engage with some world leading experts around the subject of Talent Identification and Development
Here are some of the key messages that have really stood out to me... 🧵
So called soft-skills need to be reframed. The skills of building rapport, relationships, communicating effectively, have high levels of emotional awareness - they’re not soft, they’re power-skills that underpin great coaching
Tech & Tac standards in L2 have increased hugely in recent years
Enjoyable to watch Swindon 3-5-2 yesterday play will a number of clear strategies to disrupt & penetrate the Colchester Shape 4-2-3-1
💪Aggressive Shape
🪤Setting Traps
🔀Broken Lines
⚖️Shifting balance

As a coach, if you’re always thinking about winning and losing you’re probably missing the magic that is happening in front of you. In my opinion, Coaching isn’t about the destination, it’s about valuing the journey, the people & what you discover together along the way
Coaches saying that they’ve “produced” a player is unhelpful
Coaches can support, guide, direct and inspire
Ultimately, players hold the key to their own development. Coaches play a crucial role in that, but it’s not the only role, and it’s not production
Coach development should not be about treating coaches as empty cups to fill with knowledge
Coach development should be about helping people recognise the problems & opportunities in their own environments
And help them create solutions that help redesign the future
What a year it has been for our girls development programme. We have more than 3️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ girls training every week & have seen over 2️⃣3️⃣ move in to academy football ⚽️ I’m proud that our player centred, games based, positive & consistent approach to coaching is changing the game ❤️
I wasn't brilliant at school. Probably botched my A-Levels. Chose not to go to uni.
Persevered & worked hard to forge a career in a sport.
Came back to formal education later, where it made more sense to me.
Grades are okay - but hard work and never giving up is worth more
This Friday my journey at Arsenal comes to a conclusion ⚽️
What a spectacular 3️⃣ years it has been meeting so many fantastic people at home & around the world 🌎
It’s been a privilege to play a part in inspiring more girls to fall in love with football ❤️
When I started coaching as a coach in an academy, early in my journey, the academy manager shared some insight
“I’ll always ask, how did we play? I’ll never ask, what was the score?”
Simple, but important statement
Youth development should be focused on intent over outcome
I’d encourage any coach, who has only ever worked in “their” sport to make a new connection with someone who coaches in a different environment. You’ll learn lots about them, yourself, and your coaching.
I’ve noticed, the more I learn about coaching, and coaching football, the more uncertain I feel about what is right for the players I’m coaching
In the past I had certainty, but the more I discover, the more challenging it feels to make the right decision
If you want better athletes, you need to start by investing in your coaches. From support, learning & development through to making coaching a sustainable and viable career path. So many fantastic coaches have to balance a duel career.
