On 4 April this "Roman silver amulet of a grotesque face ( 1-2 century A.D.)" is being auctioned, est. £2,000-3,000. It supposedly comes from an "Esteemed European Collection". My God, they didn't even try to hide it. You can even see the kippah.

Yesterday the Church of St Cornelius & St Cyprian in La Baconnière (northwest France) was demolished. It dated back to the 12th century (rebuilt in the 19th), with a bell from 1584 & stained glass windows by Auguste Alleaume. It will be replaced by a "symbolic gathering place".

@ross66643289 I think that is a good attitude. It's worth seeking out a church where there are people your age or with a similar disposition to you. Last winter I attended mass at a local church in Prague and everyone had a great time socialising afterwards. 👍

I’m in Luxor, Upper Egypt. Behind me stand the Colossi of Memnon. In antiquity, Roman tourists would visit the northern statue at sunrise to hear it ‘sing’, which they believed brought good luck. This whistling was due to a crack in the stone, caused by an earthquake in 27 BC.

Today this unidentified portrait was put up for auction for €700. It is in fact a lost portrait of "Lord Strange" (the 5th Earl of Derby), early patron of Marlowe and Shakespeare! The painter is likely Marcus Gheeraerts, see later copy right. This is a significant discovery.

@woetoconquered @gunsnrosesgirl3 This is not the way to remove varnish. Unless you don't care about abrasion to the original paint underneath, and you just want to earn a quick buck. You work in small patches at a time to prevent unnecessary damage. He clearly thinks this painting is not very valuable/important.

French School (16th century) Portrait of a man in profile, possibly Henry II of France Oil on panel, 29 x 22 cm Est. £1,500-2,000 Hp £7,500 Earliest felling date: 1546, of Southern French origins, with a likely creation date of c. 1558. A little naive, but a nice old painting?

1945: Folke Bernadotte, grandson of the king of Sweden, negotiates the release of 31,000 prisoners from a Nazi concentration camp. 1948: as UN peace mediator, he's killed with approval of Yitzhak Shamir, later prime minister of Israel (right with Netanyahu). Remember his name.

This book by Piranesi got sold for €24,700, exceeding expectations. It was given in 1783 to King Gustav III of Sweden (see bookplate!) It has 28 etchings of the Colosseo, Foro di Nerva etc. They're valued for highlighting both the engineering & poetic aspect of the ruins.

Activists have slashed a painting of Lord Balfour at Trinity College, Cambridge. It was painted by Philip de László (1869-1937), one of the great portraitists of his time, in 1914. Though few will openly admit it, I suspect many of the staff secretly agree with the sentiment.

The governor of Georgia, @GovKemp , has approved the demolition of the historically important Jones Building. It was part of the largest mental hospital in the world and contained an operating room, lab, X-Ray and morgue. It's beautiful. Why not turn it into offices/apartments?

On Monday evening the Notre-Dame of Bringolo (northwest France) went up in flames. The church dated to the 16th century & the bell tower is listed as a monument of national importance. What caused the fire? According to the media, a short-circuit is the "favoured" explanation.

Attended a superb lecture on the history of picture frames at @catharijne , given by @Maarten_vtK ! I was fascinated to learn about one of the oldest known frames in existence, dating back almost 2000 years (c. 50–70 AD). It encloses a Fayum portrait held at the British Museum.

People who make a point of reading a lot are genuinely annoying. They feel so superior but often many of the books they read are trash. I'd rather read a quality book every so often, really get to grips with its substance, and then ponder on it for many weeks.

Walking down Oxford Street I had a vision of the future. Fluorescent facades returned to Victorian splendour. Philandering pickup artists liquidated. Vegetation where now squalor reigns. We will revolutionise London with beauty. We can do it, and it will happen.
