It’s all in the hips.

To create power through the ball, our hips have to swivel up and through.

Coaches who want faster get-off times:
First…
DON’T: Yell at your punter to “go faster.”
DO: Coach your punter to take shorter strides.
You’ll be amazed at the difference in get-off and the improvement in hang/distance.

Punters 🤝 strength coaches:
Hang clean hips
If it looks like you’re NOT getting your hips up and through like AJ in the vid above, start with the setup.
We never want to be completely vertical; shoulders slightly forward puts our hips slightly backwards and encourages that

TIP: Tension within a punting motion reduces power.
We want to have a specific “mold” position, but for most guys, feeling loose with their upper body helps move their drop naturally down the field.
If you’re having an issue with nose-up drops, try
What’s one of the easiest parts of punting to work on?
Fixing your drop by having it slide across the drop “table.”
Essential for consistency.
@OneOnOneKicking
What should you work on in the off-season?
Your leg needs a break. Rest it.
But when you come back, start with line-drives.
You’ll gain more consistency and reinforce proper drop muscle memory hitting these at 60% than if you’re swinging for the fences.
@OneOnOneKicking
Do drops on a track or hard surface to get instant feedback.
If you can’t have a consistent drop while doing a drop drill, how can you expect to perform consistently when it matters?

Friday Fix:
“Everybody’s hang time is worse in games...” -
@AJCole90
,
@Raiders
Guys often get too far forward (bc of added adrenaline, trying to go faster, etc).
Try receiving the ball more upright to get to a better position.
@OneOnOneKicking
Want better height, distance, and accuracy?
Make sure you’re creating space.
Here’s some instruction regarding the no-step drill, trying to provide space for the toe to be pointed through contact.
@OneOnOneKicking
A good setup makes or breaks a punt, so let’s keep this super simple:
Hang the ball down at 11 o clock over the knee (1 for lefties).
Fold your arm upwards so it’s slightly bent.
Let the left arm make up the difference.
@OneOnOneKicking
PSA: if you hold the ball like this, you’re putting a ceiling on your hang and distance.
We call this holding it “outside the pocket.”
If you’re new to punting and want to see a spiral (somewhat), then cool.
But don’t do this if you want get better. I will die on this hill.
Alignment tweaks help punting consistency.
Punters coming from soccer have the tendency to align their chest to the right, which leads them to a big, slicing, leg swing.
Better set up. Better punt.
@OneOnOneKicking
🎥new analysis coming soon. In the meantime…
TIP:
Punting is a pull motion, not a push motion.
Start thinking about your power coming from the ground up.
@OneOnOneKicking
A better setup that keeps your approach consistent will help your power and accuracy.
Keeping the hips to the plant spot on the approach is an easy cue.

Working on your drop?
First, check your setup.
Use a mirror, phone, etc to make sure shoulder—>elbow—>ball is over the outside of the right kneecap.
Slide it across the drop table, maintain the ball angle at 11 o clock, and start getting better 🚀🚀🚀
Going to start a series analyzing NFL punters and breaking down how their technique works.

Friday Fix: The Drop (Thread)
99% of young punters aren’t thinking about the drop the right way.
Instead, of thinking about the ball 𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔, think about the ball 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔.
And the way you do that is by using your momentum.
@OneOnOneKicking
Here’s what it looks like for Justin Tucker at contact. This drill is all about getting the quad firing and creating good ball contact.
But it doesn’t happen without space.

Easy tip for young kickers:
Keep your body and hips moving towards the plant spot and NOT the ball.
Moving too far inside as you approach just leads to the feeling of being jammed.
Maintain width and power by keeping your hips on a line towards the plant!

on the importance of understanding kicking:

Back at it for 2024 w/ the Atlanta boys.
One of the things we worked on was focusing on a quick first step.
The drop is important… but too many guys get consumed with the drop and forget to pay attention to how their weight is moving downfield when receiving a snap.
I would like to thank Penn State and the entire staff for the past 2 years. I’m incredibly thankful for all the memories and experiences with my teammates over these two seasons. I wish Penn State the absolute best. I have entered the transfer portal with 3 years remaining.

@OneOnOneKicking
Let’s start with a bad punt.
Here, AJ’s arm is slightly upward.
The result is that the ball accelerates DOWN upon release, forcing him to “sit in a chair.”
His hips are more stuck. It’s all leg, and the result is… not good.
PGA Tour Player advice applies to K/P as well.
Everyone’s swing has different tendencies in games.
Take a look at your film, figure out your tendencies, and start to make adjustments.
Everyone’s swing changes during competition. I started improving a ton when I figured out exactly what my tendencies were in my swing when I have nerves and the correct adjustments for them. For ex. In nervous situations, my initial takeaway in my backswing gets quicker, and I
A great way to work on this is a one step liner with an emphasis on a short stride and a high finish.
Also, don’t hate on my flexibility.
