It is with absolute sheer vulnerability and ALL praise and thanks to Allah that I can finally announce I have spent the past 18 months writing a book! 😭
Tangled in Terror: Uprooting Islamophobia, out with
@PlutoPress
March 2022 iA 😬🥳
Preorder:
to jump on milkshake boy for a sec, just wanna say pakistani boys in the uk have always resisted the far right from 60s thru to now in cities like bradford & birmingham & they've faced the brunt of that violence, yet anti-racist movements have always overlooked & patronised them
Eid Mubarak! Praying for all those celebrating under occupation, in refugee camps, in detention centres, incarceration, those who are homeless, stateless, community and family-less, those in hospital, unable to receive medical aid, undocumented, or persecuted anywhere today!
I am SO proud of my mum for sending this! Shes been persistently taking on the local mosque in the most disheartening battle! May Allah grant us victory against the arrogance of the tiny tyrants in our mosques! Pls make dua for this legend 💗😭👏🏽 May I be like her when I grow up!
Whilst we all feel heartbroken let’s recognise that if we’re not black it’s our duty to implement real material changes to change the anti black status quo. In the UK anti blackness is upheld by non black people of colour - south Asians and Arabs especially - in so many ways
Staff & students at
@UniversityLeeds
have shared shocking photos/videos sent to them by their chaplain who has travelled to join Israel’s reserve army-he says Israel is doing the “most moral” thing rn! Will he return to a pastoral role!? I won’t draw the comparison but… imagine!
Just had a talk on Islamophobia be cancelled due to the org’s EDI team wanting to be “inclusive” & have “balance”… very jarring framing as it suggests islamophobia is “against” antisemitism which is both a deeply flawed understanding of racism as well as kinda islamophobic lmao
U know what’s insane is how the western public consciousness would mobilise if this was 2.2 million golden retrievers being bombed to extinction in an inescapable cage…
people on their high horses like "i expected it".
none of us "didn't expect it", we're just devastated. i dont think there's anything remotely worth deriding about people wanting to have hoped that our families & friends could have been a little safer. we're not naive/ignorant,
Listen to Black ppl & Black Muslims & activists>>> but iv compiled a resource ill keep updating esp for south asians (but other non-black POC) to help with unlearning white supremacy & with also therefore disinvest from anti-blackness! hope its helpful:
Very frustrated. I knew this would happen..of ALL the constant things I post about racism & islamophobia... the post about my mum’s email got BBC interest..here is my reply: I refuse to participate in my own dehumanisation, I refuse to have our stories narrated by othering eyes
Thomas Macaulay, 1835: "We must... do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us & the millions we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood & colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, & in intellect" (in order to uphold colonial racist hegemony)...
from now on calling urself an ally is not enough, i want active divesting. disobeying. boycotting. refusing to follow the norms and policies and laws of this state. im not here for fascism, if we r planning to die in this colonial metropole then let's do it resisting consistently
This is really important, if we want to think about race & Britain; Shamima Begum's citizenship was never about "law and order" but about race masquerading as that. The notion that "Britishness" is some concrete entity she cannot fit into is eventually a logic of extermination
I am absolutely fuming.
Just watched
@BBCTwo
's "Lost Boys? What's Going Wrong For Asian Men" presented by Mehreen Baig and I am in shock about how disgracefully she happily used her "insider" status to reproduce racist, culturally essentialising tropes & ignore racism.
A thread:
P-P-P-Prevent, a new alliterative poem I performed at Lowkey's gig on Friday! Shout-out to all the scholars, educators and practitioners whose work fed into this one.
This week I’ve been in an employment tribunal where a Muslim academic at
@UniversityLeeds
is bringing multiple claims of race and religious discrimination against the University. It has been astounding so far hearing the processes of exclusion, racial governance & undermining 🧵
also i saw some liberal tweet about "physical confrontation is not necessary we should fight the far-right at the ballot box", sorry b but if ur happy to wait til the far-right are a systemic option at parliamentary level ur not really about fighting the far-right at all, &
channel 4 live is THROWING me... how did amber rudd just reply to nish kumar saying "don't deport me" with... "what's ur name again"...... WOW.... u actually PERSONALLY oversaw the entire windrush scandal/... and ur here trying to make a joke..... u lot are actually violent
DID YOU KNOW being visibly Muslim isn't always bad/hard/scary?
today @ kings cross an old arab man came over in the crowd, nervous & said "asalaamualaykum". i replied & he started speaking arabic to me to which i had to just say "laa" and point uselessly at myself (classic). 1/5
In July The Jewish Chronicle wrote a story with my photo as a headline image stating I’d performed somewhere I’d never attended nor heard of. The entire system of newspaper apologies is a paltry excuse for justice, but hey they had to print this embarrassing sentence at last! 🤲🏽
to say physical confrontation is "not necessary" is to have no idea how embodied racism is, what it feels like to feel constantly physically unsafe, racially profiled, at threat because of the body you are in... we've been fighting the far-right without u for years tho so dw smh
the point is - clearly my visibility as a Muslim today was a blessing for us both; & how magnificent that in a busy, hustly world my visibility spoke to him that I would see, listen & help him even if he wasn't sure i could. we both parted on "alhamdulilah". alhamdulilah. 5/5
The west is literally one of the most violent concepts of the last 500 years and if resisting the colonial capitalist world of demonic violence cultivated in its name leaves us labelled with names bearing heavy consequences then so be it, at least we tried to evade complicity
What’s something that ISNT anti-racism but is framed like it IS?
I’ll start: “diversity”, “representation”, “inclusion”, brands, designating and legislating “hate crimes”, caring about poc when they’re dead, decrying deaths by border violence as “tragic”,
ur turn
Thinking a lot about how prayer rooms should be discussed as part of accessibility convos. If ur org/space has a prayer room I am x10000 more likely to feel I able to spend time there & if it’s openly signposted, not just need-to-know, I am gonna feel actively welcomed.
and just to add its not like egg boy at all cos of the racial dynamic and the history of far-right facism & paki-bashing, and the ramifications for milkshake boy were potentially much bigger and violent
Im not even gonna retweet that Apple TV trailer! Reminds me of these tweets tho lmao !
Someone give me and my friends money and we will serve ourselves the screenplays we deserve!!!
From Gaza now: Mosques are the only means of communication through speakers. 'We have no communication with the outside world. They are using their military might to harm us. We have no power but the power of God, no one but God. Please, pray for us.'
🥳🥳🥳 tomorrow on
@BBCRadio4
my 1st radio doc will be out! It covers Islam’s tradition of poetry from Hassan ibn Thabit RA & praise poets’ love for the Prophet SAW, and the limits on Muslim poets to speak freely due to Islamophobia/racism.
🤲🏽That’s what you call Allah’s timing.
How I sleep knowing that Islamophobia and it’s accompanying world system *can* be uprooted x
(finally got my own copies of my book alhamdulilah, all praise is for Allah and any good in the book is from God)
Ok, here it is:
Postcolonial Banter - a poetry collection... by... me! 🤷🏽♀️
Almost exactly 2 yrs ago I performed a poem that went viral.. never would have anticipated this 2 yrs later.. terrified, excited, amused & in awe of Allah. 🙏🏽 UNreal.
Preorder:
Today I got asked what it means to “be a Muslim woman” - I got bored, I got sad, I got angry, and as ever, I got writing.
“To be a Muslim woman is to be always fought over, but never fought for.”
Been trying to find the words to tweet what I want to say about today’s verdict on Shamima, but I can’t so let me share this poem I wrote two years ago instead. 😔HasbanaAllah.
Alhamdulilah! im SO excited to share this video filmed & directed by
@ZeinKhalifaa
to mark 50 days since my debut poetry collection, Postcolonial Banter, was published by
@VervePoetryPres
! This is me, postcolonially 'bantering' myself with different poems from the collection! 🥳
Today I randomly recalled that "This is Woke" - the outlet that we learnt last year was a government Counter Terrorism outfit pretending to be "grassroots" - contacted me after my poem went viral in 2017- i found the email which is dated just 2 weeks after my poem went online -
Amazing! SubhanAllah! Imagine being so attached to a the concept of a nation built on slavery, colonial violence, exploitation and genocide? Imagine not seeing the irony of this tweet!!! Rap battle me if you have an issue bro 🙄 and Allah is the best of judges.
so my grandparents live in bradford and me in leeds and I just want to give you an insight into the terrorisation that the Punish A Muslim Day letter is. Regardless of whether anyone acts on it, the damage is done (thread)
One of the most subtle of these is the internalised desire to be closer to whiteness. If we look at the likes of Patel & Javed we see how Asians are able to access power through performing proximity to whiteness THROUGH their internalised racism
Eid Mubarak! May everybody’s Ramadan efforts be rewarded! May the world be eradicated of this virus & may all oppressors/oppressive structures be overthrown & all the persecuted & oppressed peoples granted the unity & power to change this world in order to attain the next! 🤲🏽
guys... the issue isn't that XR are ON the "extremist ideologies" list... the issue is that there IS an "extremist ideologies" list... who defines that? its DELIBERATELY ambiguous & expansive so as to legitimise regulating & quelling political expression... oppose it in ENTIRETY
there's gonna be a v classist analysis of today from middle-class white pundits, but remember that it is THEIR racism at policy, legislature, media, management and institutional level that really structures this country and keeps them invested in racism. dont let them deflect...
this is epic, and so poetic. if a statue is a symbol of what histories we are invested in in the present, tearing it down is a symbol of our refusal to let that continue. tearing these statues down is the opposite of erasing history, it is REVEALING the past of THIS present
I keep trying a pithy/useful tweet about it but in honesty, as a state school kid, I am just heartbroken & angry for all the young ppl who this govt has reminded that the school system is, at core, a system to reproduce class & wealth disparities. All my solidarity & rage ❤️
.
@UniversityLeeds
chaplaincy services are meant to be for all students wellbeing… would ANY student feel safe that someone in the reserve army of a state blatantly violating international human rights law and enjoying it, be their go-to for help when struggling? Astonishing!!
Staff & students at
@UniversityLeeds
have shared shocking photos/videos sent to them by their chaplain who has travelled to join Israel’s reserve army-he says Israel is doing the “most moral” thing rn! Will he return to a pastoral role!? I won’t draw the comparison but… imagine!
Eid Mubarak all 🤲🏽 May Allah grant us sincerity; rid us of hypocrisy and arrogance; aid us in toppling every system of injustice and oppression; & grant us imaginations and hearts expansive enough to build another version of our world - & May the akhirah be better for us, Ameen x
Eid Mubarak! May Allah make us vessels for justice in this life and never make us of those who oppress ourselves or anybody else. Enjoy this timelapse I took at Jummah in the Blue Mosque in Istanbul yesterday!
today i got invited to speak in dubai... at a festival run by the UAE government... i was like... 🧐??no??🧐 but they saved me writing an "i refuse to condone" email by 33 mins later sending another email saying "we would like to recall the Invitation to Speak"🤪😂🤪
#blessed
🤲🏽
legit convo today I asked my Uber driver if he’d had a good day in the sun, he said yeah, I said did you get some ice cream? he said, ice cream is for ladies
🧐🧐🧐 that is the hottest gendering take iv heard so far this year
unsurprising but the past few mornings hearing
@BBCBreakfast
describe ppl seeking refuge in Britain as “migrant boats” “needing capturing” makes me feel sick. U know what would stop “unsafe illegal crossings”? MAKING SAFE CROSSINGS LEGAL + NOT CRIMINALISING ASYLUM SEEKING HUMANS
Last night I was fuming so had to write this long piece about being on a panel with four hijabi Muslim women of colour & the attempts made to derail our conversation— which when called out, questioned or refuted, met with aggressive white fragility
sidenote, if ur safe & inside with loved elders (& keeping them protected) now is the perfect time to record that oral history you’ve always been meaning to do - listen to them, cherish them, draw the family tree, scribe out those generational stories, their “classic sayings” etc
Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem, all the praise is for Allah, I am utterly terrified to have brought this new writing into the world and absolutely honoured
@hajarpress
have trusted me to do so. I pray this book allows us to move, and to seek, in other directions ♥️🥳🤲🏽
SEEING FOR OURSELVES: AND EVEN STRANGER POSSIBILITIES
Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan
@thebrownhijabi
This September, reflections on seeing and being seen—in public life, intimate relationships and solitude, and finally in surrender to a different kind of gaze.
The hatred and loathing of dark skin in south Asian cultures predates colonialism and is linked to class and caste. It’s echoes last in the skin bleaching we all know about and the ways dark skin south Asians are denigrated ridiculed and dehumanised even within their own families
a few weeks ago i saw a tweet that said "having time is not the same as having capacity" and subhanAllah it's really changed what I take on and how I organise my days even!
Also today, Bradford really said who needs to visit each others houses when we can visit each other’s HORSES!?!?!?
(this brought me such joy to see fr)
if yesterday was the first time you realised our democracy is a veneer pls recognise that's YOUR privilege; lots of us who face the brunt of state violence have long known this govt is not run in the interest of the people but corporate power, opaque industries & security elites
Went to the Tate with my friend who in the most outrageous Auntie manoeuvre told the gift shop staff that I had written this book and should sign their available copies… mortifying moment but delighted to sit amongst Fanon and Lorde 😩🤣🤲🏽
nah, i mean i know we already had a fascist authoritarian state but when u deep the fact people when given the option would actually say "yes make it worse" i dont know... this honestly means death for so many. im not exaggerating. actual death, social death, this is beyond scary
Eid Mubarak!🤲🏽May Allah destroy the Fir'auns of our times & liberate those spending Eid under tyranny of occupation, displaced by profit-making & war, persecuted, trafficked & incarcerated! Allah free our siblings from Gaza to Eritrea, Kashmir to Sudan, Cox Bazaar to HMP! AMEEN!
Always good to know where you are in the pecking order 🙃🙃🙃
dogs & cats can be brought home safely with specialist care but British people of colour? 🤔🤔🤔
I think one of the most underrated acts of courage is to stand by yourself with full uncertainty of what next & tawakkul even when it means knowingly putting urself through pain/loss. That’s a faith we rarely speak about imo, shoutout all of u who’ve been there 🤲🏽
A dress so popular it's got its own Instagram page - but why are so many women going crazy for this £40 Zara frock?
We spent the day with some of its loyal followers to find out why...
#Hot4TheSpot
The wording of this new lockdown measure in the north the night before Eid is very racially coded -.- I’m all for protecting poc from getting covid but the way to do that is surely a more consistent approach? I’m not surprised but it’s disingenuous
Wrote about racism, yorkshire, empire & constant coercive assimilation for
@guardian
“Taken as part of the wider historical context, Yorkshire County Cricket Club has done nothing but hold the fort. But that is a fort of white supremacy and empire.”
Disrupt anti blackness wherever you find it. Stop lightening skins. Stop preferring light skin people. Learn the history of casteism/ colourism intersecting with colonialism. Stop using the N word & KNOW WHY. Stop trying to outmanoeuvre black people. Reflect. We have to do better
Watching these white Australians climb uluru cos it’s the “last chance” before indigenous people’s long campaign to protect it comes into play tomorrow is just such an iconic reflection of colonial entitlement... one woman goes “it DID feel disrespectful but it was our dream!” 🤢
Been hard to word the hypervisible feeling of being a hijabi the last few weeks esp when it feels entirely insignificant in the face of genocide but its undeniable the two are linked - genocide of Palestinians depends on dehumanisation of Muslims - our freedom is inseparable
This is absolutely horrific - a hijab wearing Muslim woman has had a paving slab thrown at her head by a white man in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
Violent Islamophobia is on the increase.
Sorry to share from my own book but it’s self evident that Islamophobia is the method through which consent to this genocide of Palestinians is being manufactured. And when I say Islamophobia I am never talking about “ignorant prejudice” I am ALWAYS talking about colonialism.
performed this poem about Prevent and the violence of the entire Counter Terror apparatus as part of the launch of the
@TNInstitutereport
on 'the alternative' to the War on Terror on Weds at Westminster... it's called P-P-P-Prevent🎤, yes to using art to disrupt spaces 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
You don’t have to be sitting on a black person’s neck to be part of a system that makes black life unliveable. You may be unlearning things yourself but you’re also responsible for your family, your cousins, your youth and your elders. In the same way we need to disrupt generally
I got the job!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 alhamdulilah all praise to my creator who has consistently guided me to opportunities that otherwise make no sense in their fortuitousness and how perfectly matched we are 💕💕
today i realised that the ayah that comes just BEFORE the ayah some ppl mobilise to silence survivors -suggesting they must "conceal deeds" of abusers- is often conveniently overlooked; it EXPLICITLY states that a person wronged IS NOT held by this -injustice must NOT be silenced
Blessed to have received my copy of, I Refuse To Condemn, today! an honour to be part of this revolutionary project which refuses to bend to performances that distract us from the work of interrogating, holding to account & dismantling the violent systems that structure our world
Just watched
@rizwanahmed
film 🤯 it so obviously speaks to ALL of us who are in awe of it/sharing which thus leaves me with the Q from my bro:
"do you think our white friends watch & see that as an exaggeration? do you think they realise we think about it all the time?" 1/4
Please be wary every time the news media tell us the UK BLM protests are about “what happened to George Floyd”, yes & no... that disingenuously deflects that this is about systemic racism that is the foundational principle of Britain & that the USA is simply a colonial outpost of
lol went on BBC radio 5 Live about our book and got asked about Liam Neeson’s comments 😑😑😑 and then also “so 3 Black women and a Muslim wrote this? Sounds like the start of a joke doesn’t it?”
...
...
never mind the false distinction what a WILD revealing thing to say (!)
Toni Morrison once said, “if there’s a book you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it”.
in 2016 me & 3 friends wrote the book we wish we’d had as 18 year old women of colour going to study in elite academic institutions
3yrs later we have our book
Alhamdulilah I am unspeakably grateful to announce that
@VervePoetryPres
are publishing myself & 3 of the most 🔥 women I know. Weve been sittin on this manuscript for 3 years but are finally going to have our truth out in the world (in Jan, but preorder: )
Hey
@Nike
, thanks but no thanks for your nike hijab, how about you actually turn up for and show some accountability towards the Muslim women whose labour your profit off and exploit????
It’s easy to feel paralysed when black people are murdered every single day but if we are not black we have work to do. How are we contributing to those deaths? How are we complicit in black peoples dehumanisation? How are we upholding white supremacy and complicit in it?
Alhamdulilah blessed and excited to begin this new chapter at
@LeedsPlayhouse
as Writer in Residence yesterday! I have so many mixed feelings about theatre and hope to untangle and explore some of that in the coming year iA 🤲🏽💜
Meet our new Writer in Residence Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan!👋
She’s an incredible artist, writer, poet and educator from
#Leeds
who has joined us for a year-long residency to develop her craft and knowledge as a playwright.
We’re thrilled to welcome her to the team.🧡
Whiteness is constructed through anti blackness, non-black poc subconsciously know this and know that it is much more difficult for black people to access whiteness in the same way so by throwing them under the bus, can benefit. E.G think how “BAME” representation rarely = black
My latest for
@guardian
“Mainstream conversations about Islamophobia reflect a racist disregard for life. This is upheld in basic understandings about when violence is justified and when it is not, who can cross borders, whose deaths deserve inquiry…”
in 1966 Phil Ochs' released "Love me, I'm a Liberal" in the USA.
here's my spoken rendition for June 2020, UK
"Love me, I'm not racist" 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️

Very sorry to announce I will be withdrawing from participating in
@BradfordLitFest
this year. I have come to the decision after discovering BLF were recipients of a fund from the Counter Extremism programme this year. Very sad and sorry - full statement for my withdrawal below:
Actually one of the things that shook me most when I reread his biog recently in the context of
#metoo
etc... Malcolm fully changed his life cos he believed women... find me a man who would do this today? ESP if it would cost him his status? May Allah pour mercy upon Malcolm 🤲🏽
Always remember: Malcolm X BELIEVED women. It cost him everything to do so--his position in the NOI; his relationship with Elijah Muhammad, a man he saw as a father figure; and in some ways, his entire life, a whole life spent with Betty and his 6 daughters.
#MalcolmX
idk how ur ramadan is going lads but a girl at the mosque found me a second night in a row to be my row-neighbour then afterwards put her phone in my hand on “enter new contact number” 👌🏽🤲🏽
just my 1 cent, copied from my IG because its that type of day, thought worth it for some of my twitter friends too though. Who can access the system is not the problem. The system is the problem. Who is the face of the system is not the problem. The very basis of its working is.
