Journal clubs at your institutions rarely include vector biology papers? And you're looking for an opportunity to connect with entomologists/VBD scientists while discussing recent literature?
Join us for this online & international journal club focused on medical entomology.
Also guys, I just had a look at his CV just to check if he listed being an
@LSTMnews
student or else. No mention of it. So I'm not sure what his past supervisor is referring to but let's not start mentioning LSTM for something that is not even confirmed, thank youuuu 🤍
As an introvert, I found the whole thing excruciating but I had to get professional pictures taken yesterday... Because you can't be faculty and use your living room selfies as professional pictures apparently 🥺
But our UTMB photographer was so nice and did a good job I think
For those who insisted that I was unkind, that we can't progress as a society if these poor men aren't given an opportunity to get better...
I'm not his mama, I'm not his therapist. I want a colleague who will respect and value my colleagues and students, including the women.
And also, just so the new followers know what to expect, I post a lot of pictures of my dogs 😅 and then I mostly talk about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion in Academia, Global Health, and bugs!
I will never understand the people who go out of their way to find out some information that was redacted and then publish it in the thread. I've redacted it for a reason, don't be a jerk.
But welp, some others! You had a blatant example of misogyny right before your eyes and you tried to justify it using everything under the sun: autism, ADHD, potential previous assault by a woman, cultural background etc.
Do better.
@DaniRabaiotti
@SebBoucher
Sebastien, you're joking, right? This guy despise us so much, he had the audacity to put it in an email. Somehow he navigated academia doing so and I should put more energy into supporting him? His personal development? Instead of supporting someone who deserve it? I'm confused
Anyway guys, I'll wrap this up with a few tweets and then I won't be interacting much with this thread anymore. It has taken a life of its own and I'm too busy 😅
Guys I don't want to be trending here again and be accused of bullying fragile men but I wish I could show you what someone had the gall to put in his CV 🫠
I don't even want to talk about the candidate and his supervisor. What I think is pretty clear.
I just want to say that men really have a long way to go. Some of you were amazing today and I really appreciated seeing you go all out.
- always attach your CV
- explain why you'd like to join their lab, what you like about it
- say why you think you'd be a good fit
- say what you would like to learn
- mention if you already have funding to support yourself or what your plan/expectation is
Pas un subtweet. Ou peut-être que si 🤭
I find it so interesting how people have no issue mentioning African leaders' controversial issues as soon as they die but it's now seen as completely inappropriate to mention the Queen's ties to colonialism. "Too early" 🙃
Finally, a bunch of you reached out asking for advice on how to spontaneously apply for a research job. I'm no expert but there are a few basic things:
- research the person you're going to reach out to. See what they work on so you can tailor your application
@DanielGrubbs9
Of course it does, Mr. White Man. Oddly enough, thousands of women have liked/shared/commented on this tweet. Didn't seem fake to them.
Maybe it's time for you to sit down with a cup of tea and ask yourself why you came to that conclusion. Happy self reflecting!
I'm probably forgetting things so I'll add them later :) But that would be a pretty good one already.
And of course, basic politeness. I'm not saying you have to lick our boots, but don't send us this 👇🏽
Peak academia experience is having a random person reaching out your chair looking for a specific type of collaborator, your chair letting them know about you, and them reaching out to a bunch of male PIs with 0 expertise in that field using papers YOU wrote 🤍
I'm glad some men are challenging these comments. Because, if you do it yourself as a woman, most times you're being accused of being too sensitive and/or not being able to take a joke 🫠
Just overheard ..at the table next to me "the science was bad, I complained and I was accused of being misogynistic – but she was barely a female”...laughter from his two male colleagues. I got up and challenged the comment. He apologised but said it was ‘only a joke’.
I'm just putting this out there because Twitter is magical sometimes. If you come across a Rickettsia rickettsii positive sample (tick, dog, human) that you do not really care about because you're not a rickettsiologist, please hold on to it (at -80°C 🙏🏽) and let me know ASAP 🤍
@kishoreragi
Oh so I should waste my time on an interview instead? My dude, how am I, in that scenario, the one spoiling his life when HE is the one who sent me an inappropriate email and the one who probably interacts with women inappropriately on a daily basis. Go take a nap, you're tired
@Le___Doc

Going to the car dealership as a woman must be wayyyy up there on the list of most enraging experiences out there. Is it in the job description for these guys to be complete idiots with women? Ugh
Irish Twitter is really the place to be right now 😭 well, unless you're a royalist/colonialism lover etc., then of course you wouldn't be having a good time
@SebBoucher
@DaniRabaiotti
A better way to do what? To not wear your million of red flags on the top of your head like he did? Because I'm pretty sure there are no magic programs that can "fix" this type of guys.
@Omar_MalinGenie
@MikeParsons1974
We don't owe you comfort and discretion when you disrespect us. No one is being plastered here.
I saw further down that you seem to think that it's easy to figure out the identity of the Deans, you got that wrong as well.
Sorry I will not share this one, but I find it so interesting how ppl will write these completely inappropriate things w/o even realizing. I almost choked on my biscuit reading this but I'm sure our friend Brett* thought it was a great addition to his CV.
*not his real name lol

Some guy who wanted to give me his number just told me "Wait! Are you one of those who use pronouns? Because I'm out of here if you are..." 🫤🫤
So, I guess 1. He doesn't use pronouns, 2. He thought I wanted his number in the first place and still wanted it after this question
(Can't wait for men to come here again to tell me: "you left a trail of breadcrumbs and we found Brett. You wanted the Internet to bully him you evil witch!"
Please people, don't go harass your neighbour if he happens to be called Brett LOL)
This is way too entertaining not to make it a real thread and a learning opportunity: what is the silliest thing you've seen during a job search?
Listing their mother as a reference and blog posts as publications has already been mentioned lol.
One of my biggest icks about academia is how they pressure us so much to bring in money but then the Finance peeps find all kinds of ways to block us from spending it.
"Oh you ate chicken and not beef on that flight? Sorry can't refund you, we have a no chicken policy"
I applied for an assistant prof position and the lab tried to convince me to accept an offer letter as a technician. They said I'd have all the freedom to work as a PI but that I shouldn't be upset about the salary, that it was enough to eat and pay bills 🤡
"SEVERE convulsions and seizures"? As someone with epilepsy, I find it so disturbing that a nurse wouldn't know what a real severe clonic seizure looks like and would use this to spread misinformation about vaccines...
We’re not self-absorbed and obsessed with titles – I really don’t care much – but this here happens often and is just rude. Often, only our male colleagues are addressed using their titles in the same email, or when introducing people.
This is the 1st time this person emails me.
From being abandoned outside in the cold to getting a fat belly and and dog siblings to boss around.
Yes, my 120lbs dog is quite scared of the guinea pig. Especially when he's running at full speed and making GP noises. Very scary stuff.
More than a year ago, I was talking about something crazy someone put in their application. I was quite surprised Rebecca guessed it was about his wife. Now fast forward to today, I've read dozens of cover letters and you guys need to stop telling us about your servant wife.

No it wasn't you lol. I'm French myself, I've mentored hundreds of international students. It's just an insensitive assumption to read this email I've shared and say "this must be a foreigner" when we have the same type of dudes here.
🧵I'm working with a female scientist all my male colleagues warned me about. "Oh she's a destroyer of careers/she's rude and entitled/she creates a mess wherever she goes/we call her Tornado"
When I tell you my experience with her has been the most amazing thing...
@tattooed_bug
Quel ennui.
See people? It's really not that difficult... And if you don't have anybody around who can help, people are usually very happy to tell you how to pronounce their own name.
I'm looking for a microbiologist with ALL the skills below, if you think that's you, send me an email (maularoc

- standard bacteriology techniques incl. cell culture of intracellular bacteria
- "basic" molecular biology techniques (PCR, seq)
- animal research
Do you want to know one of the nicest things a friend has done for me lately?
My last grant proposal submission was extremely chaotic and she brought me home cooked meals closer to the due date to make sure I’d be able to focus on writing 🥺
We’re all on a first-name basis here and I have absolutely no issue receiving an email that starts with “Hi Maureen”, even from someone I do not know.
But please don’t send us email like “Hi Drs xxx, xxx, xxx and Maureen”. Bro what? Just no.
It's finally here 🥺
He chose to focus on intracellular bacteria, which are a huge part of my research. And I told him that I wanted something very clean and ""simple"". Here's the result. Very happy with it.
You know those Facebook reminders you get of stuff you posted on the same date a few years ago? On January 8th a few years ago, I was almost kicked out of my MSc of Infectious Diseases 😅

Today, after more than a year without my ADD medication, I was finally able to get my Ritalin.
For months now, doctors in Texas have been telling me that ADD doesn't persist in adulthood and implied or literally told me that I wanted to get high on Adderall.
