I just want to stand at the bar of a wet-led pub drinking a pint of decent cask beer and listening to the crack and feeling the buzz of a proper pub. 😣
My first Scotch pies cooling. If they taste as good as they look, I'm happy. Bit bigger than normal but I couldn't find a springform tin under 4 inches.
Even though I was expecting us to remain in Tier 3 despite tumbling rates, I feel very depressed by its fact and sorry not only for us beer drinkers, but extremely so for my many friends in the trade whose backs are against the wall.
Today we say goodbye to my friend Paul. He achieved 50 years brewing with
@JWLeesBrewery
, but sadly he passed away shortly after. Today is his funeral. A very sad day.
@MrYesWeCan
@Lifelandlady
Quite right. I was the Y2K Project Manager for the then Benefits Agency. (Now DWP). We spent many millions and huge efforts making all UK Social Security computer systems compliant in such a way that nobody outside noticed.Millions got their benefits as usual. That's success.
Today's breweriana comes under the heading "Things I didn't know I had". A spirited defence of hazy beer by
@marblebrewers
Not dated, but I'm guessing around Year 2000. Happy to be corrected.
An hour out with
@totalcurtis
Followed by several more hours out with us drinking cask beer of the utmost quality. Cask in trouble? Nope, I am because of aforementioned.
Today's breweriana are real classics. First the old Boddingtons Brewery pub sign which adorned all their pubs when independent. It sits on a shelf in my kitchen. Second from my office wall, the newer and better known one. Two beauties though eh?
@IndyVoices
@JaneFae
I hope that the Indie didn't pay you for that claptrap. What about the jobs, the people, the suppliers? This is a huge industry and you just flippantly write it off with throwaway clichés. Dear me.
Reading all last night's exotic brews that folks were drinking, while just little old me was quaffing perfect pints of bitter. Where did it all go so wrong?
Just a little note to the anonymous git who accused me of writing good things about
@totalcurtis
book to get a free copy. The time I spent on that piece of work - and effort spent - was worth a hell of a lot more than the cover price. Free?Hardly. 😡
Today's breweriana is a working Guinness clock. Sitting at the top of our stairs where there is a window and shelf, it has blown off a few times! It eats batteries and tells whatever time it likes, but at the moment isn't bad at all. That won't last. Age? 40 years +
It has been a fab few days since getting married. Lots of beer and good company. As my old mother would say "Tomorrow it's back to old clothes and porridge'.
My case of beer from Germany has just arrived. Ordered Tuesday. Company warns. "No UK orders after 23/12 until we know what's going on." Thanks leavers.
Day 6 post knee replacement. (5 in some ways as the op finished early evening). Pain more or less under control. Walking with crutches fairly well. Plenty of exercises to do. Stretches now possible as the leaking from my staples has stopped. I think I'm making progress.
Well. Pubs to shut from midnight. I'm probably wrongly in the Ship. I'm going to get completely pissed on my last cask for some time. Stay safe out there.
Todays little bit if history will bring back memories to some. Now I don't know if this was an early one or just a London only version. I suspect the latter.
Watching RealAleCraft Beer on YouTube. Even he, repeat even he, has finally spotted that all NEIPA basically tastes the same. The craft version of boring brown bitter.
Cask conditioned stout. And it is just the angle that makes the head look too big. Especially with winter approaching more
@JWLeesBrewery
houses should ask for it. It is very good.
I've just asked my MP to back
@CAMRA_Official
's campaign to treat pubs fairly and let them sell beer to take-away & drink at home during lockdown - just like supermarkets and off-licences can. You can too by following this link:
Ever wondered exactly when bottle conditioned Guinness ceased in England? April 1993. Seems it went earlier in N.Ireland and Scotland. Who knew that? Today's breweriana reveals almost all.
Another couple of milestones passed. Sat outside in a chair in the garden for half an hour - my first time outside since op on 4th August. Then walked up and down the close we live in two or three times with shoes on. A few clicks from my knee, but fine, though overall.
Today's breweriana will be the last in this lockdown series, as the pubs opening again tomorrow signals the beginning of the end. So let's finish with a cracker from my beloved Higsons. Early 60s metallised showcard. A favourite of mine. Obvs.
Sorry to say our trip to Buxton, in my opinion, has not turfed up one decent pint of cask ale. The exception, not in Buxton, was
@thornbridge
which was exemplary. Pretty pissed off. Biggest issue is too warm and poor condition. How to ruin cask ale. 🙁
Very sad to learn of the death yesterday of Tony Allen of Phoenix Brewery Heywood. Blonde beer pioneer, a great brewer and a very independent person. We will remember him fondly at our
@CAMRA_ROB
meeting on Tuesday. Cheers Tony 🍻
Bit of a warning from the Isle of Man as Covid flares to a new high. Only a couple if weeks ago it was all systems go. Don't be too complacent people. Nothing is certain without extreme care.🇮🇲
