Input to Output+Feedback Coach, Spontaneous Speech Day 1, Interactive Input, TPR, Running Word Walls, Turn it Into a Chant/Rap, SATs (Students as Teachers)
Happy Birthday to my 1st Spanish teacher, my beautiful Ecuadorian wife Maria. We met at 20 yrs old in Guayaquil. I didn’t speak Spanish, she didn’t speak English and now we both work in schools using those languages! I love our story+this chica for eternity.
#THANKYOUECUADOR
I use TPR because it is instant CONTEXT, makes students move, 110% boosts proficiency+students LOVE it. When new verbs start adding up, I make chants/raps with the TPR because “Movement turns the brain on to pay attention.” Angela Hanscom

Take Away/“Quitar” Game.Swipe+take board only if what I say is true. You can only swipe when I say “vamos” so watch out for me tricking you! Touch board+statement is false, lose a point, touch board before I say “vamos”, lose a point. Game to 5. This game brings the energy!
When your Spanish 1 student gets asked “What do you do after school?” and goes off for 1 minute and 45 seconds. My shoulder hurt from holding up the camera! Bravo to Evan Su for being such a huge risk taker! The sky is the limit for you amigo!
#learningbyrisking
“Guessing Game”-Students guess how many errors are in sentences. “Over guess” and you lose that number you guessed, “under guess” receive the number you guessed, guess exact number of errors, get double. Some Hip hop music in background and ready to go.

This class REALLY enjoys this part of our TPR-S “The Ricardo Story”- a hit for 9 years! TPR is fun, fast context, helps develop lang system in brain+brings classes together so they take the language as far as they can go. On assessment, ss compose own version w/original details.
Check out our 1st TPR Rap of the year, fourth class of year! Raps/Chants bring energy to the input of new words and TPR allows students to show how they’re processing the input.
“Escribir Escuchar Leer Hablar Ver Mirar”
Pep talk in Spanish class to reinforce the growth mindset. This is the beginning of coaching students to monitor their own learning so they feel like they have skills in their hands when they walk out the door.
I love “grading” bc my assessments are performance based. When I see or hear amazing production/improvement by a student, I copy it down and show the entire class next time. We applaud their success because success in the language is the motivation.
#spreadslikewildfire
That moment when your least motivated class walks out of your room smiling and high fiving you like crazy because their world was rocked in a Spanish game…..and you know right then…..that there’s a good chance…….they’ll be with you for the rest of the year. What a feeling.
In 2004 I began as a “Communicative”
teacher. Now Year 20! Thanks Greg Duncan+
@elle1955
for introducing Proficiency before I entered a classroom+Dr Joe Goebel of TCNJ who taught me how to input/scaffold so words become a part of students. All I’ve ever known+allowed me to be me!
“Typical Error” number 6. With students throwing around so much language, we need to fine-tune some common mistakes. This awareness empowers students because they begin to self-correct themselves. Of course I turn it into a chant! “Two verbs back to back, second verb ends in r”.
Twinning with
@CatalanoBrendan
a leader in our classroom and on the field, to get ready for Battle of the Classes 2023! This is a must see event. We are psyched for this amazing night!
Evelyn (Brazil), Maria (Colombia), and Oceane (France) visited our Spanish 3 class today. Thanks for your insight into your beautiful cultures and chatting with our students. This was a special day!
Our verbs acquired in Span 1 so far. Why “acquire”? Bc every one has a TPR, is inputted as much as possible +students use in meaningful games/tasks over and over. Thank you Dr. James Asher for developing TPR, the technique that makes languages come alive.
#thankfulFriday
I guess when you teach the months by telling the students your bday, then telling students they can only go to el baño if they know your bday (along with other jokes), you get these over the summer. Students ROCK!

I must give this junior her props. Sophia has been eating+sleeping Spanish since her 1st day freshman year, always sharing w everyone how much she loves languages. Now Prez of Spanish Club, she rocked a sombrero the entire Back to School Night+wants to be a Spanish tutor!
#letsgo
Greeting and saying “great class” to every student, making an effort to get to know them as much as possible, and “catching them doing something good” is also a big part of my mission.
#theirfeelingsmatter
As a teacher of 17 years who has seen his students at their happiest + proudest speaking all class long, it doesn’t feel great knowing they are speaking less in Spanish. However, with reflection and student feedback, we can create a place where students are proud to have a voice.
Every single verb I input and students are expected to own gets posted on wall. Each has it's own TPR. It boosts student output because we have a constant support system. I say, "I didn't translate them, you've earned them, they stay up."
#HowWeDo
So proud of my Span 1 classes! Different levels of proficiency with 1 goal in mind…getting better! Before assessments I give a pep talk + say “Let’s really see what u can do,show off as much as u can.” Results=happy students willing to communicate MORE!!!
#pathtoproficiency
After students throw around tons of lang, a quick self evaluation lets them honestly assess their effort+reinforces growth mindset. I like to ask them to write something they feel I should know at bottom of paper. As Forrest Gump said, “you never know what you’re gonna get.”
A few tears of joy shed at graduation at RAISE Academy. What an amazing group of students and teachers coming together to promote a sense of belonging and community. So proud of everyone!
#raisetogether
A student asked me to write down the advice I gave her freshman year, and got it tatooed! “Don’t let anyone treat you like you’re their option 2.” Meaning=Don’t lower your standards for anyone or anything because self respect is everything.
#tatooteaching
For teacher appreciation week, I’d like to shout out the students. They bring a special energy, commitment, goofiness and everything that makes them who they are into class. They make the lessons come alive. They make teaching awesome. They make me happy.
#ThankYOUStudents
At pizzeria who do I run into? Ex student Jordan who speaks Spanish at his job and now his own company! Started working and spoke Spanish 24/7. “I practiced like in class!” He saved money, learned more trades+created his company. He will spread love of languages+community
#PROUD
So special when students leave that personal adios at end of year. In email or on our board, I’m always left staring at this last time they get to express themselves, be present and thankful. I’m definitely thankful for all of them. Teaching…what a fulfilling job.
#alwaysreflect
I got inspired by the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico at the beach today in Sandy Hook, NJ. And two little girls from Quebec insisting “Make a big house.”
What a rush looking at our 1st assessments! The spontaneous use of language, all the risks+all the mistakes reveal so many great language moments await us! Just can’t wait to let them know how proud I am. It’s all about the evidence we collect+the convos after.

Am I taking a food order? Nope. Writing down the amazing sentences I just heard John say. Stopping class to share with everyone these “orders” celebrates skills, reminds studs of lang targets, and encourages RISKS.

I love watching the looks on faces when I say I was born to be a teacher. When the comment sinks in they look in my eyes for an extra second like I said I can change the world. I’m so honored that my job creates opportunities for a bigger and brighter day for others.

TPR (using body actions to teach words-NO translations) is the perfect tool to boost production and make class FUN. These are the winners from our Wild West TPR game today. These boys went all out!
We practice staying “in” the language as much as possible, practicing how to have side convos in Spanish so the words become a part of us. It takes a lot of risk taking but after first assessment of year, I think this student definitely gets it!
#risktakers
#stayinthelanguage
Every year I go for it+it’s not easy. Students are expected to enter+immediately jumpstart dialogue in Spanish.Takes a ton of modeling, patience+reinforcing but SO worth it. Immersive environment from the beginning naturally bridges into lessons. These are guides+getting longer!
My student is going to USC in Cali! Still call her mine even though I haven’t had her since freshman year. Lucky to be a part of her college app process, biliterate certif+watch her grow into the amazing lady she is today. USC is getting a brilliant and kind soul in Jordyn!
Nothing makes my day like giving handwritten feedback to my students. This personal touch can be so powerful these days. Last day of school is around the corner but they need to hear how proud we are of them until the final bell.
#positivityforthewin
@skrashen
Yes. We want our language learners to be risk-takers with the goal of communication to get people to 1st understand us so we can make coNNections, not judge us 1st so we can grammar coRRections. Now, let’s plan meaningful lessons that reflect that.
So proud of this group-Spanish Club. 48 degrees but these boys+girls laughed, danced+washed their hearts out. Special shout out to the sign crew for trying to persuade every car. 600 dollars made in 2.5 hours for

Doctors Without Borders whose mission is to save lives.
Former students now in college always ask me… “Still doing TPR?” Means they found purpose w/ the strategy used the most to create context. Reminds me that we must inquire about+validate our students experiences to know how they’re absorbing all the language we input.
Another Amazing International Day at Manalapan High School! Today we celebrated the many things that bring the cultures of our school and the world together-music, dance, art, food, and positive vibes. Students need to see how our diversity only unites us.

I’m loving how all of the water bottle brands at Staples are Spanish words or pretty much Spanish words! These things immediately jump out in my brain. Don’t even get me started with car names…Buick Cascada, Porsche Carrera, Nissan Armada, GMC Sierra
Wife+I bumped into someone who’s retiring. He said he’s happy bc he can volunteer more+help others. Inspired,my wife later repeated the same advice her mother used to tell us all the time back in Ecuador… “Life is about our experiences, not our things”

@guarino_FLC
I find myself more+more every year sharing with current students how former students contact me with stories of how they’re using Spanish as adults. These are the latest messages+they will be used to inspire. Makes my heart melt and makes me want to teach Spanish forever.
Whenever I get these it makes me want to take my students across Latin America now! I really hope 1 day my students get to travel abroad +experience another culture. If they don’t, I am confident our Spanish class now will still make a big impact in their lives.

The best is during a test, when a student calls you over for help and says, “I forgot how to say “because”, you do the TPR and .2 seconds later they say “porque”. TPR is instant confirmation.

#TPRismagic
Reflection from parent conferences-BIG reason my students are confident+enjoy acquiring Spanish is bc they can spontaneously speak. “My son doesn’t stop speaking to me in Spanish!” We empower students and make them so happy by simply letting them talk…spontaneously+unscripted.
So lucky to work with the Extended School Year staff-patient, intuitive, energetic with so many strategies to engage different learners. I’ve learned a ton with the team this summer and these pros made me feel at home immediately
#Learningneverstops
I believe a big reason my students are risk-takers +can communicate sophisticated ideas is bc of “extension words”. They know it’s possible to add more details + say MORE. I post the entire list on the 1st day of school + take it from there. Yes, they all have a TPR!
#raisethebar
A great way to practice expanding on ideas to produce paragraphs of thought in Span 1 are “37’s”.Respond to a quest. in 3 Verb Forms (Present, Future,“Have to”)+ 7 total sents. Constant input,TPR,+speaking from bell to bell remind us we can become bilingual!

Teaching has nothing to do with grades but everything to do with promoting an attitude and skill set that will encourage a better tomorrow. Without students personalities and abilities coming first, we are just talking not teaching.

Never thought I’d write this. My beloved Ecuador is facing disgusting acts of violence due to organized crime. Vowing to put an end to greed+violence, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated. Prayers for Fernando Villavicencio, his family+all Ecuadorians.
Movie Projects-Viewing Day. Create a 3 minute skit with a logical beginning middle + end that demos you can truly USE the language. (Not memorize/look up words). I LOVE the errors because that’s how we grow! Spontaneous speaking + writing always pays off.

Getting my students to love lang
1. Share asap we aim to speak, write, read+und more
2. No translation before or during input-lang system develops in brain+words stick
3.Spont speech is backbone+prompted to spont speak everyday
4.Celebrate risks,errors ok!
5. Feedback bw ss+tchr
Low-prep FUN writing game “Continuar”
-Prompts spontaneous creating with the language, “recycling” as much vocab as possible, and expanding on ideas.
-Students in groups of 2.
-1 piece of paper+writing utensils
Collect to analyze what vocabulary students are retaining.
Kneeling next to an overwhelmed student, doing 1st part together of task w them+celebrating their effort does wonders. Increased confidence 100% of student today+that’s all it took.
They yelled for joy 4 times after in games. Something about that on 1on1 personal chance to shine.

My mentor told me 18 yrs ago that by putting acquisition/communication first, my students would have better grammar control than classes that put grammar first. He was right.

Sometimes the best language from students in a language class is...“Can I try in front of the class?” “Can you show my writing now?” “I am gonna rock at this!” “You gotta hear what Nick just said”.
#studentsincontrol
#hungryforlanguage
The best part about midway point in year is asking your studs if they’ve ever dreamed in Spanish, speaking/listening to someone speak. When a hand goes up+they detail dream in amazement, I say “Your brain is telling you it wants more.” Everyone else in room…”WHOA”
#sweetdreams
I ask myself, Why would we not use TPR? What would class be without it? Its the quickest, most effective +fun way to input verbs, ext. words, and adjs.Throw in it can be used with narration, music, and gets studs up and moving makes it more than powerful.

Greg Duncan 2004… “If I said I know French, what would I need to do right now to prove it to you”?
Me “Speak,have a conversation.”
Greg “So how often should our ss speak in a language class?”
Since then, spont speaking is a natural, everyday part of class+confidence explodes!
“Take Control of Your Learning”. Students enter room with balls, cards, pictures, or boxes on desks. They jumpstart the class by themselves, reinventing class activities or performing the same ones. This frees me up to walk around,“spotlight” strengths, and workshop with studs.
Time to watch movie projects+celebrate proficiency in Spanish! Create 3 min skits w/ a logical beg, mid+end that demos you truly USE the language (not look up words+memorize). These are movie winners! “Art Film” by Ava is 1st of its kind for our Span 1!
#SpeakingIsTheCornerstone
Starting to feel “the rush” this week, that feeling when pace is just right, students are smiling as they keep up w/ you. After class you’re on cloud 9 because u realize your students are only going to get better. I will now reflect how to recreate this in hybrid.
#reflectionrush
"Interactive input". We really get into it bc we're allowing words to stick. I use TPR, 0 translations, comprehension checks+prompt students to use the lang immediately. Students will use the words they hear us say so we must pass the baton+let them speak!

I started using Google Sites last year for speaking files. Students create their own site and upload different samples/personal records from fun tasks. Can add so many things to create a digital portfolio. Was very powerful for self assessment and celebrate/demo/growth.
