I'm gonna be fr I like discussing different viewpoints and will fairly engage with pretty much anyone but if you're gonna be annoying or snarky about shit (especially when you're genuinely wrong or spreading misinfo) I just mute and move on.
I'd rather have actual discussions.
I've seen some people taking issue with him being named "Trip", because the joke is too on the nose and corny or something. And I just have to ask.
Have we been playing the same series? Lol
Trip: that's the name of the new character expected to appear alongside Doctor Eggman and Fang the Sniper in
#SonicSuperstars
, creative officer Takashi Iizuka confirmed in a new interview with
@IGN
.

"How ironic fate can be...To think that we would once again cross paths in this void of time...Shadow the Hedgehog."
"...Wait who the fuck are you."
"...Are you fucking serious right now?"
"Yeah no he does this shit a lot."
>Jun Senoue doing music for new Sonic game
>Oh wow that's so cool, can't wait to see how tha-
>Jun Senoue being "focused on making it sound like a classic Sonic game"
And now we finally know who's doing the music!
Jun Senoue is the music director, though it isn't only him. Iizuka confirms internal and external people are involved.
And yes, Tee Lopes is one of them!
"Sonic the Hedgehog was a hit in the 90s, but started going downhill with his rough transition to 3D. Getting rid of the Freedom Fighters, changing Dr. Robotnik to the much more childish "Eggman", and retconning humans onto Mobius. Throwing out simplicity for new, edgy stories."
I'm not understanding how this doesn't count as a "real Super form" to people but Super Tails and Knuckles do when they're also just effectively glowing palletteswaps with no physical design changes.
-The fast guy is named "Sonic"
-The guy who looks like an egg is "Eggman"
-The mechanic who likes vehicles (particularly cars and planes) is named "Miles Prower"
-the guy with big punchy fists is named "Knuckles"
-the guy with a big fucking singular tooth is "Fang"
I think the concept of media "aging badly" is inherently stupid and kind of a non-criticism imo.
I think things should be judged and criticized based on the standards of when they were made. It's only fair.
Jokes about this vs the JP one aside, I find it odd that they chose this type of ad for Shadow and not Sonic.
Idk I feel like "Rebellious cool guy punk who shows up and motivates others to live fearlessly and true to themselves" is more Sonic's thing than Shadow's.
This is one of my favorite subtle traits about him ngl.
People tend to misinterpret Sonic as arrogant or egotistical because of his confidence, but he's actually pretty humble.
Y'know, this is probably the best opportunity I'll have to talk about this.
It's one of those minor things that isn't so horrible in isolation but just connects to a bigger issue imo.
@BasedPota18
In general this is a big issue with Toriyama's work tbh, and people tend to ignore it smh.
Like, later on he'll introduce this Super Saiyan vigilante character called "The Golden Warrior", and craft a big mystery as to who his identity is
This character never shows up again
Which just makes it all the more cooler that he pulls through regardless.
Sometimes having the resolve to push through a situation where victory seems unlikely is even more impressive than overcoming odds you're certain are already stacked in your favor.
Stuff like ring energy for Super forms is left ambiguous, it seems to be more of a game mechanic than an actual lore thing. It never really comes up outside of gameplay.
Instead the emeralds seem to just run off the thoughts and will of their users.
@twitch_kiddo
Tbf it's not her fault that people run the jokes into the ground or get annoying about it.
Funny or not the stuff she and her friends do is harmless.
See this is why Mario vs Sonic is stupid because it's not about stats or feats or how many planets a character can shart or whatever.
It's just a war of attrition between whether Mario fucks up a dodge first or if Sonic fucks up spamming parry first.
Super Sonic is effectively just Sonic's good will given form. Be it his desire to protect others, or his friends' desire for him to win. You get the idea.
Under that reasoning, I always kinda figured that whenever Super Sonic isn't enough or can be damaged, it indicates moreso that Sonic either isn't taking things seriously, or is perhaps allowing doubt to cloud his thoughts.
Naoto Ohshima has also kinda backed this up, suggesting that Sonic would be very accepting of the LGBTQ community and even himself would be open to being in an LGBTQ relationship.
A W for Ian Flynn.
I can't really agree with this line of thinking. Sonic is not supposed to be a relatable character.
You aren't supposed to look at him and see yourself, you're supposed to look at him and see what you want to become.
But in the case of something like Advance 2 and how desperate and dire the situation is, it gives off more the impression of "Oh shit this isn't looking good", and that moment of doubt being the cause of why his Super form becomes vulnerable enough to get knocked out of.
@JustARa96671111
@VioletMadness7
even then in all fairness he was pretty hesitant to actually fight.
in 3&k he spends most the time just pulling traps on sonic and only fights when literally backed in a corner.
in SA2 he doesn't even consider physically attacking rouge until he's been dragged into space over it
Stuff like 3&K or Unleashed definitely lean more towards the former. In one Sonic isn't facing a threat at all so much as he is just playing around, and in the other Sonic is thinks he's already won. Neither are desperate scenarios where his will is pushed to it's peak.
@GALAXY__COWBOY
soft serve ice cream, but on the topic of sonic characters and their favorite foods, there's another one i find interesting with shadow. realistically he likely doesn't require food, but a 2005 promotional "interview" tells us he does have favorites, and it's uh. it's something.
I see a disturbing amount of people trying to rehabilitate Doug Walker because he recently said some things they agree with, to which I say not so fast.
I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again:
Ppl who dislike these version of Sonic can’t handle a different interpretation of the character. Maybe he acts differently but is still Sonic
"MJ was vain and selfish, unlike the more sober and supportive Gwen"
I feel like Gwen Stacy is like, one of the biggest examples of historical revisionism in terms of characterization.
@gayoticisms
I can't really agree there either. They seem pretty intentionally comedic and possibly not even evil.
Fang is being marketed as a villain too, and he's almost exclusively portrayed as silly and bordering on incompetent in nearly every game appearance.
Op is completely valid in being uncomfortable ngl and people should stop getting on their ass about it.
Someone shouldn't be shamed for removing themselves from a situation they felt was uncomfortable.
I think his moveset is kinda lame but ngl what presses me more is everything else about him.
I could tolerate a boring moveset if he didn't look so god damn ugly, lifeless, and sauceless in these games post-Brawl.
Like I don't wanna play with this mfer he ain't Sonic.
I love how amazing the 06 model looks when animated well and given a wider range of expressions.
Fr feels like watching these Ohshima sketches come to life.
Tan eyelids all the way but not when they look like that.
I fucking hate the blue eyelid fur but I can see why tan ones are off-putting to people since every game to have them for the past 10 years makes it look like Sonic has 5 pounds of play dough smacked onto his eyes.
You guys are gonna make up a bunch of imaginary scenarios for this show and then when it drops it's gonna be a sitcom styled show of Shadow enrolling in Tom's police academy and failing his cop training but somehow getting the job done.
A huge part of why I strongly prefer JP Sonic is because I feel like he was always designed to be more of a timeless character there. He takes inspiration from both Japanese and American pop culture across past and present, but isn't defined solely by any one era or culture.
Even setting aside the nonsensical implications of "Guys a Sonic who is supposed to be post SA2 at the earliest is slowly growing into the Sonic from the first game", I'd argue having to go on a journey to become the real Sonic in itself is straying inherently far from Sonic.
Everyone who's complaining about Sonic's characterization in Prime might want to see this.
Seems like he's starting to grow into that more mature Sonic we know... slowly.
#SonicPrime
#Sonic
Meanwhile Western Sonic is always chasing current fads/trends since the beginning and I think that's why he's rarely had any consistent identity over here because from conception he was more about just being whatever is currently seen as cool than he was about being a character.
Specifically game Sonic because 9/10 times when I see someone shitting on him it's because they genuinely either do not understand the character or have some kind of weirdly petty bias against him.
@thatEggfan
"Hey did you know he kissed a princess and Shadow used guns I bet you didn't know that I bet you've never heard this before I bet this is the first you've ever even considered such ludicrous concepts"
You guys are laughing now but with how much misinfo and misconceptions there are in this community this is just how 90% of Sonic lore discussions I see end up sounding normally.
Genuinely there is so much potential for sincerely unnerving and kinda horror based concepts without even really having to veer from established canon.
There's so much potential
alright listen to me very carefully
you want analog/surreal/liminal/whatever horror in sonic? you have the space colony ark. like it's right there. that is all I'll say I'm leaving everyone to their own devices
This is the kind of stuff I'd like to see more in IDW's version of the character.
Less page long speeches of him just telling us how cool and heroic he is, and more of us seeing him actually show us that cool heroism.
Just a slightly more subtle approach can go a long ways.
@MoiraAunty
guys, don't get this, it's a scam. they didn't even include mega collection plus, sonic & knuckles collection, sonic action 4 pack, or sonic PC collection. don't bother, just mod your switch to run all these collections.
People who treat Gerald like the main villain of SA2 when it's so painfully obvious that the real "villain" is just mankind's arrogance, ambition, and greed (which is represented through GUN) is just astounding to me.
I noticed some people tend to villanize Gerald Robotnik when that shouldn’t be the case at all. He literally broke down and tried to destroy the world because his granddaughter was murdered. It’s not an excuse, but I sympathize with him
I'll criticize those Batman and Spider-Man adaptations too if they completely overhaul the core characteristics of the main character.
Being an adaptation isn't an excuse to completely shit on the character and disregard everything about them lmao. Can't agree with this take.
#Sonic
is Sonic. There. It’s that simple.
"But he acts differently between the-"
YEAH. Just like how Batman or spidey acts differently between different products. That’s what happens with fictional characters in general. It’s still variations of the same character.
1/2
"Saving the world is old news to him"
Man, I really like how that's phrased. It's probably just a more literal meta joke about his past adventures, but I think it suits his actual perspective on it really well.
Went on and did translations for the character bios myself. Please keep in mind that these are *mostly* directly translated so some expressions might sound off, also that I’m no professional translator and I did this mostly for fun
have a fun read, these are really good! (1 / 3)
Part of why nothing is ever going to improve regarding this community is because despite everyone here getting in constant arguments that should make the vast amount differing opinions clear, people still treat it like a hivemind.
“I hope the next Sonic game has actual art direction, no one wanted these realistic environments” y’all were BEGGING for an open world Sonic game that looked like these be so fucking fr
@CraftyAD360
Bro's seething over it meanwhile like, child was smart enough to go "Oh, I can't go forward and there's a thing next to me going up, maybe I should look at that".
@BasedPota18
Idk, I just think Vegito has a cooler vibe to him.
Admittedly Gogeta has cooler fights but I think that's also just movie budget. I'm sure if Vegito's fights were running with that kind of money it'd be the same deal.
@BasedPota18
I always thought the Golden Fighter was just an older version of the mysterious boy who defeated King Piccolo.
The King confuses SSJ Goku for that character but notes the hair is different, and the Gold Fighter bears a striking resemblance to him. Only with a different haircut.
Ngl a Sonic game could come out with the best gameplay known to man but if the story and characterization is dogshit it's easily going to be my new least favorite game in the franchise.
I do in fact care more about the characters and writing than I do the gameplay.
@BattleObsessed
From my understanding it's just an animation error.
From a lore standpoint I suppose you could rationalize it as an extension of him and Gohan's training in the Android Saga, the whole "let's work to make Super Saiyan our default state" stuff.
"Erm why do you guys care so much about Sonic's characterization? Sonic can be anything and never had a definitive character. The JP staff doesn't care about 30 year old manuals."
The JP staff:
Like idk it's hard for me to get invested in a character who's liable to have his entire attitude and personality shift into whatever the person currently writing him thinks is cool in the modern day.
@SoftieInDenial
100%
As someone else already went into, Shadow in SA2 is already very self loathing. Even setting aside his almost comforting acceptance of death at the end, Gerald's plan doesn't leave him any escape, and he never shows any concern about this.
@AdriWindGB
This is unironically what I believe lmao.
The actual "lore team" is just Sonic Team.
The English Lore Team is just something to appease a lot of us English speaking fans who keep asking Iizuka hyper specific details of things he probably hasn't thought about in 20 years lmao
@CyanHyprPsychic
Unironically I kinda love this idea tbh. Makes Silver feel more connected to Sonic and Shadow and kinda explains his natural talent for Chaos abilities and kinda ties into the theming of 06.
Ultimate Lifeforms of the present, past and future.
"Archie Sonic is everything game Sonic should be"
Then God am I glad they fucked it up and made Game Sonic as he is because that is a peak character right there.
If game Sonic was just Archie Sonic he would deadass go from being my favorite character to my least favorite.

Yeah I was in shambles. Got me there.
Because I was getting invested in the trailer and then I hear Sonic sounding like a 40 year old white dude and it took me out of it.
@ZTH_END
I mean, he's a guy that trips and being clumsy seems to be one of his prominent traits. I don't really think there's much better names he could've been given lol.
I would rather mix matched groups tbh.
I think limiting the characters to teams should only be for marketing.
I prefer when Sonic and Co are all off doing their own thing and run into each other during the adventure rather than every character having their own superhero team.
Should pairings be limited to teams like in Sonic Heroes, or should characters have mix-matched groups?
i.e Sonic, Rouge, Silver or Tails, Blaze, and Omega
God I miss when she was a sweet but hot-headed sassy girl with attitude and passion to spare and not the stuffy "straight man" mom of the group.
At least the JP media still got me covered.
@EARTH_96283
this looks like one of those fake crossover movie/tv show edits where they slap together a bunch of scenes to try and make it look like one interaction
I shit on Prime a lot, but I genuinely love the voice cast ngl. First castings I've really liked since the 4Kids era.
Ian Hanlin's Shadow especially because it basically feels like a perfect middle ground between David Humphrey and Jason Griffith's performances.
@adifying
I totally agree.
I get it's a DB homage visually, but I think there's so much potential for it to stand out as something more unique when the "thoughts into power" angle is played up more. It's a shame they've mostly downplayed that as time went on.
Like I agree with the idea of other character being allowed to have Super forms but even in the classic era it was only Sonic who has a massive change in physical appearance like that. I don't really see the issue here.
Weirdly enough, Ian Flynn confirms that Sonic Labyrinth is not canon
"Weird" because Labyrinth had a couple of references in the Japanese media of Sonic, as well as being tie to Tails' Skypatrol and the latter is canon
sans stores all the memories of our genocides in his body, the memories are also red. So when we kill him, all the genocides leak out and he forgets them, hence why he asks Papyrus if he wants anything at Grillby's, despite Papyrus being dead. He doesn't remember our genocides.
No, I have no desire in "accepting" shit
I do not care for Roger or 90% of the modern English casting. They're some of the most unfitting voices these characters have had (no disrespect to the VAs themselves) and I'll continue to hope they do a recast at some point
Accept that.
It's genuinely astounding to me that this line made it past the draft stage tbh. Just because of how stupid it is.
Having Sonic say this type of shit would be like having Eggman go "Hey, destroying wildlife to build theme parks and robots is kinda fun actually."
I liked SMBZ as a kid but there's a reason I grew out of it, tbh.
I feel like it's really not a surprise that the guy who made "Mario and Sonic DBZ animations where they fight Mecha Sonic from Sonic 3 who speaks in BT3 Cooler quotes and Mario turns super saiyan"-
"He was a nobody before frontiers"
Hey did you know the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure 2 in Japan outsold Frontiers on all platforms during it's first week.
Same because they didn't have a reason to change it there, because nobody cared lmfao he was a nobody before frontiers, so no one gives a fuck, so yeah your so beloved jp SEGA staff approved everything the west has done, you do know that Sonic Team has to see everything right?-
My issue with this argument is one could just as easily say "Modern Sonic has overstayed his welcome. He exists solely for the purpose of corporate marketing and trend chasing. Nothing more".
Hey guys! 😀
Classic Sonic has overstayed his welcome and has done for 12 years. He exists solely for the purpose of nostalgia and nothing more.
thanks for reading
This is why I'll keep talking about this shit because it'll never not annoy me that giant mischaracterizations like this have become the default understanding of the character to so many people.
I figured I should probably explain what's going on here, as some people seem a little confused and assume the demo video is down to intentionally bad gameplay.
