We recently found that the new 2021 M1 MacBooks cut our Android build times in half. So for a team of 9, $32k of laptops will actually save $100k in productivity over 2022. The break-even point happens at 3 months. TL;DR Engineering hours are much more expensive than laptops!

It’s hard to overstate the positive impact @Square has had on Android. OkHttp, Retrofit, LeakCanary, Picasso, Moshi, Anvil, KotlinPoet, etc. Any of these would be a monumental achievement by itself. But in aggregate, these tools provide the entire bottom 1/3 of so many apps.

There're various reasonable ways to divide the US, East & West: 1. Along its N-S population boundary, Fargo to San Antonio; 2. Where tallgrass prairie cedes to short; 3. Where the Rocky foothills first begin. The East is networked, the West has outposts. DFW exists on the line.

You can definitely design a micro service that’s “too small.” One time at Amazon I made a new service of one API & few upstream calls. Could have been done by 600 lines in an existing service. 6k “clean code” lines later, the abstraction was pure but we had many new ops duties.

Instead of re:Invent, AWS should do a thing where its employees just enjoy Thanksgiving and Hanukkah with their families. Then instead of announcing a bunch of half-baked product alphas, the individual teams just do thoughtful engineering work throughout the calendar year.

Assuming an engineer costs $150/hr, And she works 50 weeks per year, The opportunity cost of inviting her to a weekly-recurring, hour-long meeting is $7,500/year in payroll. For a line manager and her team of 7, the cost of the recurring meeting is $60k/year.

@kenstruys @itsSoftCoding Projects actually get more challenging as an org grows, isn’t it? There’s the old adage: “what one dev can do in one day, two devs can do in two days.” That certainly scales to 100+ contributor mobile teams. It can become chaos w/o proper guardrails or boundaries of ownership.

I've been developing for like 15 years, and I still do basic debugging with stupid log statements like: log.v("ASDF something I want to grep") As such, I officially grant the inalienable right to all developers to do this. You do not NEED a fancy debugging/breakpoint tool.

Mock/verify-style unit tests are not *always* useless, but usually are. Adding a bunch of such tests at organizational scale can balloon build/test cycle time— and with low ROI to quality goals. “Fuck tests?” No, def not. But prefer black-box verification of unit/system output.
