Tonight on
#HIGNFY
@Feargal_Sharkey
took less than a minute to say what millions across the world have wished for in the Middle East for decades. I hope and pray those in a position to make it happen make it happen. Thank you Feargal for sharing your dream. You are a good man.
This is my ward colleague
@paulinemarkham1
. She was assaulted yesterday by a stranger who attacked her because she is a councillor. Aged 68, 5'2" and 8 stone wet through, Pauline will recover; she's made of Barnsley. Her attacker however will always be a cowardly little shit
Just witnessed a magical act of human kindness. Whilst waiting in the queue at Goldthorpe
@AldiUK
, woman in front was causing a slight delay in paying. Looked like she was paying for what looked like basic shopping items with a load of copper coins.
No it don't. Orgreave took place on 18th June. As a proud member of Houghton Main Miners' Welfare Sports and Social Club (Member
#4
) may I politely suggest you obtain a calendar and find another bandwagon to jump on.
Today marks 35 years since striking miners were brutalised by 6,000 police officers at Orgreave.
Miners were struck by mounted officers and attacked with batons in a grotesque act of state violence.
Solidarity with the victim's families who are still campaigning for justice.
A flock of rare sheep at
@CannonHallFarm
have had an accidental makeover after rubbing their heads on red paint on their feeders - leaving them with a bright pink hair do.
If pop stars, actors and sport stars can get a gong from the Queen for just doing thier job then folk like Michelle deserve thanks and recognition for doing stuff like that.
@AldiUK
you have a diamond in Goldthorpe. Let her shine
Collected four bags of litter in and around Middlecliffe today. As we were picking a driver decided to add their own tribute. Purchased at 16:18 from
@KFC_UKI
Peel Street, Barnsley, order no 7049, served by Blade. How about it KFC, you must have video footage of this

Brassed Off was released 25 years ago this week, with Pete Postlethwaite's
speech worth the admission on its own.
"If this lot were seals or whales, you'd all be up in bloody arms..."
Dear
@McDonaldsUK
If you're prepared to use vehicle number plates to speed up your ordering system why not find a way to place number plates on your packaging to deter those who litter your packaging across our countryside? Your 'litter patrols' are simply not working.
Barnsley is buzzing. Dear Twitteratti if you've never been to my town you're missing something. Our town may be built on coal but it's also built on this.
I agree. Not enough Is being done to support those trapped between work and unemployment. Universal Credit still isn't working.
@AldiUK
this cashier is an absolute credit to your organisation. She doesn't just deserve a bouquet. She's deserving of a lot more.
24 years ago today the National Minimum Wage was introduced by Tony Blair's
@UKLabour
Government despite fierce opposition.
The next Labour Government will build on this legacy, delivering for working people; building a better Britain.
Dear Minnie,
I hope you enjoyed your birthday. You'll really enjoy playing with your new Barbie, Elsa and My Little Pony in your fantastic dolls house. Its pity that your dad decided to share your empty boxes and his insurance renewal with us here in Little Houghton.

On the eve of
#AlevelResultsDay2022
a teacher friend of mine posted this. The words came from the heart and reflects the very best of our education system. I wanted to share it with you today because I think these words matter.
Four bags of plastic debris collected from the bank of the River Dearne this morning, left by the receding swollen river. One wonders how much more is left to pollute our waterways. We really are a nation of tossers, aren't we?
The Christmas Eve queue outside Britain's best pork pie manufacturer: Percy Turner of Jump, Barnsley. Even has his own Facebook appreciation page:

When Emily was born she changed my world. 18 years later she's just achieved four A grade A levels with an A* in Politics and is going to study Politics and International Relations at Exeter University. That means she's probably going to change your world too.
GOTCHA!
This man was in a bit of a hurry to leave the scene of this flytipping incident in Barnsley. Didn't wish to chat to me about environmental crime and how dumping waste in my community won't be tolerated.
You can see KES on Talking Pictures (Sky 328, Freeview 82, Freesat 306, Virgin 445) at 9.00pm this evening.
A work of fiction that many believe is a documentary given its realism. It's a tough watch but one that will remain with you for life.
Total harmony within the Town Hall chamber today as
@BarnsleyCouncil
welcomed South African
@TuksCamerata
choir to Barnsley. Shows what can happen when one voice joins others in synchronicity. Totally spellbinding, they are a credit to their nation.
@PeoplesMomentum

To my London & the South East twitteratti followers; Here we have a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord served in Houghton Main Miners' Welfare with a side order of banter, politics and good natured humour. The beer is £3.00, everything else comes free.
On this day in 1975 two hundred men went underground to work at Houghton Main.
Five didn't come home.
They were the human price paid for our nation’s coal

May they rest in peace.
KES on telly tonight. 9.00pm on Talking Pictures, Freeview channel 82. It's a work of fiction but Barnsley folk regard it as a documentary.
Subtitles available.
What you see: McDonald's litter What I see: A company reluctant to place car registration numbers on their drive 'thru' receipts.
Just this one small action could have such a big impact on managing your customers behaviour.
Most elected councillors have received this round robin letter. My stance on this is crystal clear; I will never add my name to an initiative which is clearly designed to lead to targeted harassment of local councillors (of any political colour).
That's not how I do my politics.
2nd litter pick of the weekend, this time in my home village of Middlecliffe, picking up 8 bin bags of litter thrown into hedgerows by passing motorists. One thing I've learnt about these litterbugs; They may consume vast amounts of energy drinks but are still ignorant tossers.
There's nothing like an election to make you feel humble. I'm incredibly honoured to be chosen to represent my community and I'm determined to do things the right way. Thank you to everyone who voted and especially those who have put their trust in me. I wont let you down
You're wrong James. Your unrequested email hinted that those who refused to sign would appear on a list. I don't subscribe to that kind of politics. It's the politics of the bully, and that's not how I play the game. Enjoy the social media sunshine whilst it lasts.
⚠️Councillors for a Ceasefire Update ⚠️
The cross-party support for our statement has been overwhelming, including councillors from Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Green, SNP, SDLP and independents. Thank you. If you wish to add your name, please respond to this email…
I have to say
@BarnsleyCouncil
,
@letouryorkshire
and the people of Barnsley have done the town proud. 40 broadcasters screening to 190 countries. An estimated 200 million people now know
#barnsleyisbrill
.
Well done to all connected with this
On this day in 1886 , ten miners died at Houghton Main, when the cage was overwound into the headgear, snapping the rope (5 inch thick) and sending the cage back down the shaft, 1,600 ft to the bottom.
The price of coal.
RIP
“A genius. A saviour. But he was also autistic and gay. So we betrayed him.”
BBC Two said '
@ChrisGPackham
2019 speech about
#Icons
winner Alan Turing might just make you cry'.
I don't disagree.
#LGBTHistoryMonth
Danny's speech. Apparently Pete Postlethwaite kept what he was going to say secret so the reactions you see are real.
@GrimethorpeBand
played second fiddle (if you can have a fiddle in a brass band) to this finale.
The art of true politics.
2nd litter pick of the weekend.
Cleaned up old miner's path and Doncaster Road. My thinking is that local folk might be inspired to clean up their own patch and that by promoting this on social media some folk might realise how antisocial dropping litter is.
Joined the picket line at Barnsley Jobcentre this morning in solidarity with members of
@pcs_union
as they strike. Having previously served as a civil servant I know how hard the frontline workers toil to keep the machinery of government moving. They deserve our full support.
Arthur Scargill, Charlie Williams, Dorothy Hyman and Brian Glover walked into a bar. And it's not a joke. A 1976 view of Barnsley including
@BarnsleyFC
, Tommy Taylor and Barnsley Main.
If you're from Barnsley (or love it) you have to watch this:
I popped into another store and purchased the best bouquet I could find. I returned to the store and managed to just catch the cashier as she was leaving. I thanked her again. She said not enough was being done to help working people and she did what she thought was right.
This is John. He spent a few hours clearing up mud from the old road between Cathill and Broomhill. He says he does it for exercise but I think I does it because he's a great bloke who cares about his community. Thank you John.
This is Emily. She's my daughter. She is about to attend her school leavers 'prom' .
I know I may be a wee bit biased but in my opinion she is beautiful. So there.
It's a year since my heart attack where I experienced the best that our emergency services and
@SheffieldHosp
could offer. Since then I've have 11 follow up appointments, been through heart rehabilitation and taken over 3,000 tablets.
Thank you
@NHSuk
from the bottom of my heart.
Over 30 different staff helped me this week from paramedics, cleaners, porters, doctors, radiologists, nurses and surgeons. Proof that you can mend a broken heart. Thank you
#NHS
, I'll try not to break it again.
Proud and humbled to announce that I've been selected as the
@UKLabour
candidate for Darfield Ward for the local elections in May next year. I'm determined to continue working alongside my Labour colleagues to build a better Barnsley.
This is the daily experience of rail commuters across South Yorkshire and the North. Overcrowded aged Pacer units that
@northernassist
promised would be gone by the end of 2019. They now plan to renege on that promise. Its about time they are stripped of the franchise.
Barnsley
@UKLabour
out on the
#Labourdoorstep
this morning in Hoyland, supporting Sherry Holling, Labour's prospective candidate for Rockingham ward at the local elections on May 2nd.

Pete Postlethwaite revealed later that he hadn't told his fellow actors what what would be in his speech. Their reactions are unrehearsed. He spoke for a generation of miners and pit villages across our community. He spoke from his heart.
Brassed Off was released 25 years ago this week, with Pete Postlethwaite's
speech worth the admission on its own.
"If this lot were seals or whales, you'd all be up in bloody arms..."
Will the owner of YT67 EUB please contact Mr Deacon Barstow as it appears you drove into his car at the Cross Keys in Darfield on the 2nd August 2023. Pop in the pub and leave your details. You might also consider going to Specsavers as well.
Today I learned of the passing of a digital & analogue friend to that bastard cancer. Beautiful, sassy, clever, opinionated and caring, she was more than a collection of adjectives. She blew through a room like a hurricane, making time for everyone she met.
RIP Tracey Cheetham.
Never a dull moment in the life of a Councillor. Called in by a resident to capture a guniea pig on the loose close to Middlecliffe Mews. Currently under protective custody at Jane's shop. If its yours come and pick it up.
Standing room only on the 16:48 Leeds to Sheffield

*1980's rolling stock.

This is the reality of the Northern Powerhouse for 000's on a daily basis.
Shocking to see damage to the Barnsley Pals' Somme Centenary Artwork in Churchfields. Vandalism such as this shames our town and I urge anyone with information as to the identity of those responsible to inform
@syptweet
. Barnsley is and will be better than this
Conducted litterpick outside
@ASOS
distribution warehouse in Little Houghton this morning and then presented reception with a bag of litter for disposal.
