will not affect your FPS at all. It works 100% through "smart materials" aka shaders and morph shapes. They don't even have physical eyeballs. It's a fake effect similar to how the liquid shader works on bottles in Source 2.

A simple way to colour the penumbra - use 2 different coloured lights and then play with the shadow settings (normal bias, resolution) so that one light shows in the edges more than the other!
Developer commentary is now available to all owners of Half-Life: Alyx, and features over three hours of audio from the team covering every aspect of design. The Developer Commentary also supports subtitles in over 10 languages.
This is great, families can now share games in a common pool - accounts aren't locked when games are being shared as before so multiple family members can play games in the family pool.

I'm going to miss working with Claire - we did so much cool stuff at Campo Santo and then Valve, and trying to do her concept work justice was always a very rewarding challenge! There is nobody quite like her and the future of Myst/Riven etc at Cyan is going to be very exciting!
Friday was my last day at Valve.
Leaving a job full of people and projects you love is always hard, but I have a pretty good reason for it this time around:

liquid in a bottle VFX : here is the result. It's all self contained in a single surface shader, no compute shader, no CPU physics. Still plenty of ideas to experiment though ...later :)

Yes, that's exactly right! This shows the refraction on the basic mesh, followed by the refraction when affected by the roughness/normal maps, and then the final shader.
The index of refraction is different for the full parts of the bottle vs the empty parts.

On Battalion Wars 2 the engine had no facility for placing lights in levels, but explosions did spawn temporary lights. So every point light in the game is actually a recursively looping otherwise invisible explosion.
The situation around making this shader was very unusual but the response was amazing. It really made my year. It wouldn't've happened without the amazingly talented folk of Valve, especially

Just Googled something and found the answer in a thread that's 22 years old. That's a record for me. I didn't think they even had the internet in the 80s.

First off, concepts for young Alyx—you don’t see her in game, but we wanted to figure out how she might look: five years younger than HL2, but still maintaining some familiar elements/items of clothing.

I think I changed the shadow resolution, and had one light with very low resolution shadow to fake the shadow blur
