This is very tragic and sad. I wanted to bring up this very sensitive topic here to help prevent the next. Trigger warning - suicide, sexual assault.

A new valuable tool for finding relevant papers when getting into a new field of research.
It can help you find the needle paper in the arxiv haystack.
Secondly, if you're approaching the next stage in your academic journey (PhD/Postdoc), I strongly recommend that you assess a potential supervisor's personality, not just their research profile.

While many senior academics are exceptional mentors, there are a few whose behavior is toxic. Unfortunately, due to the inherent power imbalance, very few students report issues with their supervisors. Reporting can feel like career suicide. -->

As I conclude, I want to emphasize two crucial points. First and foremost, there is no shame in seeking help. Many universities offer dedicated counseling services to assist you with whatever challenges you're facing. -->
Occasionally, universities bury reported cases. I've personally met students who reached their breaking point. Some of you may recall the U.S. student who took their own life due to pressure from their supervisor to falsify results.

I gave my PhD seminar today. I was very excited. Not because of the talk itself, but because of what it represents... The beginning of the end of my Ph.D.
Dissertation submission, defense, and I'm done...
I recently discovered a paper that I like. It was uploaded 5 days ago to arxiv. The code was published 5 days ago on github.
It has ~1000 stars and ~50 forks. How is that even possible? What am I missing?
I am happy to share my

In this post I will share my experience on each day of the conference, including advice, insights from talks and general random shenanigans.
I will update it on a daily basis.

Depends which part of it. Toxic supervisors are common unfortunately. The system is flawed and does not set a goal to identify and remove them.
It feels surreal to use this as an example of why "git push" is important. "Don't forget to push your code, just in case a rocket hits your house or you have to evacuate". Can you imagine?
I don't know how I just found this:
It lets you create nice 3D visualizations in a Jupyter notebook.

I was diagnosed 5 years ago.
It wasn't like in the movies where they do one test, deliver the diagnosis, give you some treatment, and you're done.
It was a year and a half of multiple tests without a clear answer.
The fact that treatment didn't work didn't help either.

Thank you both for these tweets. This surely helps the mental health of many PhD students and other academics facing paper rejections. Knowing that the best of the best also get rejected sometimes.
The trend of 'X papers accepted' without the '/Y' is not a great one IMO.

Really high-quality reviews for

One (great) reviewer wrote the following: "Since [something we tried] doesn't work, why present it?" It bugs me. If we only report successes, how will anyone learn?

It is really frustrating when you email an author about their code, particularly their evaluation code, in order to reproduce their results and they don't answer. Makes you wonder... (not a single email/author).
