cognitive neuroscientist; author 'Zero Degrees of Empathy', 'The Essential Difference', 'Mindblindness' and 'The Pattern Seekers'. Tweets are my opinions
In 1923, 2 scientist at University of Toronto (U of T) got the Nobel Prize for discovering insulin. The patent was sold to U of T` for $1 so insulin would be widely available. Today, a single vial of insulin is > $250 and most patients use 2-4 vials per month and can't afford it
I confess reading this letter made me cry. Written by a wife to her husband, minutes before being taken to the gas chambers in Auschwitz, to say goodbye to him and her children. The letter reached her husband, delivered by a German guard with compassion
Last night I advised those in my lab to work from home. This blog is the best data I've seen & the argument for immediate social distancing is convincing. Please read & forward it on to your employers & networks as working from home has to happen at scale
I am disgusted by the
#EndAutismNow
campaign. This is hate speech and eugenics. How is this different to the Nazi EndJewsNow (1939-45) & the KKK white supremacist EndBlacksNow campaigns (1860-2018)? Treat symptoms in autistic people that cause suffering, but don't prevent autism
What would you do if you fell through the ice? This 2 minute movie is interesting because it's counter-intuitive (relax, stay calm, breathe, take your time, plan, & don't try to pull yourself up), & a great metaphor for how to cope when bad & unexpected things happen in your life
Myth 9: autistic people lack empathy: untrue, most struggle with 'cognitive empathy' (imagining other's state of mind) but not 'affective empathy' (feeling an appropriate emotion triggered by another's state of mind) (if they hear someone is upset, it upsets them)
Scientists and other academics should follow this excellent example & refuse to speak on all male panels in conferences/scholarly meetings. This includes as keynote speakers or in round table discussions. A change in gender diversity has to happen quickly
Why did it take 70 years, from 1943 (when autism was discovered) to 2013 (DSM-5 was published) to acknowledge that sensory hyper-sensitivity and sensory overload are so central to autistic people's experience? Autistic adults share their tips on what helps
If an autistic child can't talk but is showing high levels of self-injury, he/she may have painful gut problems. Asking a gastroenterologist (not a psychiatrist) to examine him/her might lead to a different treatment, and an end to the pain and self-injury
How is it acceptable for a child to wait for a diagnosis for up to 3 years? In any other area of medicine this would be considered unethical, yet this has become normalised in the area of autism. & it’s not just children. Adults too often wait equally long
Do you know why an algorithms called an algorithm? The word is an adaptation of the name of a cool Persian mathematician called Muhammad al-Khwarizmi, born around AD780. Check out this 3 minute video to learn more about his contributions to human knowledge
If you’re an employer you could change one autistic person’s life, by hiring them & moving them from the social exclusion of unemployment to the dignity of employment. For some, & with the right support, that act might be more effective than any treatments
Are our schools failing 'neurodiverse' children, who feel their needs are not being met, drop out of school with depression and anxiety, and become isolated at home? Neurodiversity may be 15% of kids and includes autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and dyslexia, etc
How refreshing to see these 12 positive features of autism. It's revolutionary to look at individuals in terms of what they can do (sometimes even better than most of us), rather than what they struggle with. The same person, looked at through a different lens.
An interesting discussion in our program lately where I’ve argued against lumping autistic traits into “challenges” & “benefits” as most can be both/either/neither. Rather we should support the person so traits can be felt as benefits more often. Great graphic (

Never underestimate someone who appears “non-verbal”. I like his description of having “learning differences” over the more value-laden term “learning difficulties”. Some brains process information differently - seemingly slower - but this doesn’t mean they are less intelligent
Sef Scott has autism and is usually nonverbal. But he stood before his high school classmates to deliver a powerful graduation speech in Plano, Texas. His message: Do the unexpected.
Shouldn’t this be illegal? Shouldn’t practitioners recommending parents make their autistic child drink bleach go to prison for committing a crime? Even if they believe they are doing good, if it could do harm, these vulnerable kids and their parents need protecting from them
A clinic in England advising parents to give their autistic children industrial bleach to drink or to be put into their rectums with a kitchen funnel.

The dangers of social isolation: Individuals with less social connection have disrupted sleep, altered immune systems, more inflammation and higher levels of stress hormones. Social isolation increases the risk of heart disease by 29% and stroke by 32%
Postmortem study shows autistic kids have an average of 11% more neurons (nerve cells) & more dendritic spines (connections between neurons) in the amygdala (the emotion centre of the brain, particularly involved in fear) than do typically developing kids
Take home message: if someone is diagnosed with anorexia, check if autism has gone undiagnosed. Not all those with anorexia have underlying autism but a significant minority do. Misdiagnosis or under-diagnosis can mean missing out on the right support
Autistic females are often under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed. The old sex ratio of 4:1 (male:female) is now 3:1 because we're getting better at identifying autism in females, recognise camouflaging, & dual diagnosis with anorexia, anxiety, depression, etc.
If you want to understand how autism in girls and women can easily be missed, read this excellent article. Thank you Maya for talking so openly about your experiences which will help other girls and women who are struggling, undiagnosed or misdiagnosed
People who love to find patterns in nature will love this super-brief video demonstration! Let’s not just enjoy it but invite brief commentaries on twitter to explain the effect. Could help teachers inspire school kids to study science.
More than half of autistic people have 4 or more co-occurring conditions (e.g. dyslexia, language delay, ADHD, depression, OCD, epilepsy, gastrointestinal disorder, anxiety, a genetic syndrome, etc). Each of these needs their own support and intervention
The assumption that non-autistic people know what is best for autistic people needs challenging. It is autistic people who live with the consequence of any action meant to help them. If there is going to be a policy that has impact on their lives, they deserve to have a say in it
We've known since the 1950s, from the psychologist and psychiatrist John Bowlby's research, that separating children from their parents harms children's longterm mental health. Those designing and implementing the US policy on migrant children lack empathy
This is the best & most accessible medical article I’ve read on how the new coronavirus attacks the body. 1,000 new papers are being published each week. The emerging picture is that this virus doesn’t just damage the lungs but can damage many other organs
I agree we shouldn't assume autistic talents only emerge in STEM subjects. According to the hyper-systemising theory, autistic talents can emerge in any field where patterns can be analysed (e.g. history, literature, drama, comedy, film, and arts & crafts)
Fantastic that Detective Inspector Warren Hines of the West Midlands Police attributes his talent at solving murder investigations to his autism: looking at the evidence in an unbiased way, with a remarkable attention to & memory for detail; & proud of it
If you’re a lawyer in any country who has defended an autistic person who has been arrested, please complete this survey. We want to find out if the criminal justice system is making reasonable adjustments for autistic people - do they experience justice?
This is an important preliminary study: Of 106 homeless people in the UK, 12.3% of them had autism, and another 8.5% of them had elevated autistic traits. This small scale study urgently needs large-scale replication. An indicator of autistic vulnerability
The shape of the future: An Autism Spectrum Job Fair (the first such event I've seen) where employers actively try to recruit autistic job hunters, to help them and to increase diversity at work in relation to disability. Well done Toronto for trailblazing
What makes young undiagnosed autistic girls feel they have to hide their autism to be accepted? And is such “camouflaging” more common in them than in undiagnosed autistic boys? How does camouflaging work? Is it effective and does it come at a high price?
If you need reminding that there are good people in the world, helping those who are poor, homeless, and struggling with their physical or mental health, check out Kazi Manaan. He gives out 16,000 free meals each year in his restaurant - just one block from the White House.
This immigrant-owned restaurant feeds the homeless and poor for free every single day no questions asked. He treats them as if they were full paying customers!
@ABC7News
What a great experiment: an MRI study of 25 "altruists" who had donated a kidney to a stranger vs 27 controls. The altruists' enhanced empathy was evident in brain activity in the anterior insula whilst watching a film of themselves or someone else in pain
Well done Canada for training the police on how to communicate with autistic people, who are vulnerable because of their difficulties in understanding social relationships, and may end up in the criminal justice system with no intention to commit a crime
My new book "The Pattern Seekers" comes out in November. It addresses 3 big questions: How do humans invent? Are we the only species that can invent? & what's the link between autism & the evolution of human invention? It's a call to action: to celebrate & support autistic people
Is autism the mother of invention?

Never underestimate an autistic person who is non-verbal. DJ Savarese is autistic and non-speaking, and is also a writer and graduated with a degree in Anthropology & Creative Writing. He co-produced a documentary about his journey that won a Peabody Award
How depressing that some science journalists are still using the word "prevent" in relation to autism. How would they like to be "prevented"? Whatever happened to valuing people? Here's the quote: "Blocking IL-17a ... might offer a way to prevent autism"
What does autism look like in girls? Would you be able to recognise it? Meet Saffron and her amazing parents recognising both the challenges (e.g., perfectionist thinking, and not taking turns) and the gifts (e.g., original thinking) of being autistic
How does a single cell turn into an embryo with a heart beat? If you want to excite kids to study science, show them this remarkable video, filmed over 24 hours: It shows a single cell of an egg, dividing and differentiating into 70 different types of cell
Even though you're told it's just a visual illusion, your visual system still 'concludes' that the blue or black lines are changing in length, when they're not
Early diagnosis of autism is likely to be better than late diagnosis but getting a diagnosis for the first time in adulthood can still be hugely valuable. It might help you make sense of a lifetime of feeling like you didn’t fit in and signpost you support
Women are on average 2.5 times less likely to ask a question after a seminar than are men, a study of 250 events at 35 academic institutions in 10 countries found. Recommendation: invite a woman who puts her hand up to ask a Q, even if a man’s hand is up
We need to end discrimination towards autistic people seeking jobs. Nearly 9 in 10 autistic adults are unemployed, so there must be barriers we as a society have placed in their way. It's time to identify these barriers, and remove them
If you love trees: Did you know that the oldest single living tree is 5,067 years old! (As of 2017). It is a Bristlecone Pine tree, in the White Mountains in California. While its general location is known, the precise spot is a secret, to protect the tree. Photo: Rick Goldwaser
Large Swedish study reveals the likelihood of autism among kids born to fathers over 45 is 75% higher than for kids born to fathers in their early 20s. And men over 55 are 4 times as likely to have a child with autism as men under 30
Even by 3 years old, kids with autism show superior performance on the Hidden Pictures Test (find as many Xs as you can in a picture). This talent is independent of general developmental level or vocabulary. Evidence of neurodiversity, not just disability
I'm super proud to be scientific advisor to Auticon, a company that only employs autistic consultants and gives them a job for life, and then hires them out to clients who have IT problems that need solutions, and gives them continuous mentoring and support during work. Awesome

Why are many autistic kids drawn to the New York subway and train system? Is it because it's a series of systems & they love to systemize? Train maps, train timetables, train types, and the predictability of vehicles that can only go forwards or backwards?
When your toddler starts lying, that's not a bad sign. Rather it's a predictor of better social adjustment, and of higher verbal IQ, because it reflects the toddler's ability to keep track of and juggle different perspectives
I am so pleased that Trinity College Cambridge chose Professor Dame Sally Davies, formerly the Chief Medical Officer of the UK, to become the new Master of the College. She is also the first woman to be elected to this role in its 473 year history.
Male mental health: Why we need to talk about the boys | 1 in 8 children now have a diagnosable mental health condition. Girls tend to have one best friend they can open up to, but many young boys don’t have anyone to talk to about how’re they’re feeling
Well done Brahm Wiseman, owner of Heroes Comics, a comic book store in London Ontario. 3 out of 4 of his employees are autistic. He hired them not for charity but because of their passion for comics, loyalty, love of routine, & their excellent work ethic.
Is it time to give up on a single diagnostic label for autism? Let's get the discussion going on pros and cons. This will likely continue next week, at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) in Rotterdam
Please please share this widely. It contains three simple words from our best and bravest doctors and nurses, who are asking every one of us to each play our part in the battle against the worst epidemic in our lifetimes. Find out what you can do in three simple words. Thank you

Hi Sacha. Glad you had the get-away vehicle ready. Good call. You don't want to get too close to nationalists in any country, whether in modern America or Nazi Germany. Very important how you're exposing modern fascism - it helps us understand how it happened in the 1930s. Vote!
Autistic people are more likely to have physical health conditions across all organ systems, including the brain (e.g., migraine), gastrointestinal (e.g., coeliac disease) & endocrine systems (e.g., endometriosis). Important implications for clinical care
This 94 man looks so happy to be making jazz on the piano with his one good hand after his stroke, connecting to the trumpeter. The stroke may have robbed him of some skills, but his love of music, feel for music, talent at music, and desire to communicate through music remains
How amazing that Angela Makes supported her two autistic sons to open their own comic shop in Cambridgeshire. It gives them employment, allows them and their customers to enjoy their passion, & creates a welcoming place for neurodiverse people to hang out
I'm glad the message in my new book "The Pattern Seekers" is getting across: that autistic people have minds that are different & for 70,000 to 100,000 years their genes contributed to the evolution of human invention. It's time for society to support them
To our Muslim brothers and sisters. We stand with you today and will continue to do so. This act of hate and racism is a crime against our common humanity and our common human rights and needs. We are with you as equals. We cry, mourn, suffer, sympathise and protest with you.
Terrifying and absolutely devastating 💔
To our Muslim community: we see you, we are with you, and we will not rest until you no longer have to live in fear.
Non-Muslims: check in on your Muslim friends and family. We must love and protect each other.
Fantastic that two inspiring autistic women, Georgia Harper & Sam Ahern, are presenting their own documentary on Channel 4 tonight at 10pm, called
#AreYouAutistic
? Well done
@Channel4
for giving Georgia and Sam a voice. They are role models. Great timing for Autism Awareness Week
Would you recognise autistic women? Meet these courageous women who are talking openly about their late diagnosis, after being "under the radar". They are helping to change our view of autism, challenging the stereotypes, and destigmatising it
This school for autistic kids looks so thoughtfully designed. In the old days we didn't understand their tactile, auditory, visual, olfactory, motor, social, and learning needs, so school may have been toxic for them. We need to evaluate what works best
An excellent blog on Neurodiversity. I agree that (1) one can see autism as an example of neurodiversity AND an example of disability. (2) disability can be minimised with the right societal adjustments. (3) human rights and respect apply equally to all types of neurodiversity.
Amazing piece on

In 1944, 26 year old Marcel Nadjari, a Greek Jew, risked his life to bury 13 pages of notes in a thermos near the gas chambers, describing his job as a Nazi slave (Sonderkommando) in Auschwitz. Modern digital imaging today reveals what Marcel documented
About 70% of autistic adults are unemployed. This is totally unacceptable. For most people unemployment is bad for mental health. If you’re a postdoc interested in researching this important topic, including reasonable adjustments for autistic people’s disabilities, please apply

Embodying human empathy, courage, and altruism: 22 year old Mamoudou Gassama, originally from Mali, didn’t think twice - there was no time to lose. He scaled 4 storeys in 30 seconds to save a toddler in Paris. Inspiring, & at the same time terrifying, to watch. Thank you Mamoudou
We should learn from the Dutch how to raise happy children & create good mental health. An egalitarian ethos in the country means parents don't expect obedience from their children. This is just 1 factor that contributes to the Netherlands having high levels of teenage happiness
New research using Coroners' records found 10% of those who died by suicide had evidence of elevated autistic traits, indicating likely undiagnosed autism. This is 11 times higher than the rate of autism. We urgently need better autism support services
Well done Libby for writing so honestly about the challenges of perfectionism. But there are also many upsides of perfectionism, including achieving excellence. At 10 yrs old you're already making a difference, educating others about autism. Keep writing!
Our new paper finding elevated rates of chronic physical health conditions in autistic people, across 9 organ systems in the body. GPs/family physicians need to be aware of autistic people’s vulnerability and the need for more individually tailored support
When autistic people publicly disclose their diagnosis, it helps shatter stereotypes, it helps educate the world, and it helps reveal the richness in diversity
This is heart-breaking and totally unacceptable. Every one of these deaths was preventable. It is time for a complete overhaul of the care and support for autistic people. To achieve this, new funding will be needed. We have been calling for this for years
Misdiagnosis of autism as schizophrenia may be more widespread than we realise. Cases like this young man - sectioned & locked up for 4 years, where the autism may be being masked by a cocktail of powerful anti-psychotic drugs - need to be investigated as a human rights priority
Trailer for a new film about an unethical scientific experiment in the US: separating identical triplets at birth, in 1961, who were put up for adoption and raised in 3 different families who didn't know about each other, to disentangle nature from nurture
I would replace the term “risk” with the more neutral term “likelihood”, to respect the language that many autistic people are asking us to use. But this new science shines an important light on 21 genes on chromosome 3 that are associated with social skills and autism
Autism is 59% more common in children of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS occurs in up to 10% of women & is caused by elevated maternal testosterone (T). T likely crosses the placenta, affecting a baby's brain development & gene expression
Greta, I just love your use of metaphors. They help us to leap into an unknown future: "Avoiding climate breakdown will require cathedral thinking. We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling. Sometimes we just simply have to find a way".
All the solutions needed are not known to anyone and therefore we must unite behind the science and find them together along the way. But you don’t listen to that. Because those answers are for solving a crisis that most of you don’t fully understand. Or don’t want to understand.
If you love trees you’ll love this fresh perspective on how trees are connected underground via the “Wood Wide Web”. We see what’s above the ground but the really interesting stuff lies out of sight beneath the ground. Trees turn out not to be solitary but are deeply connected.
If you have a PhD and an interest in autism and social policy, come work with us in Cambridge. Research into social policy will be translated to policy makers, including politicians nationally and internationally, to make the world a more comfortable place for autistic people

If there’s a parent in the playground waiting to pick up their autistic child, please don’t ignore them and treat them as an outcast, just because their child struggles with the hustle and bustle of a primary school. Go over and chat to them & support them
Finally the World Health Organisation releases ICD-11. Autism is divided into subgroups . The umbrella term recognises autism is a spectrum, whilst the subtypes might help scientific progress. Both levels could help clinical services
Autistic boys age 5 to 8 yrs old who are 'minimally verbal' (less than 30 words in their vocabulary) make significant gains after treatment with JASPER for 6 months, a therapy that focuses on building 'joint (or shared) attention' during play with a parent
Fantastic aerial footage of the one million people asking the government to have a people’s vote. How wonderful would it be if Theresa May had the courage to acknowledge Brexit is stuck, and to ask the people what they want? To show she can listen. She would win so much respect
Myth 10: there is adequate support for autistic people after they are diagnosed. Sadly this remains woefully untrue. Most are left isolated, unemployed, many drop out of school, feel excluded, are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and develop secondary depression and anxiety
Myth 9: autistic people lack empathy: untrue, most struggle with 'cognitive empathy' (imagining other's state of mind) but not 'affective empathy' (feeling an appropriate emotion triggered by another's state of mind) (if they hear someone is upset, it upsets them)
The probability of being killed by police use of force in the US if you’re a black male is 1 in 1,000, whilst if you’re a white male it’s 39 in 100,000. The conclusion is that racism, based on the colour of your skin, is still dangerously rampant in the US
Very helpful that autistic women are communicating their life experience. This will hopefully reduce stigma, and lead to greater awareness of how autism can look different in females than in males. In girls autism is often overlooked, so that many only seek a diagnosis as adults
